Greek life good or bad?
Hey. So I'm considering going greek. I've heard a lot of good and bad about it. I read any intersting debate here: Frats good or bad?
But I can't seem to really get my finger on why I'm weary of joining a frat. Everyone says they are so good, great friendships etc. Any thoughts?

*rats*
I thought it was about ancient Greece, one of my favorite topics.
I have no input on this, I never joined one in college, but I bet others will offer some input.

I have never experienced a frat. What exactly is meant by the term 'going greek'?

I dunno but, at a pledge party where my brother was a senior member, he got tossed and broke his clavicle. The brute was a pledge, decided he had a great idea and picked him up and threw him down. Needless to say, that guy was banned. My brother probably deserved it though, he can be pushy. This wasn't a party frat either, it was a business frat.

In England, going Greek means going to a Greek restaurant. Fortunately, I already know what a frat is. As for 'tossed', I just don't want to go there.

I can't explain what going Greek means in Holland without incurring the wrath of the mods. Suffice to say that the term is well known in the red light district of Amsterdam. The working girls usually have a sign up in the window to tell customers whether this form of sex is an option.

There is nothing wrong with frats (Fraternal Organizations). It's a great social outlet, a way to make new and long lasting friendships. Some of the negative things that we read about frats have more to do with the actions of certain individuals within the fraternity than any code of conduct espoused by the frat.

Do tell me more. Although I've been to Amsterdam, I've never been to the Red Light District (my interests were otherwise fulfilled). What does this term mean, 'going Greek'?

I detect an attempt to get rid of me. Do they suspend members here, put them on pre-mod or just ban them for life?

Hope I haven't offended you, Ruth. Sorry, if I have. Absolutely no offense intended. I for one would not like to see you go, barred or otherwise. Please feel free to rip the vital essentials out of me, just don't leave on my account.

Most of the Fraternities and Sororities in the US have Greek disignations like Alpha Kappa Psi, Gamma Phi Beta, etc. Our original poster has been asked to join a fraternity at whatever University or College he attends. Therefore, going Greek, would be to join a fraternity.

What a strange thread? Again shows how different the English language is from one side of the atlantic to the other.

A word I have noticed in particular, recently, is 'furore'. This is the one word I have noticed, lately, with the most significant difference, not only in spelling, but also in pronunciation.
In the UK, the word is spelt 'furore' and the 'e' at the end of the word is accentuated, [few-or-ay].
In the USA, the word is spelt 'furor' and is pronounced as it is seen [without the -ay].

It means the same thing, though, doesn't it?
The furor of the howling wind.....................furore..............oh, that would be something to use in poetry, I never saw it spelt like that before.

I always thought fraternities and sororities were for "those football and cheerleader" types. I have since changed my mind. Go for it..........as people have said they CAN be a great social segue into college life.

They can also be a stereotypical in the way that everyone is expected to conform to the rules of the frat.

Wow this thread is really blowing up. But, nobody is really addressing the key questions? What about the deaths? Parties? Are these acceptable? Would these be reduced be getting rid of Fraternities?

It has never been a part of my nature to ever take anyone less than seriously, to ever give them less than my heart can give, to ever give them less than I believe is the truth, or to allow them to sit in my chair. The latter is my hidden pleasure, particularly if the sitter also finds pleasure in my chair. Such is my perspective. I demand nothing except acceptance that I exist as a friend.

Lon, you are quite perceptive. This is the point of most clubs formed by the young insofar as they emulate adulthood.
God bless them as far as they do not lose their focus.

Don't blame the frats or sororities for the publizised deaths, parties etc. Look at the deaths from some of the college BINGE DRINKING episodes which were not connected to fraternity activities. It's individuals that are to blame for misdeeds not the organizations to which they belong. The organization itself does not espouse harmful or illegal activity. If we are to blame fraternities for the misdeeds of individuals and shut them down as some have proposed, then let's shut down the Universities as well since they house and abet the misdeeds of it's students and faculty.

Heres a cryptic clue to understanding the term Going Greek.. If your old enough to remember. Think of Marlon Brando in a movie called the Last Tango in Paris. The film introduced Americans to a new route for pleasure many years ago.
As for frats.. I was in a sorority in High School They were very popular in the place I grew up. Alpha Sigma Gamma. At the time, I was very pleased to be accepted. Belonging to a group and having " Sorority Sisters was great. It was also instan t
social life. Your popularity was determined by which sorority you were in. And there was one for every group. They really were sort of divided by factors such as religion, looks, brains, etc...... As i matured and evolved into my hippy stage, becoming more opened minded and had more self confidence.. I resigned. I began to feel it was a hindrance to exploring the possibilities of friendships, outside my group. But that was a long time ago......
