Absolutely nothing. An occasional bit of wit to the most serious of discussions can prevent a chronic depressive state of mind.

George Carlin has made a great career of proving anything can be funny. I tend to agree. He even made rape funny. I made the mistake of listening to one of his cds while trying to eat dinner once.

I think we joke about everything these days.
What is wrong is when someone deliberately baits another person by joking about something they know will hurt them just to get a rise out of them. That's cruel.
What is important, I think, is the movtive behind the joking. Even then, problems can arise when someone not involved decides to get angry over what they preceive anothers feeling about something might be. It's great to stand up for others, but people don't have to take on every single battle for another person. As individuals we should speak for ourselves.

some of the funniest things take a few days before you can laugh about them.

JAB wrote: To me, I suppose, it would all be about the timing. If someone had a serious accident or something, it may not be funny at the time it happens. Weeks, months or years down the road, it can be very funny - even to the person who had experienced it in the first place.
I agree. Timing is everything. There are some things that when I'm struggling with them, I am NOT amused by shows or jokes that make fun of the situation. It's only after "I've let go" of the distress that I can laugh over it -- then it's my laugh of relief, not someones laugh of ridicule.

I remember being on a photoshoot when the photographer, after the perfect picture, was moving backward and fell into the swimming pool. The model and I did our best to keep a straight face all the way back to the hotel room but by the time we hit the elevator with the watersoaked photographer and his very expensively dripping camera we couldn't contain ourselves.
There are more sensitive moments involving real trauma but this one just popped into mind.

Lightens the moment, then again what I think is funny others mightn't :-6
And what hurts some people may not hurt others. I tend to make a joke about lots of things, especially since so much stuff can be laughed at. Not to mention, so many people are so damn stupid, (especially in my line of work, there are just too many targets out there to pass up) A lot of times it can p!ss people off. I have yet to lose any sleep over it though.

Years ago, Seinfeld had a show wherein they made fun of the Kennedy
assasination.
NOT funny. In quiet protest, I never watched the show again.
Some of you younger types may think I'm an old fuddy duddy, I don't
care.

I remember Johnny Carson ad libbed a crack about the JFK assassination about 25 years ago. The audience giggled nervously, and Carson had a sheepish grin on his face. You could tell he regretted saying it.
Then the '90s came around, and it was fair game. The Seinfeld show did a whole bit on it when Oliver Stone's JFK was released.
The Simpsons have referenced the Hindenberg disaster at least twice.
