Some Thoughts on Circumcision

Post by Wolverine »

Discussing circumcision the other day I said, "When, when, when will it end. My god when will the horror end?" Some friends who just had a baby told me what actually happens during this barbaric operation. They strap the innocent, helpless babe into a little "hold him steady while we whittle on his penis" chair, and the screaming and the terror is beyond belief.

Most doctors now admit circumcision has no real beneficial effect on hygiene yet they still strongly recommend that it be done because you don't want the son's penis to look different than his father's penis. Wait a minute. How many families have father/son penis comparison day? I never saw my father's penis. And you know what? I didn't want to. If a little boy does see his father's penis and asks why his looks a little different all you have to say is... "Daddy's wiener was brutalized by a sadistic, money-grubbing health-care system propagating archaic beliefs and rituals to suck more wealth out of a people helpless to defend themselves against the monolith."

Well, that may be a little heavy for a toddler and I'm not even sure that monolith is the word I needed there, but maybe you just say "Daddy... was water skiing one day and..." I don't know what you say. You just say that people are different and that sometimes their "thing" looks different. Of course you should probably use the word penis instead of "thing." In my family it was called dingus, which is fine for awhile but then you have to make that difficult dingus to penis transition somewhere in your life. Otherwise as an adult, women would be weirded out if you referred to it as your dingus.

Anyway, how did this whole idea of clipping the foreskin get started? That's not something anybody tried one day just for the hell of it. Circumcision started as a religious ritual in the Old Testament. God told Abraham to circumcise himself with a sharp rock (a sharp rock making the job a lot easier than a dull one). Maybe there was a good hygiene reason for it back then but now circumcision is just like a Perry Como Christmas special- it costs money, it's torturous and it has no real purpose.

THAT

is seriously F-ed up. how could anyone, in any country think that THAT is a good thing??

Wolfy, this is a valid question. Sentiments about this have changed over the last few years. I had my oldest son in the 1970s, and he was circumcised, there almost wasn't any room for discussion about this subject. I also had decided to nurse my baby, and I was put in an isolated room at the hospital after his birth since I opted not to bottle feed him! That view has since changed.

But my youngest son was born in the late 1980s, and there wasn't as much negativity which new mothers do receive from some doctors about this point.

Build up of smega occurs with very bad hygiene and will occur in females as well as males. It has nothing to do with circumcision and need not occur.

my Nephew isn't.

which, much to my chagrin, makes me wonder if my Brother-in-law isn't.

I thought the pendulum was swinging back towards there IS some evidence

circumcision protects against some cervical cancers. But I also thought

that might have been with multiple partners or something.

I prefer circumcised myself, in fact have never had one "with" and only

seen one with one time when a bunch of us were skinny-dipping. (Yuba

River just above Lake Spaulding if anyone's interested this summer! ;) )

I used to have a friend who worked in medical supplies for a hospital,

he would refuse to deliver "circ trays" (plastic trays with tie downs for

the babies). They got really, really mad at him, but never fired him for

some reason.

I did see a report on one of those TV news magazines (forget which one)

that said some men who weren't wanted to be as adults and went through

the procedure, extremely painful from what I understand.

Before and during WWII, that was one way Hitlerites could tell Jewish

males, they would actually "pants" them to find out. Horrible.

Bris, anyone?

My sons are both uncircumcised, since my hubby didn't want the unnecessary surgery. We were both sorry about that choice when he was 5. It turned out he liked to pull on 'things' and the skin split inside. It got infected and it was really swollen. He was crying and when he was climbing off his bed, he bumped it. OUCH! The infection popped. :( THAT is a reason to have the surgery I think. BTW, he doesn't pull on things anymore.

I think I need to cross-reference to the "What do you do for a living" thread to find out EXACTLY what it is that Clipper does
