Girl reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint
Alert issued for Pennsylvania girl
Updated: 5:05 p.m. ET Nov. 13, 2005
LITITZ, Pa. - Police were searching for a 14-year-old girl who was reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint Sunday by an older boy after her parents were killed at their home.
Kara Beth Borden was last seen Sunday morning at the home in Warwick Township, about 60 miles west of Philadelphia, police said. Pennsylvania State Police issued an alert for the girl after reports that she had been abducted by an 18-year-old family acquaintance.
No further details about how or when the parents were killed or the whereabouts of two other children who lived in the home were immediately released Sunday.
The Borden family had lived in the home for several years, said neighbor Tod Sherman, 47. The father, Mike Borden, worked for a printing company, and the family’s five children were home-school, he said.
The oldest two children are in their 20s and no longer live at the home, he said. The whereabouts of Kara’s younger brother and older sister, however, were not immediately clear.
Sherman said the family knew the 18-year-old suspect, identified by police as David G. Ludwig, through a home-schooling network. He said he had occasionally seen the teen at the Bordens’ home.
It wasn’t immediately clear Sunday how authorities discovered the killings.
Neighbor John Hohman, 40, said he saw an ambulance on the street that morning and then got a phone call from Lancaster County emergency management officials warning his family to stay inside. He said he looked out a window and saw police running through the neighborhood. About an hour and half later, authorities told residents to go to their basements.
“We were really upset. We didn’t know what going on,†Hohman said.
Hohman described Kara, who occasionally baby-sat for his family, as “a very nice girl.â€
Sherman described her father as “very smart and focused, a nice guy.â€
“They were super people,†he said.

LITITZ, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A 14-year-old girl was missing after her parents were shot to death in their home Sunday morning, and authorities were searching for her 18-year-old boyfriend, who reportedly abducted her at gunpoint.
Michael and Cathryn Borden, both 50, were found shot to death shortly after 8 a.m., Lititz Police Chief William Seace said.
The couple's 9-year-old son, David, the youngest of five children, had fled to the home of neighbors, who called 911, Seace said. An older daughter still living at home and two adult sons were also safe, he said.
But Kara Beth Borden, 14, was missing. Police said she was last seen that morning at the family's home in Warwick Township, about 60 miles west of Philadelphia, and was reportedly abducted at gunpoint by David G. Ludwig.
"The young girl was out during the night, came home, and her parents confronted her. From what we understand, he came to the house," Seace said.
"We don't know whether she has been abducted or is willingly a part of this," Seace said, but he added that until they can determine otherwise, police are operating on the assumption that Kara had been kidnapped.
Stephanie Mannon, a 16-year-old friend who had worked with Ludwig, said he and Kara had been seeing each other secretly.
"Their parents didn't approve of them being together" because of the age difference, she said. "It wasn't because he was a shady character, because he wasn't."
The Borden family had lived in the home in the normally quiet community for several years, said neighbor Tod Sherman, 47. Mike Borden worked for a printing company, and the children were home-school, he said.

That's only about 15-20 miles from me. This is such a shock. I'm totally stunned! This community is a quiet rural community. This is the second shooting in about 1-2 weeks!! There are many amish/mennonite families in this area.
I have to agree with LC though. I & the girls here at work believe she was in on it. Just our opinions though.
Very sad!!!!!

I grew up not 5 minutes from there.
I'm not a cop, but my instincts are with yours on this one. Sad, regardless of who the perpetrators are.
Very peaceful, rural, backwater community. Occasionally has an event like this. About 10-15 years ago, the family on the neigboring farm from my folks had adopted a Korean boy, who, at 15, stabbed his parents and 2 sisters. They were nice neighbors, and gave the appearance of being very Norman Rockwell.
These events always give signs, bit they're not usually evident outside the home, and those inside are often in denial.
If I were the Litiz police chief, I'd be devoting my energies to uncovering the relationship the daughter had with her parents, until proven otherwise. This is a pretty girl, who is going to be popular. Teenage girls talk to each other. Get her friends together and find out what they talked about.
If I had to bet my last sawbuck, I think they know who their shooter is and the accomplice.

Article indicated he had the gun when he went there. Sounds premeditiated. He's 18.

. caril fugate claimed she was a hostage, but a jury didn't believe her. this is so similar. the boy talked with her dad 2 hours, then shot him in the back of the head as he was going to the door.

i doubt she was in on any plan to kill her parents, and i am sure she was in shock when it happened, and scared as you say...but i do think that in that 36 hours she could have escaped from him.
