I don't know if it's the onset of premature dementia, but I've noticed lately that where my spelling used to be excellent, I now have to stop and think.
Sometimes this is on fairly basic words.
It seems to have come about since I started texting on my phone, as it's a whole new language where most words retain their shape in the absence of vowels. Double letters seem to be a no-no as one will suffice to be phonetic.
What is the long-term impact on the spelling abilities of kids?. Will spelling evolve to acommodate (had to think about that one) this dumbing down of the written word?.
Will b c r u 2 and 4 replace the words they sound like?
I hardly write by hand these days either. As you just have to punch in your P.I.N. number when buying anything, it feels really strange when I write my own signature and I almost feel like I should practice it.

And why wouldn't you put in vowels? I'm not writing ancient Hebrew or anything like that!
I never text message, my kids do. I just pick up the phone and call them.
"Hey, it's your mom here!"

Hw txt fx yr spelin = How text affects your spelling.
The omission of vowels to reduce a word to its minimum recognisible shape is because the aim of the texter (usually young) is to get as many words as possible for the cost of one text message.
That extra letter could end up costing another 10 pence (or 2 shillings in old money)

This is one of my bug bears, Uncle Kram.
I suspect I could be seen as rather anal as I will only use predictive text on my phone and never resort to text spelling. I even have to teach my phone to spell as it accepts words such as color and favorite **evil grin**!! :sneaky:
If the text is becoming too long, then I would rather spend the 12p extra, or phone the person.

So would I but this predominantly affects the generation who are at school and who don't necessarily have the money. The amount of mobile phone credit my daughter and her friends get through is alarming, but the same messages spelt correctly would significantly increase the cost

I wondered if it was money. Most cell phones here don't charge per letter, you have a maximum amount you use per message.

Oh, if a cell phone goes off in class, it is mine! The parent must come up to the school to retrieve it.

How much did this text cost? The story is dated today.....
http://www.mistupid.com/news/
LONDON (Reuters) - British offenders who fail to pay their court fines could receive a text message warning them "to pay up or get locked up."
Under plans outlined by the government Thursday, magistrates courts in England and Wales are to look at sending messages by text or email to fine evaders and those who fail to show up to court or for community service.
The messages warn those that don't comply with their court orders that they could face further action.
It follows a successful trial in Staffordshire, central England, when 150 offenders were sent messages to their mobile phones. Seventy-five percent then immediately paid up.

I do, it's cheaper to call long distance on a cell then the regular phone now.
Mine is on in class, for emergency reasons. Kids know to freeze when it rings.....
Hasn't happened this school year yet!

I hardly write by hand these days either.
I always write "thank you" notes, and other small notes for news from home, being the SOuthern Belle that I am (not something I was taught-just thought it was the right thing to do in my adult life), so I still get writing practice and I always spell out words when "texting" often followed by receivers asking why I write everything out...LOL. I cant tell you how long it took me to figure out what LMAO and BRB were!

I text message my son and my husband all the time and I refuse to abbreviate anything or use u for you or c for see or any of that nonsense. I refuse to use that online "lingo" either. If you can't simply spell out what you're trying to say, you're just friggin' lazy. Sorry to anyone who uses the abbreviated form of communication, but that's my opinion and I'm stickin' to it.

Have to agree with you Snooze. The mobile phone has turned some people into selfish and rude individuals....my eldest grandaughter who I love dearly, came round with the family on Boxing day. She spent most of her time talking to her mates.
The mobile phone is a great invention ( for me anyway). I rarely phone but do send messages to my kids and vice versa. It is an essential for women who go out and about on their own (for emergencies)......It is also useful for people to get hold of me at work as we have no Tannoy or 'paging' system.
I rarely use abbreviations....don't understand them. When I joined FG, I got a glossary of abbreviations from somewhere on the internet just so that I could understand what was being said......before that I used to PM Minks for translation!:-6

Just noticed that there's some washing-up waiting in the kitchen sink. Boy - I must have drunk a lot of tea yesterday!.
My daughters coming later so I'll have the Marigold gloves and Fairy Liquid on standby. She will be pleased. :sneaky:

The latex gloves are just for painting cus I can't be arsed to spend hours after cleaning my hands. Did I manage to wriggle out of that one?
