The Immaculate Assumption

All domains of knowledge rest upon some form of assumptions. Philosophy, it appears to claim, thinks it does not do so but that is for another discussion.

Our first conscious contact with assumptions probably occurred when we took Geometry and started with axioms such as Ã¢â‚¬Å“a straight line is the shortest distance between two pointsÃ¢â‚¬.

The natural sciences assume the world is knowable, quantifiable, measurable, etc. Theology assumes the existence of a caring God and the reliability of the written word. Every domain of knowledge is limited by its assumptions. The assumptions distort and limit the world of enquiry for that domain of knowledge.

Our intellectual worldview is filled with assumptions. I think that one task of intellectual maturity is examining our closely held assumptions, which in many cases are carried over from our childhood. Track down your ideologies and examine the assumptions upon which they rest would be a good way to overcome a boring Sunday afternoon.

What assumption does one make in the name of patriotism? I am inclined to say that patriotism is Ã¢â‚¬Ëœlove of countryÃ¢â‚¬â„¢. I must assume that my nation deserves my love. I must assume that love can be a rationally induced emotion. I assume I my not know what I am talking about here.

this is not nesisarily a bad thing so long as the assumption can be tested.

in maths an assumption must be proved to be true before it becomes fact, assuming that n=k we must test this assumption to show that n=(k+) before we can prove our assumption to be correct, a contradiction to which disprooves the assumption.

the only problem with assumptions lies wherein the assumption cannot or is not tested. then its a theory and nothing more.

yeah i know i know.

i just felt like ranting,

but on that note are you saying that part of 'growing up' is challenging or prooving the assumptions made in an earlier age.

would this be what defines an adult to you?

you can aquire knowlege through assumptions, its just harder because you have to prove them first.

mountains......... no grains of sand............. no 2 faces.....

I will also assume this is not a accident..............there are powers we can not see that are in charge...........and make sure there are NEVER 2 things the same...

i don't envy the person who tries to prove that no 2 grains of sand are the same.

this is one case where we have an excelent assumption.
