Rico Daniels (the Mad Max of furniture design) has a programme on one of the satellite channels....it's a bit 'over the top' but he has great ideas.....

I used to know a guy that created art with a scroll saw and different kinds of wood. He used the wood for color and didn't paint anything. I found this on the web. It's the type of thing he would do, except he did eagles & stuff.

I've never seen one of those before. So it's like a very fine bandsaw - that's a great tool. I guess it must be more like a file than a saw and presumably, you're cutting or shaping sheets of wood rather than blocks

My room was a horrible pink (sorry ladies) when I moved in. I didn't have a headboard so just drew one up and made it out of stageset scraps and some odds and sods lying around in my shed. I didn't like the cupboard in the corner so I put a poofy alcove in. Hey, you ladies like a guy in touch with his feminine side dont you?......C'mon, help me out here......I need reassurance

The little room is where you'd be staying if you visited. The backroom is the hub of activity at Krammy HQ and where I stroll in the Garden

No It has a really small saw blade. It nice cause you can move the wood around easily to cut curves and such.

Mine is used mainly to cut silver.

Thanks for the kind words folks, it's nice to get some feedback. When I see friends and family, it's rarely over here so quite a few of them have never seen the house, but they'd just be polite anyway. My labours have just been for me and my daughter really, but surprisingly, the work did get a thumbs-up from my hyper-critical ex.

One thing I learned fairly recently is that pretty much all types of wood go together. I had always avoided this like the plague, but the after pic of the front room shows pine, beech, mahogany, oak and walnut all in harmony.

For over a year , I have wrestled with the idea of painting the pine cladding white as per the back room but I just can't make my mind up. Of course if I do there's no turning back. Should I leave it as it is?

These pix show a fireplace that I made in the front room of my 3rd house and a unit I made for the kitchen. In hindsight, I think it would have looked better with different tiles, but it looked ok in-situ.

I always have the same colours throughout the house. In that one, everywhere was dark green and apple-white

I see what you mean now. I do tend to salvage wood. The decks on the stagesets we build are top quality 18mm (just under 3/4") Birch ply and I keep an eye open for decent offcuts. One set we did once for someone recently found slumped in his car had 1" ply. You should have tried picking a sheet of that up!!. Nearly did myself a mischief carrying the offcuts home haha.

I never throw any wood over 12" long away. The top of the fireplace is an upside down skirting board with a plywood offcut on top, edged with a bit of left-over door architrave. I did go out and buy the rope edging to attach to that though. But I don't think you can see that in the pic as it didn't scan very well

And now for something completely different. I've been involved in many stagesets over the years but I just found this old pic and it reminded me what a good laugh we had making this happen. This is one of U2's Trabants on the Zoo TV tour. After removing the engines and anything else heavy, we all piled in for a laugh. You've no idea how small these East German cars were. Each one was painted differently and my favourite was just covered in text. I actually got to drive the one that kept its guts. It was the one that was covered in mirror tiles that Winona Ryder chauffered the band to an award ceremony in. The oddest vehicle I've ever driven.

In my defence, this was when my daughter was 50 days old and she's 14 in a couple of weeks, so at the time, you probably looked stupid too. First set I ever worked on was for these guys to push Pyromania. This stuff was for Adrenalize

This is the job that kept me very busy over the last few months. Me and 2 other guys detailed the set which took about 5 weeks (plus I did 100 hours overtime).

I detailed the arch on my own which was about 3 weeks (plus 50 hours extra).

Wouldn't say I "enjoyed" it, or the show, but I was fairly chuffed. Unfortunately, this only lasted a couple of minutes.

By the way, the arch is 74m across the base !!!!!!

WOW! Do you think any of the concert goers appreciate how much time and effort goes into those sets?

Do the bands/artists have any input?

I also make earrings and only earrings. If someone liked a pair I was wearing, stranger or not, I would take them right off my ears and give them away. I've given away 100s of them, although my hubby would have been happier if I made a little $$ from them.

I just liked the smile I'd put on someone's face. It was so worth it.

I doubt that they appreciate it. When I go to gigs I study the set, structures, lighting trusses etc, but if the paying punters are doing that, there's something wrong with the performer.

Some artists have zero input, where others like with the set we've just started on, are for an artist who is very hands on

Well it was a long time ago JB but I think I gave it 3 coats of eggshell varnish with the appropriate sanding inbetween. More recently a friend of mine did something similar and waxed the wood. I thought at the time that maybe I should have done that. Still, it looked ok.

I am not artistic that way, although I used to crochet and knit all the fancy dresses when my daughters were little. I guess I will again one day, when they marry and I have grandchildren.

My daughter is the artist of the family.
