Well the helmet law passed the house and senate and is sitting on the Governor's desk. But she claims she is going to veto it. Time for Michiganders to voice their opinion start writing letters to the governor's people. Governor Jennifer M. Granholm

Gary Busey almost died from a head injury while riding his motorcyle, and he's still vehemently anti-helmet. From all accounts, he suffered brain damage and never fully recovered.
Ahh, gotcha. Gary Busey also rides his scoot like an @sshole AND rides drunk and under the influence of other things.

As a biker, I am always concerned with my safety first. I don't drink, so that's never a worry, and I don't partake of anything that could impair my judgement or reactions if I'm on my bike. I believe it should be a bikers choice whether or not to wear a helmet and this Granholm b!tch is going to blow my chances of doing that out of the water. :-5 LC, don't yell at me when you read this!!!!

I gotta go check out Arnold's link now....back shortly.

I have always worn helmets when I ride, just my preference:-6
Good for you, and that's all I want is the choice. :-6

Whenever our club goes for a ride to Ohio, as soon as all the bikes are over the state line, we pull over, ditch the helmets, and continue on. *sigh* Can't wait for our first Ohio run....

Now Arnold, let's not pick on ferrets. :-2

Ferrets are fun, frolicing, furry animals who love to roll and play with one another. That dance they do is called a "happy dance". Nothing mad about them at all!!!!

Oh it's bad, all right. What REALLY sucks? I've still got like, 3 MONTHS before I'll really be able to ride. I may go completely insane by then.

Do you ride your own, MrsK, or on the back of the SO's?

Boy, for years I've really been around and around with people on this one.

I think helmets should be a CHOICE. I wouldn't mind having the rider prove

he or she could cover medical expenses, but that's really all most people

are up in arms about is having to pay for an un-insured bikers medical costs.

They don't even consider all the other stuff we're paying for, like pregnant

women who come to this country to give birth...

Don't mean to offend, that's just the way it is. IMHO, of course.

It does not offend, Val, it's a valid point. In my world, all my biker pals have insurance to cover medical in case of an accident. It's funny to me, though , that a large majority of motorcycle accidents are not the fault of the biker. We're hard to see and get no courtesy or respect on the roads.

Ask LC how often when arriving at the scene of a bike/car wreck the driver says, "But....I just didn't SEE them."

I will never claim that there aren't way too many bikers on the road that take stupid chances, though. I've done it myself. It's a thrill, no doubt and not a habit, but occassionally, you've just got to open that throttle. :yh_bigsmi :yh_devil

Choice is the thing. I get sick when people think that because they themselves would do a thing a certain way, everyone should be required to do it that way too.

Make a choice, act on that choice, and take responsibility for your actions. That's what adults do.

It's smart to wear seatbelts, but don't mandate it.

It's smart to wear a helmet, but don't mandate it.

I choose to lock my doors or not.

I choose to eat meat or not.

I choose to drink to excess or not.

I choose to smoke or not, in public or not.

I choose to remain faithful to my wife or not.

I choose to vote or not, having researched the candidates or not.

I choose to budget or not.

I choose to excercise or not.

I choose to continue this list ad nauseum or not.

I choose all these behaviors and happily accept responsibility for those decisions, as should everyone else. We don't need laws mandating them.

Yaaaaaaay

PA is another State that gives you a choice re: wearing a helmet or not. The controversy here though, is that folks feel the seat belt law should be a choice then too, not mandatory.

Oh how true and it is really scary when you're driving along and all of a sudden there one is, where there was no on before............

I remember back in my early twenties (like it was yesterday) I was getting on a freeway and had to change into the 3rd lane in order to take the split to the left. I very carefully signaled and changed one lane at a time.

Then, out of no where, I'm moving into a cyclist, A COP NO LESS! Scared the hell out of me! He saluted and moved on..............

I don't ever want that feeling again! When I see cyclists, I give them their space.

I resent having to buckle up. I'd like to be able to decide when I want to use them. I would use them on freeways and long trips, but not just to run up to the store and around town.

I do now wear mine ALL THE TIME since I had to pay an $85 fine for not having one on when I was in Pennsylvania. That fine irritates me still!

I think the decision should be yours, as well. As for their use, I'm not certain of the stats, but I'm sure the majority of fatal accidents happen very close to the home, often when people are on short trips. Wear the belt.
