How can we know how to respect others when we don't respect ourselves....... we have lost the sense of what is right. We cater to the wrong doers giving them more 'rights' than victims and the innocent.
In a country where full freedom of speech and press is the rule and where nothing is sacred anymore, why should we think that this cartoon was "wrong". Would the same cartoon with Bush instead of a muslim created such a storm of protest?
Yes I think respect should be accorded others, but it is not something that can be demanded from people -- it is a gift we give one another.

Hmmm.. let me see if I have this right..
We are supposed to respect a group despises us. The last I knew, respect is supposed to be mutual and earned not just given because someone or some group feels that the deserve it.
Had that cartoon been drawn or published in an Islamic publication depicted Jesus or God holding a bomb shaped cross would it have garnered the same reaction.. armed gunmen threatening innocents.. an interesting question you think.
Sorry.. I can't respect someone that is forcing me to respect them.. acutally you would get the exact opposite reaction.. disrespect..

Given the current fragile 'climate' between some religions at the moment, it was probably unwise to print such a cartoon in a newspaper. Given the high proportion of Muslims that live in Denmark I am surprised at the ignorance shown towards the Muslim religion regarding the prophet Mohammed.
Had a Christian or Jew seen a cartoon where God or Jesus was being ridiculed or disrespected, I suspect there would have been an outcry albeit more muted.
IMO these things can and should be addressed in a less hysterical way.....violence is not the answer.

Should have touched on the 'respect' side of this thread...
From MY point of view. I respect ALL religions and the people who embrace these religions.
I DO NOT respect the people who commit heinous crimes in the name of their religion or try and manipulate the words of 'Holy writings / texts' in a way that subjugates any social group e.g. women.
In general, setting religion, race etc aside, I believe that the human race as a whole has little respect for it's people or environment at the moment.

They're pissed off?! Islamic atrocities go back to the dawn of that religion. Muhammad himself got his start by capturing and burning his home city, after preying on caravans with his group of mauraders to gain power. Islamic armies trashed the Hindus in India, ambushed Christian pilgrims in Europe setting off the Crusades, and committed genocide in Bosnia. More recently, Hamas invented homicide bombing even to the extent of blowing up childen's toy stores! And then there's 9/11. 2000 of our own countrymen, innocent non-combatants, slaughtered!
Whatever argument you want to make, whatever statement you have, whatever cause or unjustness you think you have suffered...when you resort to blowing up innocent children, your cause is no longer just or worthy.
F**k 'em! They are not men in any sense of the word.

PARIS - The Paris newspaper France Soir has fired its managing editor after the daily printed caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad that have sparked rising protests and boycotts in the Muslim world.
The daily confirmed that owner Raymond Lakah had fired Jacques Lefranc on Wednesday evening after a tumultuous day on which German and Spanish dailies ran the controversial cartoons that first appeared in the Danish daily Jyllands-Posten.
Angered by the drawings, Palestinian gunmen jumped on the outer wall of a European Union office in Gaza City on Thursday and demanded an apology. Masked gunmen also briefly took over an EU office in Gaza on Monday.
Islamic tradition bars any depiction of the prophet to prevent idolatry. The drawings have prompted boycotts of Danish goods and bomb threats and demonstrations against Danish facilities, and have divided opinion within Europe and the Middle East.
The cartoons include an image of Muhammad wearing a turban shaped as a bomb with a burning fuse, and another portraying him holding a sword, his eyes covered by a black rectangle.
Syria has called for those behind publishing the cartoons to be punished. Danish goods were swept from shelves in many countries, and Saudi Arabia and Libya recalled their ambassadors to Denmark.

For a religion that claims non-violence, they are shure doing a pretty good job of not demonstrating it. I realize that no religion is not guilty of violence, but, to actively advocate death to all that oppose you or insult your beliefs is just a bit extreme.
And as far as the suicide bombers goes, they are just carrying on an up dated tradition started in Turkey with the assassins... scary as that may sound..

I know people from many religions
Muslims included and none of the ones l call friends condone or believe that the only way to settle an argument is through violence, in fact the can not stand it and hate the fact that their religion has been basterdised into a hate filled mockery..
I cringe when l read the thoughts of people l believe to be well read and knowledgable to be filled with such closed minded thoughts, hatred and xenaphobia, not to mention the anti-semitism...
Dont just get the view of the loud mouth out there screaming his thoughts and shouting for blood, ask those behind alll of that just trying to live a peaceful calm and trouble free life like the rest of us. Loving their families, friends and showing respect and tolerance to their friends and neighbours.
How are we ever to show our children love, respect, honesty and tolerance when we are running around hating anything that is different to us??
Should we not be the ones to stand tall and say " enough is enough, we are all children of the earth and we should have more respect for ourselves and her"!!

I absolutely agree with everything you have said Venus. I think that the UK is a small country where most of live in VERYclose proximity to our neighbours. We HAVE to get on . The alternatives are Just too awful to imagine. We already struggle to live our lives with all the ordinary stuff that goes on.
If only all this bad energy was turned into good energy, what a great planet we would live on. :-6
Mustn't get too gloomy though...don't have to look far to find the wonders of life luckily....grandchildren, nature etc.

I agree Bez, there is good and evil on htis planet and even though we cannot ignore the evil l will not let it pollute me and my family...
I show hopefully to my child that respect is given to an individual regardless of colour, creed, etc, if they do not respect you just stay away...
It takes up far too much time and effort to hate for hatings sake, and do not hate an entire nation because some are bad, other wise we would have to hate everyone!!
(I apologise tfor the terrible english by the way..)

And yet on the whole, the Muslim majority has done absolutely nothing to stop the violence. That makes them guilty by association. Think about it, if there were radical Christians out there suicide bombing children and ramming planes into buildings, wouldn't you and I do everything we can to stop it?
Yet the vast majority of the Muslim population not only won't lift a finger to stop their radical elements, they agree with them.
And the ones that don't agree and dare to even print a cartoon about it? They are threatened with death. Reminds me of Nazi Germany. Don't try to mitigate or stick up for the Muslim faith, girls. If they truly were agiainst the radical branches of their religion, they would be doing something.

My lifelong friend is a Navajo, my other friends are Hispanic. I have absolutely no problem with people who are different. I do, however, have a problem with any people that subscribe to a religion that condones killing my wife, myself, my grandchildren, and...you. If you truly want to be tolerant, why not take a trip to Iran? Walk down any street there with a jacket carrying an American Flag on it. See what happens.
Personally, I am incensed that you seem to feel that we, the victims of their attacks, are somehow to blame for their hatred. Your whole "can't we all just get along" approach isn't going to work with psychopaths!

The 60's are over, put away your "flower power" sign. Radical Islamics want one thing, total power and death to anyone, including all those you love, that get in their way. They are vicious animals of the worse kind.
I'm not willing to give the moderate Islamics a break until I see that they are doing everything they can to cut out the cancer in their midst. Until I see that, they are a part of the problem.

Tell me where in any of what l wrote did l say l condoned killing?
I am aghast that you seem to think from what l am reading that l agree with anyone taking an innocent life...no never and if a radical were to try preaching haterd to me l would stand up to him as l would anyone who promotes hatred
and as for the just get along comment... no Jives l do not say we have to get along with psychopaths or sociopaths etc, l have studies enough to know that peoples of that mind set can not be reasoned with.
What l was trying to point out is that l wil not hate a person because they happen to be a certain religion or colour... and that by standing up and saying l will not hate l feel l am showing the only way forward for us as a species...
Of course l would protect my loved ones...but my friends do not hate me, or ridicule me because of my beliefs or dress and neither will l do it to them.
So if l were brouight up catholic or protestant in Ireland (sorry for using that one again) and my family did not try to stop the violence would thst make them as guilty as the terrorists...
If an American soldier committed a terrible act against another and his comrades did not stop it, does that make all soldiers bad, hell no.
There are many who are trying to help stop this hatred and killing, but no matter what they say they are criticised.
There are bad and good people in this world Jives no matter what you and l say to one another, all l want is for people to take stock of their own words before they slam another saying that are spilling hatred everywhere...
How many times has someone said damn Muslims they hate us just bomb em....
Ive heard it and its like two wrongs do not make a right, and the act of tolerance and understanding has to start somewhere...

I refuse to respect child murderers, and so should you.
My lifelong friend is a Navajo, my other friends are Hispanic. I have absolutely no problem with people who are different. I do, however, have a problem with any people that subscribe to a religion that condones killing my wife, myself, my grnadchildren, and...you.

I guess I feel I'm entitled to a little 'hope' for the world. I feel really threatened by the radical fractions everywhere....I have no answers.....only opinions.

I just do truly believe we should not judge all because of some..
I was a bit of a biker chick in younger years and the judgements that were thrown towards an entire group because some were radical in thoughta actions and deeds,,
I have learnt never to judge all because of many, its just not my way..
Maybe l am being naieve or hippy in my thinking, but like bez said there are beautiful things to be grateful for and love is one of them...

You implied it when you stated that we should all try to get along with people who are doing that. "Getting along" with murderers is the same as condoning murder.

Well thank goodness for that!

Not even if their religion is Satanism? Or the Klu Klux Klan?

You're a decent person. Better than I by far. I WILL hate people whose religion teaches them tht it is right to kill my family. Call me petty...pfft.

That's what I'm saying. If the largely Moderate (yes, I know there are far more moderates than radicals) islamic world would take a public stance begin an active campaign to eradicate the radical branch of their faith, I wouldn't be so judgemental.
But I'm not seeing it. As a matter of fact, by the latest poll, 75% of all Islamics say that is is OK to kill nonbelievers.
Ive heard it and its like two wrongs do not make a right, and the act of tolerance and understanding has to start somewhere...
My father killed a lot of Nazis. In my opinion his wrong, killing, DID make out a right out of their wrong, genocide. So that saying may be true for 5-year olds on the playground, but I don't believe it's true for nations engaged in historical battles.

Yes, actually it reflects what all of us are saying. Both you and I hope for a better future, and good (people like you and I) must overcome evil. (Radical Islamic Extremists).
What we are debating is the method of overcoming evil. You two are for understanding, compasision, negotiation, and compromise. Worthy goals.
I, however, am for annihilation of evil. I, unfortunately, don't think any amount of talk, compassion, or negotiation will ever have any effect on true evil ( people who bomb children's toy stores.)
So we're mostly on the same side with the exception of methods.

Right ok lets try and sort this out...
I do not now or ever condone murder violence or the killing of innocents.....INNOCENTS
the none radical , fanatasist, religion twisting loonies that we have in this world....
I would like many like to see those types removed from this world, the people l am defending are those who have no malice and hatred towards us but are clumped together with the fanatasists because their religion has the same name...
and not the same teachings..
The Muslims l know are shocked and angered by the use of their religion for a mans gain, its is not about hate and death, but tolerance and respect..
The imlpying that we should get along was also once again for those who are as far as l see it are true Muslims.. They want nothing to do with these evil twisted people. And how many Muslims are there in the world, and how many take part in these polls, and how accurate are they??
The many l know would not even phone up etc because they see that kind of thing as playing into the hands of the fanatasists and those who hate then and would happily see them wiped off the face of the earth.
I see religion as nothing but another way to seperate and segregate us, how many deaths have their been because of religion... How many men, women and children have to die because of religion...
I understand people have their own beliefs and no as you said Jives l would not undersatnd someone who was a member of the kkk, or a satanist, and to be frank a jehovah witness as l cannot understand allowing a person to die for the sake of a blood transfusion or an organ transplant. If that were my loved one l would rip out my own organ if l could make them well again.
One of the few peoples who have gotten it right(in my oinion) have been followers of budda, even native american indians. They believed if lm right (feel free to correct me) the mother earth and everything being connected and having a spirit..
They from what l know took only what was needed and left the rest with respect.
It probably is a little naive of me to want the world to be a safe loving place, because there are always going to be those who will want war, if for nothing else the profit it will make them. and the chance to keep on hating those who are different from themselves.
I just keep hoping that we all can learn a litttle more everyday about others around us and l mean all ,not just those grabbing the headlines with words and acts of anger and hate. For isnt knowledge the greatest power on earth next to love?

The Viet cong cut off the arms of the children we innoculated. All war is atrocity as you well know, Scrat. Yet you doggedly insist on blaming all evil in the world on America.
THE SANCTIONS IN IRAQ IN THE 90s KILLED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF IRAQI CHILDREN.
Yes. Isn't it a shame that their leader was a madman that attacked Kuwait? He is responsible for all those deaths.
Look at the Israeli and Palastinian conflict, why are the Palastinians so ''savage" and "evil", has it anything to do with living under the heel of some of the most prejudiced people on earth?
I don't see the Israelis homicide bombing children's toy stores, do you? As a matter of fact, I don't see them homicide-bombing at all. I think they have been very reserved in their response to unmitigated terror towards their children.
What purpose does Israel serve in our scheme of things?
They are our friends, and have been since the Holocaust. This is what your friends would like to repeat, Scrat: Take a good look:
That is what the Palestinians would like to do to the Israelis...and that would be fine with you, wouldn't it Scrat?
Is the fact that America has perpetrated the inequalities in the middle east because of our greed a "good" thing Jives?
How do you figure that we are responsible for the violence? The Taliban didn't need any help from us to ruthlessly repress their own people. And exactly what did all those innocent people in the Twin Towers do that made them deserve violent death, Scrat? You love the terrorists, explain it to me.
I think you and Americans like you bring things like this onto all of us. But of course Jives, it's somebody elses fault isn't it?
I'm just a humble southwestern school teacher Scrat. Until 9/11 I had absolutely no problem with Muslims. Now that they have slaughtered my countrymen, I have no respect or mercy for them. You, however, love them and comfort them. To you, 9/11 was all our fault. Try telling that to the dead.
You, Scrat, would have been on the side of the Japanese after Pearl Harbor because "America perpetuated the inequality of the pacific." They have a word for people who support the enemy in a conflict, Scrat. Traitor.
I wonder how many excuses you can come up with for the evil in your life Jives.
lol. I don't support terrorism or countries that harbor them Scrat, you do. I teach children everyday the skills they need to get a job, I counsel them when life is hard on them, and I cheer their successes. I love my country and support it, I even volunteered to give my life so that you could spout your anti-American agenda without fear. In what way am I evil?
Care to answer that?
Now you have a few things to answer for:
1. Why do you support countries that are the enemy of America?
2. Why do you wish for the destruction of America and the deaths of innocent Americans?
3. Why are you so evil, Scrat?

those who feel they have been subject to abusive behavior *need to report the posts themselves*.
posts being reported by proxy carry a tiny fraction of the weight they would otherwise.
as we state repeatedly, we want forumgarden users to police themselves. 99% of the time, that policing can be accomplished by shunning. if someone's being an unmitigated *******, then don't respond. if the person continues posting in a hostile way, even without getting responses, then that suggests there's an axe that needs some dulling, which we're happy to look into.

as this has been posted in the form of a question (though lacking an actual question mark), it cleverly avoids *directly* attacking the user. however, its basis in rhetorical cleverness belies the intent. this is a bullshit comment.
the "question" is overtly offensive, because it implicates without any basis for the implication. the "question" allows you to insult someone while hiding behind the mask of 'merely asking'.
for various reasons, i won't use the example that's most commonly used to expose the egregious nature of this comment. so i'll modify it.
BTS, when did you stop beating your dog?
there's no defensible answer to the "question". the person to whom the question was posed is forced to deny an assertion that has already tarred their reputation.
so here's my go at this crap:
i never spit on any vietnam vets. i did march in peace protests as a child (i was only 13 when the vietnam war ended). i respect that most of the soldiers who went to vietnam were conscripts, men forced to a fight a war they didn't want to fight. at the same time, i also refuse to whitewash atrocities committed by SOME of our troops - or have we forgotten the my lai massacre? scrat's example of the little girl is a poor one, as it was *the south vietnamese* who dropped that napalm, on the wrong target. nevertheless, it was an atrocity of war - some might say all war is an atrocity.
there were indeed american GI's who were baby killers. who murdered innocent civilians. am i supposed to respect a vietnam vet who proudly boasts that "he killed lotsa civilian gooks"? i think not.
all that said, there is a disconnect apparent here - that there were some bad soldiers doesn't mean all were bad. some fought courageously. as it was - it was some other american GI's who flew in on my lai and *stopped* the massacre from going further. heroes and villains, wearing the same colors.
as one might guess, i'm pissed off. i don't like FG users attacking other forumgarden users. BTS is shitdisturbing, and i'm poised for imposing a permanent ban.
he can remedy the situation of course. it's his choice.
