Lennon's Beatle lyrics fail to sell John Lennon's hand-written lyrics for the Beatles classic A Day In The Life have failed to sell, an auction house said.

Regarded as one of the most valuable musical manuscripts composed in the 20th century to go under the hammer, they had been expected to fetch £1.5 million.

But the offers made in the sealed-bid auction failed to meet the reserve for the double-sided sheet.

The lyrics, written 39 years ago, were part of the estate of Beatles road manager Mal Evans.

It was sold at auction in 1992, when it was acquired by a private collector.

A spokesman for Bonhams in San Francisco said: "It's a reality in our business but we're certainly disappointed.

"We wish we were jumping on the rooftops yelling about the sales prices.
