DIY Man or Her?

Post by capt_buzzard »

Haven't a clue how to put up the flat-pack shelves you got for Christmas? Who does the DIY at your house - Him or Her?

Your introduction to pleasures of DIY could not arrive at a more awkward moment. January/February, or indeed in this part of the world, Springtime is the time to give your home a Spring Clean, or even start home decorating. In Some house-holds it is the Man of the house who does all the work. In others, its the good wife who loves interior decorating.

Ha...that's easy. Me. I'm single, so whatever needs doing, I do it.

Instructions on booklet inside box.

especially in the case of flat-pack furniture, the manual seems to have been written with the express intention of causing the greatest possible confusion (why for example, are the instructions always provided in Latvian or Russian, but only intermittently in English)

Oh sure, you COULD stay up all night sorting the screws and trying to figure why the quivering monstrosity you've assembled at best resembles a surrealist re-interpretation of the photo on the box :-5

Why do you need the instructions for a flat-pack?

I gladly do almost everything... including the bbq'ing, taking out the garbage,

and more jobs traditionally considered "man's work". However, my husband

has turned out to be EXCELLENT at the home repair stuff, putting in a new

garbage disposal, putting in a new part in the washing machine, things like

that.

And he's really good at fixing his own dinner. He eats much later than I can

so it's double shifts as far as that goes!!

I have to admit, I absolutely loathe doing any housework. I live with my younger sister can be a domestic goddess. However absolutely terrible when it comes to flat packed furniture. I, on the other hand, love to put things like that together. Imagine my excitement when the largest Ikea in the southern hemisphere opened up right on my doorstep. Also, Ikea being the from Sweden could explain the "latvian" on the flat pack instructions. I'd rather deal with flat pack furniture any day over furniture delivery people who will knock a hole in your wall to get the couch upstairs!! :wah:

The gift of a drill and home improvement manual can stir wild and irrational desires, such as the compunction to re-plaster a perfectly serviceable bedroom or hang shelves where God decreed shelves were never meant to be hung.

It is worth bearing in mind that home improvement shows are watchable only because so much misery is inflicted on the participants. The lower you set your sights, the less havoc you can wreak.
