The interview I saw about the selection of this said tho Mother Nature was the hands down winner, the people stories would generate the most news......
So there you go.

I'm a TIME subscriber and in the weeks leading up to the announcement, they were running a section where they asked past winners their choice for 2005. The most votes in that survey was Mother Nature. Not an entirely wrong selection.
Yes to Bono indeed.

Ah yes... Bill Gates... I shoulda gone for it!
Years ago, I worked in a place that he came through on a tour... all
my "guy buddies" knowing my propensity for ahem MEN kept
teasing me and saying I should go for it.. this is pre-Melinda of course
and he was ONLY a millionaire back then... and he seemed "interested"
shall we say... but alas, I thought he wasn't my type!!
I think he and Melinda are great... Bono is more recent but I think
definitely a humanitarian, too.
After all, I think it was Oprah who said "If you have a little, give a
little... if you have a lot, give a lot" and Bill and Melinda certainly
have done that...

No. Except he's more than a "wee bit" annoying and pretentious. Way more.
