Councillors, mayors,charity workers, memberes of the armed forces and their families are among those invited to (Royal Kneesup) garden parties on the lawns of Buckingham Palace every summer for their work.
More than 8,000 people attend each of the summer gatherings on the neatly-cut lawns of the Palace. The Royal finances published yesterday showed that in 2004-2005, the cost of staging garden parties came to £500,000 including staff food and tents.
Tickets for the events are seen by minor council officials as one of the privileged perks of the job, offering the chance to meet the Queen and other members of the Royal Family (wink wink) as the bands play, and the guests tour the gardens.
