link--California execution delayed as doctors walk out.....another death penalty challenge/controversy. initially, anesthesiologists were slated to sedate a prisoner before his execution by lethal injection today, which was unusual in itself. the doctors have decided it violates their hippocratic oath, and have declined to participate. so now the execution may go forward tonight, but using a barbituate overdose instead of the usual chemicals. i thought this was noteworthy since it will undoubtedly precipitate further precedents and appeals against the penalty.
execution tonight?
I thought the first drug was supposed to sedate them so they didn't feel anything.

In a way, the doctors are correct. It is against their Oath. They should opt for another form of execution then.
execution tonight?
the legal claim by the last couple inmates executed was that the introduction of the three chemicals would be painful, therefore cruel and unusual. the doctors were supposed to completely anesthetize him.

When I read the subject title I started hearing the West Side Story song.
We'll have an execution tonight
The bad guy's gonna die tonight
He's used up his appeals
Tonight it goes for real
Nobody will stop it tonight.

I heard about this on the radio today. What is with all of the last minute appeals anyway? This must be a trend now. Like Hollywood's baby boom!

Raven is right.. while the blood and gore media fixates on the
"rights" of the convicted they and everyone else seem to forget about
the victim(s) of these killers.. I hardly think they stopped to think about
sparing their victims any fear, terror, pain etc when they do what they do.
Off with their heads... sometimes the old ways are the best

Probably like the politicans and judges they elected to protect them as
honest law abiding citiznes just did to them what was done to their daugther
by the scumbag...
Cruel and unusual... giving him a dose of feel good juice so he has no fear or pain like what he inflicted on someone's KID.
If being kidnapped, tortured, beat, raped, stranged and then stabbed in the heart repeated times so you finally die is SO MUCH FUN.. how come there are not hundreds or thousands out there in lines pushing and shoving yelling Me, me next, me me....
John Wayne Gacy tortured, raped and killed the younger brother of a girl I grew up with and a personal male friend of mine... I saw firsthand what their families went through for years and years and no one in the media or the Save the Predators Groups gave a hoot about them or their dead sons.. but they sure were there year after year championing Gacy's cause and "his rights"...
I have absolutely no compassion for this murdering predator or any of the rest of them... they made their beds now let them die and lie in them as they should.

hi Xxena...it's nice to see you again!
....now the taxpayers of CA will support the scumbag a couple more years at least. i knew when i started this thread that it meant more landmark challenges to come. by the way, there are NO questions pertaining to his guilt. i don't mind legitimate challenges, that's why the states went to lethal injection. ok. but do the citizens want the death penalty or not? in CA they do. and the citizens are thwarted.

Taking a life should never be done without first making sure that the facts
justify it when it comes to sentencing those committing heinous crimes, BUT,
when the facts leave NO doubt in anyone's mind, espeically in cases where
not only is the evidence screaming for justice with the body(s) but the
perp brags about their little folly in the confession - then the families and the taxpayers should be spared the time and costs of all these years of BS !
I understand the need to be humane hence "lethal injection", but there are times that I do question both the need to "seem humane" and also the drawn out appeal process since it sends the wrong messages to others vent on human predation since the vast majority of these offenders relish the fear, pain and torture they inflict on their victims and that is what they crave. That being said i do not see why their punishment should not adaquately FIT THE CRIME.
There are other countries on this planet whose culture/religious beliefs right now is big discussion here and elsewhere including mainstrean TV and other media venues. Although we in the western world see them as bizaar, outlandish
and even barbaric when it comes to things we would not consider a 'crime" in as far as the punishemen that is handed down to offenders - none of which is
fatal between the parties involved at the time it happens (ie., adulty etc). But
in those lands, those cultures when a man does to any female what this piece of crap did to that young woman.. their society does NOT tolerate it and punishment is swift and it fits the crime. The end result... the percent of crimes
like we see here in the form of kidnapping, torture, rape and then murder to cover it are far and few between compared to the western countries of the world.
Our benevolence is hardly doing justice for anyone, much less sending out a clear message that antisocial behavior will not be tolerated and handled swiftly and
efficiently against those that commit horrid crimes against others !
What can we expect when we have a society that is addicted to a multitude of media feeding them a daily dose hour after hour in so many forms of outlandish violence against others as a form of pleasure and recreation with no consequences other than changing a channel, a DVD a game disk etc. I've talked to kids that think such fantasy is reality and no one really dies in the end .. its all just rough play. We have a generation of budding psychopaths on our hands and that comment i've head over and over from people I know in both law enforcement, legal circles and medical groups.
Watching alien monsters wreak havoc and eat people , then being blown up with space age pretend weapons is fantasy... watching ultra violent things made to mimic real life and romanticizing and gloryfying them is just plain sick !

Don't know anything about this case but the US does seem to hasve an attitude that if you are accused you must therefore be guilty.

Vindictive and unwilling to admit they got it wrong is the kindest comments you see. Prosecutors seem unable to acceopt they might have got it wrong.

It's a moot point whether the death penalty is much of a deterrent anywa, personally I think spending the rest of your life looking st four walls seems a lot worse, but where you have a culture that seems to delight in people getting their dues you need to be very sure of your court system and don't make mistakes.

Yes agreed, and I really think the TV and print media are the real blame in
all of this - their obsessive rush to GET THE STORY at all costs no matter
who is trampled in the stampede, including people's rights is all that seems to count to them. And like the prosecuters you note, when they are blatantly
WRONG you are hard pressed to find the retraction publically much less a
public apology. People's lives are often ruined by their rush for the top story and some of the false information they vomit as "the truth and nothing but..."
I do not know about the UK overall or specifially Scotland.. but here the joke, and its really NO JOKING MATTER either, is the Credo of the Media is " if it bleeds it leads" and there is so much truth to that comment its pathetic.
Often Iwill go back and forth between network news TV and the cable/satellite channels..its unbelievalbe the hype and sometimes utter mistruth they spew out for the country and world to hear and all too many people take it as "the truth" even though there is no basis for it and the media more times than not is doing nothing more than 'speculating" to make their story jucier and get more RATINGS...
and that sums it up in a nutshell RATINGS... the higher they are, the more advertisers they get , more advertisers more $$ coming in and a higher profit margin for everyone involved. We are fools to think that the top brass of all the media outfits and most of the reporteres give a rat's bum about any human involved... its all for the "top story and ratings"...
Just like the execution story.. they don't care if the guy fries or not.. but as long
as its controversial and its got some kind of blood and gore and misery involved.. they will cover it adneaseum which feeds the special interest groups on both sides and that keeps the whole thing spinning like a non stop wheel.
Saddest part is that by the time the dust dies down and the story becomes the
bottom of the birdcage.. the bad guys have been elevated to celebrity victim status and the real victim(s) and horror of the real crime has long since been forgotten and the surviving family and friends are left with no justice, no closure and a lot of pain to work through.
Its sheer irony that this particular case should be in California since it seems that
everything from one side of this country to the other has been "hollywoodized"
in one form or another and there is nothing sacred any longer .. everything is some type of sick voyeuristic type of entertainment for the masses at the expense of real people living out real life horrors.

Delayed execution is painful, victims say
While lawyers, doctors and a federal judge in California have focused on whether lethal injection might cause a killer pain, those who remember 17-year-old Terri Winchell said they are thinking about the pain she must have felt -- and the anguish they still feel. "The victims are going through more pain than the murderer," said her mother, Barbara Christian.

It's not meant to be a deterrent. It's meant as a punishment.
It's evolved from the kind of wild western lynch'em justice. Britain lets their killers out in 12 years. Thats a typical 'life' sentence. The US has an 'eye for an eye' attitude based on biblical principles. Not so long ago, brits were throwing rotten fruit and veg at public hangings from Tyburn. The european courts of human rights have got it all wrong. They ignore the rights of the victims who have had their basic human right of life taken from them violently and without recourse. Here, it's the criminals who have all the rights.
On the other hand, I would rather do time in the US than HERE! The prisons are absolutely AWFUL!! LOL! I've seen the tours of them! They look more like dungeons! So I kind of understand your point. But you must understand. The US prisons are RESORTS compared to what you guys have here!

Removing the religion part of it I don't see anything wrong in an "eye for an eye"
when it comes to heinous crimes, since punishment hardly covers the cold blooded torture and murder of someone that never did anything to you. It is a deterrent in the sense if sentences were carried out swiftly and routinely then others might think twice about commiting like crimes if they knew they would pay the ultimate price for their follies. As for prisons, they might be better here but they are far from a trip to Disneyworld except for the white collar federal prisons. Here most are just as dangerous inside as outside, often more so since they are ruled not by the government and LE but by the hordes of gangs and their members inside.
I have a very hard time with the concept of taking another's life for the sheer pleasure of it or the aftermath of some deviate sexual assault on someone. Doing so in a last ditch self defense measure is one thing although I would think most sane/moral people would even be bothered by that to a degree. But those that can just kill and walk away from it like its no big deal.. that just boggles the mind.

How long for RAmierz, who knows - given the track record of touchy feely
ultra liberal California.. could be forever - as long as the taxpayers are
paying for "it".. and I refer to him as an "it" since he shows no human qualities as far as compasion, conscience or personal responsibility.
