No, my mother was a total hippy:D She introduced me to Janis Joplin and the doors.

And my poor kids now are being force fed it as well. ;)

I just love These Foolish Things...reminds me of my mother playing the piano and my father singing...they had a terrible relationship but this was one time they would seemingly be happy. I love all the old standards but also the contemporary stuff and so I suppose I've taken some of my musical taste from my parents and developed my own too.

I was born in the 60's and my dad loved to listen to the radio. I have a deep love of most music from the 60's. And not just the Beatles and the Doors. I love The Mama's and the Papa's, Sinatra and so many more.

I must admit though, when looking for a radio station in my van my first choice is country and my second is "oldies". Well, in 2005 - the oldies are the songs that were oh so popular when I was in high school and that is just fine with me.

Nada, we never saw eye to eye with our musical tastes

Oh completely, my mom was a sixties chick and she has about a 1,000 45s of the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Faces, Who, Beach Boys, Dylan, she was also into country a bit, so I like that stuff too. God, I would say that my parents were completely influential actually, though neither of them were musicians themselves.

When I was 5, my father used to sit in the dark and listen to Sibelius' "Swan of Tuonela." Boy, is that moody. Years later, I found the same record and took a liking to it (L.A. Phil directed by Leopold Stokowski- excellent!). I started listening to other stuff by Jean Sibelius- then I branched out into Tchaikovsky, Grieg, Rachmaninoff- even Mahler. So I got a bug for moody symphonic music from the romantic period.

My stepfather was into cowboy music. He never listened to much of it at home, but later, when I started playing guitar and banjo, I went to the Grand Ole Opry on a trip to Nashville, and heard Riders in the Sky (they did the western swing music for the Toy Story II movie). I also really liked Asleep at the Wheel (again, western swing). I was in Death Valley, and at a gift shop I felt inspired to buy Marty Robbins' "Western Ballads and Gunfighter Songs." Loved it. I got copies for my Dad because all this stuff was right up his alley.

But my taste for progressive rock, blues and R&B never intersected with my parent's tastes.
Look what the cat dragged in.

My mom has totally awesome taste in music even though she is 31 years older than me! She introduced me to QUEEN!!!!! And she has thousands of vinyls. The Beatles, Cat Stevens, Linda Rondstadt, Rolling Stones, all different kinds. She is 60 now and recently started listening to Nelly, but instead of "Must be the money", she says "Mosquito Money"!

I love me mom and she IS A HUGE FREDDIE MERCURY fan. She will tear up if you mention him and say "He was such a great entertainer," through sobs.

My dad used to turn on the record player on a Sunday afternoon , and we'd listen to some classics like Stokowskis Scherherazade (spelling?) and Victory at Sea (from which I especially liked "Beneath the Southern Cross") Still do.

My mom would turn on the radio sometimes to the rock and roll stations and we enjoyed listening to that too. We'd laugh and dance in the kitchen. This was in the late fifties, early sixties. Good memories. Still enjoy listening to music.
