I actually watched TV for a half hour last night, and saw an interesting piece on Fox News about a MLK memorial to be constructed in Washington, DC. Here is a link to the propsed memorial.

President's Day. We do not celebrate them on seperate days. I was referring to national holidays were we celebrate one individual on one specific day, selectively. Do we celebrate our individual veterans? No, not even those that earned our highest honor, The Medal of Honor. We have Veterans Day. Why can't we just have a Civil Rights Day to celebrate all civil rights leaders, with Mr. King at the top of the list?
There are plans underway to erect a monument to Mr. King in our nation's capital, something all the other civil rights leaders won't have. Isn't that proper recognition? It's good enough for former presidents and veterans of the the Vietnam and Korean Wars. It seems that celebrating Mr. King has become a pseudo-religion. The celebration has become sacred. If you dare question it, you are evil. I've been contacted by one or more forum members that are refraining from posting in this thread for fear of getting one of those warm and fuzzy tags, like "nazis," racist" or "bigot." That's a sad commentary on debate in our country. We will never resolve the race issues if we can't freely discuss them without adhominem attacks.

Malcolm X was only trying for self betterment. MLK Was out for the betterment of all. MLK was a founding member of NAACP, and he did much to promote the plight of blacks in the south. Obviously you're not black. Put yourself in their shoes if you dare.

15 years after Dr. King's death President Ronald Reagan signed a bill into law making the third Monday of January a national holiday celebrating the birth and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr
But it was a tough time getting the bill passed
First a bill had to be introduced by a member of the House of Representatives. The Speaker of the House assigned the bill to a committee where the bill was discussed in detail. Meetings were held where supporters and opposers could discuss their positions. The committee then agreed that bill should be sent to a vote. The Rules Committee scheduled a debate on the issue. The House of Representatives then voted on the bill. It passed the House with a vote of 338 to 90. Then it was sent to the Senate
Again the issue of the King holiday had to pass through committees and public hearings before a final vote was taken
There were many who opposed the idea of holiday for Dr. King. America had only honored two individuals with national holidays - George Washington and Christopher Columbus. Many felt that there were other Americans that deserved a national holiday, such as Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy
One barrier to the confirmation was the Senator from Georgia who had denounced Dr. King as a communist
Others feared the King holiday was meant as a way to make up to African-Americans for slavery. Other feared the cost of the holiday, with the extra overtime paid to federal workers who had to work on the holiday as well as millions to those federal employees who were paid for the day
Senator Bob Dole pointed out to those critics '"I suggest they hurry back to their pocket calculators and estimate the cost of 300 years of slavery, followed by a century or more of economic, political and social exclusion and discrimination"
It took many years for Congress to decide to celebrate the holiday. In the years leading up to the official decree many African-Americans celebrated the birthday themselves with a few states declaring King's birthday a state holiday. The bill was finally passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate and was signed into law on November 2, 1983
The first national celebration of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday took place January 20, 1986. This year the King holiday will be celebrated on Monday January 16, 2006. The theme of this years holiday is Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off!!
Is MLK controversial sure he is, was he the greatest person in the world, no not in the least, but he is the man that made the majority change their mind set.

After reading more about the man I agree he may have been more militant at first then we recognize, but something made him change his mind and become passive and non violent. I'm a "religious' man myself, I know whats right to do, but my passions seem to get the better of me, sometimes Im able to recognize that and make things right and move on. I can tell you this much, if theses were MY people, I'd have fought and I would not have done it without violence.
It takes a lot of heart to do what he did.

When you post something for informational purposes, it is natural for anyone to infer that you believe such information to be true. That's endorsement. Do your research and it should be easy to avoid such misunderstandings, if it was a misunderstanding. Make the effort to distance yourself from people you don't wish to be associated with, and people won't associate you with them.
