I need a good mouser............
I have a mouse
or
maybe - mice............
We use to have 2 cats. In short, 2 cats = no mice, or not for long.
Recently our 18 year old Siamese. Catra, took ill and we had to put her to sleep. At that time I told my daughter, who lives in Columbus, that if she wanted to take her cat, Ruca, now was the time to make the change. I would not let her disrupt the animals we had by her taking Ruca with her at the time she left for college. Now, tho, since we now have 2 more dogs -- dogs that Ruca does not care for living with us and with Catra now in Cat Heaven -- a disruption is naturally there and relocation could be the best thing for her. I'm glad to say Ruca is thriving in Columbus and daughter is happy to have her there.
HOWEVER, I guess I didn't think this through all the way. I now have mice.......
What to do.............
I really don't want to add more animals; we currently have 3 dogs and setting traps sickens my stomach. Is there nothing else I can do?
If I got another cat, I'd want a BIG Maine Coon cat............ Oh yes, yes, yes
or
maybe - mice............

Flippin hell, I saw the name of this post "I need a good" than I saw your name Snooze, I admit, my mind did wander for a minute.
Anyway, mousers, I have a youngen coming along, she's only about 6 months old, but she is going to be something special, she already has the dog terrorised, and anything remotley fluffy has been shredded long ago. I await the first mouse with some anticipation.

You can get bait that is enclosed, only the mouse can get at it. Pop those behind appliances etc and your pets can't get at the bait.

Have you smelt a poisoned rat/mouse?? The bait takes a while to actually kill so by the time it dies it stinks, they mostly head outside to die.
Surely if you know you have a mouse in one part of the house, you would just keep your pets out of that area whilst you wait the 7 - 10 days for it to die.

Another one bite the dust. Speaking of dead animals, strangely enough a little bird flew right under my car wheel today, they usually make it don't they? Not this time. :-1

I had no idea about the cost of Coons. I was hoping the Humane Society might have one -- a gal I worked with got one from them -- maybe she was just lucky tho. I believe with so many abandoned cats, I would rather go that route than look to a place which is breeding more. I also feel the non-purebreds are of a better temperment and a sturdier lot that the show ones....... tho I have no actual facts to substantiate this.
Your idea about adopting is a very good one. I need to check that out.
Whatever I do, I need to be able to visit the potential new pet with the current group of dogs (we have 3) so that I don't create a nightmare in this home trying to rid it of the rodent(s).

I believe any mouse that survies the 'play' of the cats and lives, they should be allowed to leave in peace. We have placed their poor exhausted bodies outside and lo and behold - A MIRACLE! They live and run off. Then it is their choice to return or not.................
BAIT I'll have to look into. Aside from the 3 dogs we have a 17-month old in the house.

A 7-10 wait will not do at all! All our rooms run together and we have no way of shutting off parts of it unless it is a bedroom or bathroom and having something dead laying around is even more disgusting than having a rodent in the kitchen. I never thought about a mice problem when I allowed Ruca to leave -- I want her back!!!!!!

Glad to hear you are rid of the rodent!
With your current experience, what suggested solution do you think will work best for me?

If you can pin the little b*stards down, a staple gun to the head is both quick and merciful in my estimation. I did try and nail a black rat with a baseball bat in my old kitchen in Dublin one balmy summer night after a few drinks, it was great fun, but the rat out-foxed me, and my girlfriend was not impressed with the destruction of our fancy pants kitchen. "But he was a major player in the rat world, and I nearly got him" I protested, "ach ye gobshite" she retorted (she was a scot), "why did ye need to smash the spice rack on the wall, and the ceiling lights in the fight", "he was kind of a tricky customer" I added weakly, "what, did he have a jet pack, ye Irish loo-la, and how come ye managed to smash everything we have except for that bottle of whiskey on the counter?","even the rat wouldn't use the whiskey as a cover woman!" i retorted, "even rats have standards". She was unimpressed with my macho antics, and claimed that the rat and I were in cahoots in an effort to **** her off. Happily, I did manage to nail the little bollix with a brick in the back garden several days later. She regained her confidence in my manhood and the insurance money covered the damage, all in all, a happy ending. :wah:

By phone, I was informed that the electronic do-dads that you plug in the wall really do work and keep all little critters out of the house. This sounds good to me cause then no one have to handle a mouse corpse, so I am going to check this out at the hardware store and will let you know what I've found out
Has anyone else had any first hand knowledge of this do-dad?

Thanks Snooze, but that really did happen, I'm not making it up, though the dialog might not be exactly right, it was years ago, but its fairly close, she always called me an Irish Loo-la, and the rat definetly didn;t drink the whiskey, f he had, he wouldn't have died so easily let me tell you!. :wah:

Yes, I've heard of these...matter of fact I bought one and placed it underneath my mother's house in the crawl space. No mice and no more skunks are going under her house. I can't remember the exact name of it but it's like, ultrasonic rodent repeller. A hardware store or mail order catalogs carry them.
One thing when using these...don't use them if you have pet mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc., because they create stress on their bodies.
