Meth is big problem in our area. You can point out the users, espicially the long term ones. The stuff ages you horribly. Your teeth rot out, you lose weight, skin sags off your bones. It's ugly.

tis a slow poisoning of ones self, and the high is short lived hence how quickly folks become addicted, the users are putting into their bodies such things as Lithium and anti freeze as an example. I know for a fact that for the lithium use.... they are stripping lithium batteries to use to "cook" this stuff. Our company here sits on a hotbed of Lithium and we have to take our shipments and immediately remove them from our bay entrance and lock them up so no one can come in and steal our cells.

Ammonia is used in the meth labs in our area. So is ethanol. We had to watch for suspicious cars at our tanks. That's how alot of the labs have gotten busted in our area.

Kids will try drugs such as these primarily through peer pressure. In a group of like-minded individuals, the 'high' is intensified. The effect is to offer an apparently better world to live in. The perspective changes. Problems 'disappear'. As Minks says, it doesn't last long. Then, to stave off the pain of withdrawal, more of the drug is taken. It becomes a vicious cycle with the periods in between the highs being the worst lows for the indiviuals. Consequently, the drug eventually poisons the body and the mind.

My younger son got involved with this crap a couple of years ago. I was in total denial wanting to believe that his worst problem was smoking pot. I didnt want him doing that either. Hes living with me now. Some days hes horrible. I think hes clean, as he just passed a drug test for a new job last week. But his outlook on life is miserable. He is nasty, negative, hateful and rude. I dont know why. Why do I stick by him? Because this afternoon he said" Mom. that jasmine plant in the living room smells great. At that moment, I get a flash of the little boy, who used to come home and tell me where he had found hydrangea blooms.. for us to sneak out at night and cut. I dont have an answer for this. I can only say that some people handle lifes hurts and dissapointments.. others cant. And they turn to substances to medicate themselves. Watch your children carefully. ( I know you do) dont let stress or work obligations force you into denial... about changes in their behavior, or problems you feel they are having difficulty with.I felt that I was 100% involved with my children.. but being a single mom forced me to work a lot. Your so tired and so stressed.. you just dont see what is happening.Would I have done anything differently? Probably not. But I never expected this.

So you used this stuff and didn't come out looking like some of these junkies. I'm assuming you realize that you got lucky, and that's not the norm for meth abusers....
Because this almost sounds like condoning meth use.

Look... Many of us are products of the 70s. We, or our friends did quite a bit of drug experimentation back then. And went on to have responsible, normal lives. Its the same thing with booze. Ive had my hey day with that stuff too. Drinking yourself into oblivion... shooting pool.. leaving on a motorcycle. It is by the grace of God that Im here today. I dont look like a burned out middle aged hag. But the reason I described my sons outlook on life... is because the personality that lets themselves go to the dogs like this... seem to have character traits shared by all the users who get themselves in that shape. Since Im hanging my underwear out here lately.... Did I mention one night stands? Very popular, and acceptable behavior in the 70s also. ( The good ole days) By the way.. I rarely have seen anything written here that would be unfit for kids to read. Except recently by the foul mouthed character who was recently banned. Quite the contrary..... The stuff written here is like life journals. They should read it. Its literary genius compared to the horiffic, disrespectful.violent, hateful music they are bombarded with on a daily basis.

There but for the grace o' God, huh? **
This shows how useless the war on drugs is. It just makes drug use more titillating.
The best we can do is raise our kids right. Do our best to teach them how to act right, despite the fact that we didn't when we were their age. Plus maybe instill the fear that we'll kill them faster than any drug if we catch them using. :yh_angry
**added: Re-reading this post, it sounds sarcastic. It wasn't meant that way.

You know.. sometimes its just impossible to paint the picture you are trying to with words. Or you get complacent thinking that readers can climb into your head and understand you. The fact that a good portion of Americas youth smoked pot and did drugs during the seventies is not titallating, its quite frightening. It was the beginning of a disease called hoplessness, and fear for tomorrow that began to eat young people up. The remark about one night stands was a sarcastic referal to what we have today. Aids and an assortment of other deadly venereal diseases. Despite all the ugly portraits of drug users. Threatening to kill kids wont stop them from using drugs if they are so inclined. Even kids who come from very strong family structures experience a time when they are more influenced by their peers, than their families. The world is a very tough place. It seems that there is a huge percentage of youth who just cannott live up to the challenges. And so, rather than even try... again, they hide by medicating themselves.

I understood it exactly as you explained it. I apparently was not as clear. I meant that we just have to do our best with the kids we're in contact with, so that they'll make the right decision when we're not there with them.

I just cant imagine why you would put this into your body when you know what's in it. Im not that far out of high school (11 years) but I remember that cocaine was the big deal then, and I tried it. I didnt like feeling "outside" of my body. But I think comparing meth to cocaine and marijuana, well, meth is a whole different ballgame IMO.
I think what worked for me was having mom pull out all these household chemicals on the table and saying, "Would you drink this?", while holding up iodine, or "would you munch on this", holding up ajax. It really puts thing into perspective when you sit someone down and really start to explain it.
And the pictures speak a thousand words.

The drugs of the 70s are very different to the drugs that are available today. The main difference is that they are more potent and if used constantly become lethal.
Cannabis, for instance, which I have used for most of my life, used to be a relatively harmless recreation. Now, however, it is 20 times more potent and is grown and treated differently. The stuff that is available now is not the same as the stuff that was available three decades ago.
Furthermore, kids as young as 11 years old are getting hold of it. Research has proved that up to the age of maturity of the brain, the brain will be physically altered by use of this particular drug.
Life also appears to look different to kids these days. For instance, when I started my apprenticeship, I was very eager to learn. But the majority of the kids I see nowadays doing their apprenticeships haven't got an ounce of interest in the work or learning other than acquiring a ticket.
The world of work has always been a far cry from the world of school and the transition can be a shock for those kids who have not been prepared for it. And, let's face it, they are kids and all they want to do at this stage in their lives is to enjoy it. Unfortunately, for many, drug use is the only way for them. And that's another story altogether.

A lot of those chemicals go into cigarettes. 4,000 chemicals in all. I am not certain why the complete composition of a cigarette is not given out along with the nicotine and tar content.

I had a discussion with Jr Minks again about Meth yesterday. She had some interesting points as a 15 year old. She told me drugs today are what they are because of the push to stop them, so because prices are high and fines and jail time is huge druggies look for other easy fix kind of drugs and presto along comes Meth. She said addicts no longer take drugs for the fun high, no they take it to feel normal, meaning if they don't have the drug they don't feel right, or feel awful so have to keep using the drug... hence addiction. She told me things like
Meth-heads see demons,
Meth-heads have sores that never heal
She knows of one guy at school who is a Meth-head, and she thinks it is horrible as well as sad
She would personally kick anyones ass for trying Meth.
You know what made her aware of all this...... no anything she learned in school......
She read about this in the book "A Million Little Pieces" yeah so anyone who thinks that book is just a piece of contrived junk and not fit for younger folk might want to think again.
Oprah did a huge favor drawing attention to the book
Sad thing is meth may never go away due to the fact the ingredients are out there so readily available.
