Most all of what we read comes from the news media and their goal seems to be to find the most controversial stuff they can. The actual 'whole' truth of the situation is not so easily found as it is not considered "news worthy".
Westerners do have a lot to learn about this area of the country and no one will deny that this quest has been brought about by the actions of the extremists. Therefore there is a growing interest in knowing about the culture and the religious background of the people from this area. Churches and colleges are offering a variety of courses and seminars to "enlighten" those of us with questions and a curiosity to know more.
We live in such a varied and complex world, it is impossible to know all we should about everyone. Like the saying "the squeeky wheel gets the grease" so it is with our knowledge of the world. Right now Muslins are in the forefront.
Your SO is now in a unique position of being a representitive of a culture that is of interest to most all people. What she says and how she acts will impact the thinking of many. Though this may be a burden at times, it is also something most exciting.
