To cure a head cold, an old time home remidy my Mother used was to put a heaping tablespoon full of "Vicks-vapo-rub" in a small boiling pot of water on the stove. To act like a vaporizor! If really stuffed up you put your head right over the the pot in the steam! It worked pretty good. :wah:

Good thread Cars, if we had a splinter of wood in a finger or a boil anywhere my mum would make a poultice of soap & sugar to draw it out.

Similar, and more.... Vick in a bowl of boiling water, towel over head to make a mini-tent, over bowl.

Brandy as cough medicine.... even though the medical profession would hang me to say this, it works great on young children. You see back in the old days (13 years ago) my youngest had terrible a terrible allergy to Red dye, well guess what folks all kiddies cough medicine back then had red dye in it, yes it was red, orange or purple none was clear back then. So the child had a small shot of brandy at nite time for bad coughs.

Other home remidies, good old salt water as mouth rinse for canker sores, or bit cheeks or tongues.

Granny gave us kids tea and whiskey and lemon for common colds.

Ma always said if you chewed up tobacco and spat it onto a bee sting that drew out the poison and pain.

I found a chewed up asprin or tylenol did the same thing yeah spit it onto the sting.

My friend would always recover from the flu within a day or two with his tried and tested method.

He'd draw as hot of a bath as he could muster.

He'd drink a bottle of brandy and get hammered.

He'd soak.

He'd get out of the tub - bundle himself up and get under the covers and sweat out the flu.

Yes, but not with lemon. 1) Always heat the glass (or mug). 2) Put in sugar and very, very hot water. 3) Top up with two parts of whisky. 4) Drink, repeat as required.

Just remembered, my Grandmother used to cut an onion in half, take one half of the onion (face down) and fry it in a frying pan till browned. Then put the "hot" onion (browned face side down) directly on a boil to draw out the nasty stuff! Can't remember if it really worked that well, but it sure did hurt a lot. :wah: (Today, that might be considered a "tourture" crime! :-2 )

Maybe its the sugar that "draws" the bad out, cos if you brown an onion(caramalise) it goes quite sweet, happen there is something in it eh?

Theres a lot to be said for progress is'nt there?? :D

Your what? Whiskey? That URL doesn't work... AFAIK it's 40% by volume (70 degrees proof), same as Scotch, unless there are other variations such as so-called "cask strength" whisky at up to about 60% ABV. I have actually distilled various spirits at home, including an attempt at "whisky" - it is easy to go too far, and end up with something that needs watering down.

N.B. the Yanks have a really screwy system of measuring proof - I think that absolute alcohol is "200 per cent (I think, maybe it's "degrees") proof" over there, rather than the UK/Ireland version of "degrees proof".

No, in fact it's the samestrength, or weaker than a number of Scotch "cask strength" whiskies.

http://www.whiskymag.com/whisky/brand/j ... ky216.html

However, glugging down 60% ABV whisky is not particularly recommended.

Honey mixed with hot water and lemon soothes a sore throat and cough.
