Ladies' Drinks

Post by abortretryfail »

Recently I've been told that I drink ladies' drinks. By this I mean things that are fruity or sweet, rather than just beer or scotch. I’ve always been one to go for the “foofy” drinks, anything that sweet and mixed. The site that I use for my drink recipes, www.thebar.com, does not include a search category for gender, so I am wondering if it's real or imagined. What do you think? Are there drinks that are just for the ladies? Any guys out there that drink fancy mixed drinks?

Much the reverse for me, Beer is my drink of choice, round these parts not many "ladies" drink beer. Never mind straight out of the bottle no glass please.

Girl after my own heart!!

I like most drinks, I used to love a Ramos Fizz with Sunday Brunch (or

CHAMPAGNE, of course!) but have been known to knock back the 7/7's

on occasion!

Long Island Iced Teas are strong but I've seen men and women drinking

those.

Generally speaking, anyone that likes sweet mixed alcohol drinks, does not enjoy the taste of the scotch, bourbon, vodka etc. alone. The sweet sugary mix will conceal the taste of the alcoholic beverage. Water or soda on the other hand, dilutes, but does not alter the taste of an alcoholic beverage. People that like sweet mixed drinks could save lots of money by sticking to coke, seven up or orange juice, as well as avoiding nausea and hangovers attributable to the sugar.

Champagne in the morning, Champagne in the evening, and Champagne at supper time..!!
ALOHA!!

MOTTO TO LIVE BY:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.

WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"

Not necessarily a lady drink but national drink here has passed my lips on occassions :)

Bundy and coke - quite sweet but definately more-ish

Usually stick to coffee - black, unsweetened

As a bartender for 15 years and a drunk for 7 years, I can tell you from experience that there are no "men's" or "women's" drinks. Take a Pink Lady, or, say, a Cosmopolitan, rename it a Machine Gun or a Karate Chop, and whammo....instant guy drink. It's the names of drinks, and not the ingredients that tend to separate them into gender labels in people's minds. Drink what you want, the hell with what anyone thinks.

You are so right BR... as an ex TarBender... errrr.. Bartender it was funny to watch people go nuts over a drink name..

My own personal cocktail prefernces... beer mainly... but I do enjoy wine with dinner.. and for after dinner.. hmmmm.. rusty nails right now. but B&B is good.. as well as a good single malt..

How about ages? Do you think that younger drinkers go for the sweeter stuff? I accept what the pro bartenders say as gospel, because my impressions are nothing compared to the exp. you get doing that. Actually, bartenders, I've been thinking about doing it for a living, got any advice? Am I just feeling like I know something about mixing drinks because of www.thebar.com, or is there an art to it that takes years of experience? Here's what I made last night, it's called a Yucatan-Style Sangrita:

Ingredients

• 1.5 oz. Don Julio Añejo Tequila

• 1 28 oz. can of tomatoes

• 1 cup orange juice

• .03 cup lime juice

• 1 slice white onion

• 1 seeded green chile

• 1 tsp. sugar

• .25 tsp. hot pepper sauce

• 1 wedge lime

................................................................................

Preparation

• Add tomatoes, orange juice, lime juice, white onion, green chile, sugar, and hot pepper sauce in a blender

• Blend until smooth and pour enough to fill a tequila shot glass

• Add Don Julio Añejo Tequila to another tequila shot glass

• Garnish with lime wedge

Sweet and spicy, that's how I like _my_ drinks.

You can know how to mix every drink known to man to perfection and it doesn't mean you'd make a good bartender. Bartending is about 10% knowing what ingredients go in what drinks and 90% attitude. Do you like people? Do you have thick skin? Can you be diplomatic? Can you listen to people's complaints and problems and not complain to your customers? Can you be tough when you have to, even with people you consider friends? There's way more to bartending than knowing how to mix drinks and some of the best bartenders I know got started by lying, saying they knew what they were doing and skated by on attitude.

Best way I can tell you to figure out if you're cut out for it, is go to one of the busiest bars around you. Watch the head bartender for several hours and listen to them. Make sure you see them on a very busy night so you can get a feel for what it's really like. It's hard work. I tell people I love my job and I get paid to come to a party, but it is truly hard work.

All the busiest bars around here are gay bars. Not that I mind visiting a gay bar to check it out, but I don't know if gay clientele misbehave as much as straight people. I will take your advice, though, I would imagine that it is an extremely stressful job, and that you have to be good at dealing with people under the influence. Do bartenders drink while they are working? I've been in bars and seen bartenders drinking, but never seen a drunk bartender (other than Jack from www.thebar.com).

Drinking customers are drinking customers. Doesn't matter if they are gay or straight. Dealing with "misbehaving" customers is also a small part of your job.

I drank a lot when I was bartending. I probably still would if I drank at all anymore. Most of the bartenders I work with do drink while on duty. Some can handle it, some can't. Some owners allow you to drink with your customers, some do not. In fact, it is against the law (in the States) to consume alcohol while serving it, but lots of places don't care about that.

Thanks for the info. I think I'd start to screw up real quick if I drank while working. I wouldn't mind having a drink towards the end of my shift though.

I'd like to get a gig like Jack on www.thebar.com, I wonder if that was a real bartender they used or just an actor?

Any idiot can pour a drink but a Real barman is born.

They have to be jack of all trades and master of none.

Doctor, lawyer, councillor, mother, best friend, sporting guru, fountain of all trivia, lover, diplomat, shrink, gardener, mechanic, computer nerd, cook, bouncer, etc etc

In the old days they said never discuss religion, sex and politics, other than that you needed to be able to engage in every other topic under the sun. Now tho we need to do the 3 sins too but without having a real opinion so as not to cause offence!!

Who ever said working a bar was easy - but hey I LOVE IT, what other job can a gal of my age get paid to chat up the guys :D

Well - there's always escorting... j/k Yeah, I guess you have to really be cut out for a job like that. That's cool, though, I'm glad there are people who are, I'm just increasingly realizing that I'm not. Oh well. At least I learned some great drinks. Drank Bourbon and hazelnut liqueur last night, twas really good (thebar.com calls it a "Bourbon Yule Levit").

And none taken. Actually, I was thinking you were unclear about my gender. The term barMAID is annoying to me personally, only because I don't like anyone thinking I am their "maid." So I appreciate you avoiding the use of bar"maid"! :yh_bigsmi
