I thought that Star Trek was set in interstellar space, not Nevada? Though I would of course be interested in any road trip involving yourself and herself, as it were. I hope that you have been well CG, I must admit I do admit that I miss your erudition and unfailing grace. Well, Vegas it is then.

Thank you BR, it is nice to be missed and appreciated, I have also missed the boards myself as I enjoy the posts of many of the people here, including yourself. If I can at all manage to post more over the coming days I will do so.

Oh I think I have broken my 1,000 post virginity also, how exciting, I feel that in some way I have achieving something significant.

Hello MrsK, thank you for being so kind, I see that you are an Australian, and that for some reason pleases me, as you are aware from my flag I am Irish, though don't worry too much about that, I've already had much of the drunken, violent, and excessively emotional side of my nature beaten out of me by other even drunker and more violent Irish people. My purpose on this thread is to act as a lightning rod, as a sort of cyber roman catholic priest in the confessional, a councilor if you will, though this will in general involve me laughing at other peoples problems which many people find cruel, though I find, well, amusing. Anyway, nice to meet you again.

G'day.

Dear abbey, I am not very up to date with FG, as I hardly have time to respond to my own patients terrible afflications on this thread. Though I would say that in general if you are not initially gifted at the activity being scored then cheat, lie, bribe or sleep with the person making the scores. It has been a tried and tested method through the ages.

Dear Snooze at the risk of appearing unprofessional, happy valentines day, I hope that you have a queue of kisses lined up. Back to the problems related smears, wel, there are several ways of dealing with this. if they are ordinary smears you should put some vinegar or lemon juice in abut a litre of water and wash them out using newpaper, dry them with newspaper as well, however, these smears may be of a somewhat different nature, of course in this instance it may be necessary to explain the origin of the smears themseleves (though this may not be approporiate on a public thread. Well, enjoy your day, please do not fail to contact me should any advice become necesary.

Dear Dr Galbally

It is well known that the space/time continuum is curved but a curve when extended is flat, so do you think that if we laid the planet earth out flatly on the ground I could still walk across the world in 80 days instead of around it?

An interesting question Jenny, you are of course correct in the fact that (as postulated by Einstein) spacetime is indeed "curved" and that what we percieve as the action of gravity are bodies following straight-line courses through a curved multi-dimsensional universe. In heteroic superstring (or "M") theory it is postulated that there are at least 11 dimsensions, 10 space 1 time, though most of these dimensions are too small to be of practical consequence to us.

I presume you are asking whether we could take the 3-D sphere of the Earth's surface and lay it out as a 2-D plane and subsequently walk across it. Now in purely geometrical terms this is of course easily possible, however, in terms of physics, we would be unable to do so as we would actually have to take the mass of the SOLID sphere of the earth and lay it out on a flat plane floating in 3-D space, and the surface area of this plane would be vastly greater than the surface of the earth now, as of course only a tiny fraction of the matter comprising the earth makes up it surface. Therefore if such a plane were produced it would take far longer than 80 days to walk across it, and of course gravity would no longer be at 1 G earth normal, therefore the atmoshpere would not remain in situ, and many other complications would set in.

The short answer is NO.

Thank you Dr. Galbally.

Maybe you can clear another one up for me.

Do you agree or disagree?

At the moment considering our known technologies it is highly unlikely that we would ever encounter aliens here on our planet due to the sheer distance.

I don't mean that they don't exist, my point being is that we would never meet them if things should not advance.

So my uncle who claims to come from Mars has been lying to me all these years? :-2

Dear Jenny, I see that questions of science are plauging you somewhat tonight, well to answer the second question.

Again you are bascially correct in that as far as our physics tells us, it is impossible for matter to travel at any velocity greater than that of light. This puts a bar on how easy it would be for any space faring civilization to travel to other, inhabited worlds, not impossible just requires being very long-lived as a species or procreating on-route, hibernation ect.

Currently scientists are of the opinion that the probability of there being life on extra-solar planets is very very high, and that the possiblity of their being intelligent life on extra-solar planets is also very high, due to the sheer numbers of probable planets involved. However, the probability of their being space-faring civilizations on other worlds is controversial, but we can almost certainly assume that the probabity of their being a space-faring civilization within several thousand light years radius from earth is very low indeed, it is currently believed therefore that such things as UFOs and the assorted carnival of events, dissapearances, multilated cows, and the bewildered residents of trailer homes in the mid western US that comes with UFO-dom, though perhaps not complete hallucination and having some basis in reality in certain cases, are not indicative of visitations by a race of aliens routinly visiting Earth and its denizens (for some, as yet, unclear purpose). Therefore your Martian Uncle is not being entirely truthful with you, and I suggest you give him a piece of your mind.

Dear Dr Galbally

Thanks again for this information.

I must admit you are a resevoir of information and I would like to borrow you sometime to plague you with lots of mind boggling questions. If you can ever make arrangements to a 48 hour meeting where I use your brain I would be very grateful. I will of course provide wine and pizza and bring a suitable female typist to dictate this. We can discuss fees on the book rights at a later date ;)

Anyways just kidding but you really can answer a question, I just can't seem to read fast enough to answer all the ones that keep cropping up in my mind. Thanks for your input.

Thank you, I try to be of service, I feel that having to put up with me for 48 hours would be difficult for anyone, even someone as gracious as you, as I find it hard enough to put up with myself at times, but an interesting idea none the less.

I have actually dissected several small mammals (all very humane) if people have ethical objections to this, I accept them, but do not agree. However, I have never dissected a human body, it would be an interesting experience I am sure. I did attend a lecture by several very famous forensic scientists working on widely-known cases. It was grisly, but fascinating.

I think that given the situation of meeting a (possibly) intelligent life form from a different planetary system, asking them if they would like a cup of tea is no more bizarre than asking them anything else, such as sexual preferences, political beliefs, personal knowledge of Jesus Christ etc etc. I would personally ask them whether the principal of relativity as explained by einsteins equation must hold valid for all circumstances, and also if it possible to determine the velocity and position of a electron by any means at a given moment of time, if they answered either question I would be impressed indeed. Then I would ask them what team they followed, and beat the living crap out of them if they give the wrong answer.

That phrase represents a failure of the English language, but essentially, yes, it is a bit worrying. Thankfully I am not a medical doctor, though I am considering my pHD.

What would you take for your major for your PhD?

My primary interest would be to do a taught pHD on the philosophy and history of science, but I would do a reseach pHD as a research chemist if a good piece of work that I might be some good at came up, just daydreaming now, but I would love to do something involving stellar spectroscopy, but alas such pHDs are not very common in Ireland. If only M.I.T. would have me.

What about you CG, you are a pHD aren't you? Was it classics, I can't remember now. I was just reading one of the "Ethics" by Aristotle, can't remember which one off hand, solid gold that man was.

Mine is in History, History of Native Americans, Ancient History as a minor field, emphasis on Greece and Rome.

You never know if MIT or Cal Tech would want you-I love Cal Tech myself, did a lot of science teacher lesson plans with them. You can apply anywhere you want to, but you would have to move away while in school. I was just lucky to move where most of my research continues. For you, you would have to move closer to the stars-if that is your field of choice.

I'm teaching a class on History of Science this spring, I am really excited about it-I love all the famous ones, and enjoyed those history of science classes when I took them a decade ago.

You know when you play a Black Sabbath record backwards, you sometimes get satanic messages?

Apparently so, it has even been rumoured that his dog turns up alive again.

Dear Galbally

My mom lives in her own apartment in a warden controlled complex for old 'uns.

The woman who lives across the corridor from my mom has stuck a handwritten note over her doorbell. It says "RING LOUD"

How exactly would I do that?

Hmmmn, tricky,

I have just bought a recent book by Rodger Penrose on the laws of the Universe, perhaps there is something in there that will provide us with some guidance. Be patient, I shall reply, as I always do. Thank you Mr Kram.
