Burn - BABY - Burn
Ok ....... we have had 1/2 inch of rain or snow in 6 months. 5 neighbors go together to burn the dry crap off our property. We had 2hoses filled with water and 3 people with rakes for a controlled burn. MAJOR BUMMER......The fire dept said we should not burn because there has been no snow or rain for 6 months...................DUH................that's why we were burning.

I suppose they're worried that it could easily get out of control NV, and cause a major conflagration and widespread fires, with the added danger to lives and property.
They might go for a 'controlled' burn if you dug large (deep and wide) ditches around the whole area to be burned... and had fire hoses on standby.
Would it be possible to gather the local community together and clear by hand?
I know it would take ages but at least theres less possibility of starting a fire.
So long as no one clearing is smoking.

So why does it have to be burned? Why can't it just be left? Forgive me, I'm not too well versed on taking care of land!!

If we do not do some kind of controlled burning then it can get out of control if someone throws a cigarette out the window when we aren't home or lightening strikes (not likely in our ever continuing drought). Burning also allows new growth..........if we ever get any rain (none in 6 months). The no rain in 6 months is why we cannot burn.
And Chonsi.......we can't do a dang thing right now except water the xerioscape we currently have. We ordered a ton of new drought resistant plants that will be over-run by the thistle grass (nasty stuff) and the THOUSANDS of bullheads we have from last year - even nastier stuff.
I fully understand the fire departments concern BUT what cracked me up was the big fire truck and the 2 little ones parked in our front yard with 10 firemen standing around talking. They never thought it was out of control or they would have had their water hoses out putting out the controlled fire..........

nVALLEYVEE- You have my sympathy as it must be very frustrating to want to clean up your place and the local Yocals won't let you. I realize NM has had a lot of wild fires and I'm afraid I would be the cause of one of those. We live in Illinois and have not had any more rain than you in NM. One snow 2" and melted by noon. We don't get much moisture from snow. We start planting our fields in the end of Mar or first of Apr. We are afraid this is going to be a disastrous year. Today is the last day of Feb. and is suppose to be 70 degrees out there. The weather all over the world has been freaky this year and last. When your lively hood depends on the weather you start being stressed big time. Good Luck with your plantings. It will take a lot of water to keep them going. :-5
