Weird happenings in my CD ROM Drive

Post by Cass »

Okay.. yesterday my daughter was playing a computer game on her PC when it stopped working and froze up.

I told her to reboot, which she did... and the drive would still not read the CD so I told her to just try another game.

When we opened the drive...........the CD was shattered into a million pieces, it looked like shards of glass.. it was crazy..... I removed what I could - but I am certain many fragments fell through the hole on the CD tray into the PC below.

What could cause a CD to literally explode like this?? what can I do about getting all those shards out of there?

Dunno.

Open the case and shake them out (else remove carefully with something).

I've seen this happen with CDs before. This usually occurs to a CD that has some flaw in the manufacturing process, making it slightly off balance. When this happens, they can literally 'explode' from the spinning forces.

Best thing to do is to completely dismantle the drive and BE ABSOLUTELY SURE you remove all the shards. Should that prospect sound unpleasant, it might be best to buy a new drive (fortunately CD-ROMs are affordable nowadays).

Of course, I just looked at the date this was posted, and realize that this advice is probably too late to be useful. Oh well, such is life.

While 'problem free' and 'computer' is a bit of an oxymoron, I'm glad that you're up and running again!

I wondering as well.. Although hacking happens, it doesn't usually happen on new machines.. unless you were using someone elses CD's for something, or didn't have the proper safeguard installed yet..

I have been in this business since 1972...We throw the word HACKED around a bit much... :p Today I would say, being SPYED on is the norm..

If a brand new computer came to a grinding halt.. you have other problems.. Unless your were using software that wasn't registered, or from someone else.. Game CD have a huge amount of spyware on them...GAMES WILL CLOG A PC QUICKLY..

Cass, CD'S explode every now and them.. defect.. I know you wouldn't remove a Computer case without first disconnecting the power, and waiting a bit.

Shaking isn't such a good idea either.. may scratch other surfaces.. SWIFTER, AND CANNED AIR... GENTLE REMOVE THE SHATTERED CD.. :D
ALOHA!!
