Keepsakes and Treasures

Post by AussiePam »

What's in the dark recesses of YOUR filing cabinet???

This afternoon I was cleaning out some old files right at the back and came across one labelled Keepsakes and Treasures!! It contains a whole lot of bits of my past - including- in no particular order:

. My son's "punk curl" - he was relieved when I released him from it.

. an aussie one dollar note (no such thing any more)

. an ancient travel brochure for Eastern Europe

. A program for a concert at Grieg's house in Bergen

. my school prefect's badge (set a thief to catch a thief - they must have been thinking)

. A Snoopy cartoon - Linus says "Aunt Marion was right.. never marry a musician and never answer the door"

. A press cutting concerning Munck's painting 'The Scream'

. The program for the first concert given by a little orchestra I played flute with

. Some notes on brew pub beer varieties

. A sepia picture of my Dad in military uniform

. A love letter

. This poem - clipped from the local newspaper

Survivor

'It is time the stone made an effort to flower'. - Paul Celan

But it was always too late

for what had grown used to lifelessness

to outburst its borders.

More than anything else a stone

is self-contained, gradually worn down

by trivial play of wind

fruitless rain.

It is neither blistered

nor wounded nor amazed.

Seasons breathe and die before it.

It has no vanity in the pretty

dance of shadow and light.

Why draw on ancient energies

to rise up as silken fragrance

unperennial as memory

to be dispersed

with all of mortality's failures?

It needs no friends, admirers, lovers.

With its small cold face

it brazens out eternity's glare

better than most.

What lovely treasures to find Pam.

Any chance you could copy and paste the Snoopy cartoon (Snoopy fan here) ;)

And then over a cup of tea you can tell me all about the love letter! ;) :-4

That's really lovely Pam, must bring back such good memories for you. I don't think I have any old treasures anywhere of my youth, apart from my baby book which keeps most of the details of my birth and first few months in there. Even has my very first strand of hair in there, cute huh! :)

I have a basket in which I have kept all the greetings cards i had when I married. 21st birthday cards and all the cards i got when my kids were born. Also the tiny little ID bracelets that the kids had on their wrists in as 'new borns' hospital + other cards from significant events like christenings etc.

I did have a few Valentine cards.....but tore them up a few years ago :D

I also have an allbum that contains birth certificate, death certificates from relatives on my Mums side of the family and my Dads indentures for his apprenticeship as a carpenter and cabinet maker in 1924...he was 14. Unfortunately there is also a piece of paper that releases him from the appenticeship because the frim went bust during the depression. He was sponsored from the 'Poor boys fund' of the local town council...it is a great insight into the social history of the time.

There's quite a lot of 'bits and bobs' collected over the years that have historical value for the family but they are boxed or filed so as not to take up much space.

I'm like Minks, alot is scattered through out the house. But I do have my hope chest which contains a baby blanket my grandmother crocheted for me before she passed away. It also has my veil, garter, and bouquet from my wedding. Then there's a shoebox in the bottom that has old love letters, pictures friends drew for me, greeting cards, old locker signs, award certificates, and all my other memorable stuff from school.

Interesting...

I recently went thru my "box" up in the closet... I threw 80% of it away...

Some things seem important and like they'll be special forever... and then one day... they just arent. I do that every 5 years or so, or else I'd need a whole closet instead of just a box. What I kept (that I can recall off the top of my head) -

~A few special "I love you Mom" notes from the boys

~2 things my ex made for me... even though they make me puke... my sons will want them.

~some baby teeth

~a letter from my Grandmother

~one or two old love letters that had the ability to make me smile instead of cry or puke ;)

~and my old poems and stories (shhhhhhhhhh, nobody knows.... shhhh)

This is me too! I can't bear to throw things away!

There was a news story recently about an elderly couple who stored so much junk everywhere that the pile was 4 feet off the ground in places. They used to walk over mounds of junk. Then one day the old girl slipped and fell and suffocated in the junk and it took them 3 days to find her!!!!! :wah:

Funny, but not funny really. Anyway, I thought...one day thats gonna be me! I just hoard everything and one day its all gonna explode out of its boxes and just flood through my house like a landslide.............. and there they'll find me........... a week later........... with old bits of christmas wrapping paper shoved up my nose ......:wah:

So I'm gonna Ebay piles of it!

Anyone want some old Christmas wrapping paper, going cheap?

I understand... when I first moved into a new house with a fireplace after being separated a while... I unpacked my "stuff" in front of the fire... threw in most of the promises of forever he ever gave me... felt great... very cathartic... I don't regret it.

I don't throw away things that the kids might want...

mostly this time it was old love letters from boyfriends... ya know the ones... I'll love you forever, never leave you... blah blah blah... *puke

Grin. You Guys are THE BEST !!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I think keeping baby teeth trumps my lock of hair. And Paratrooper wings trumps most stuff, maybe not Snooze's nude pics.. As I limp through life I try to disgard any of the really incriminating keepsakes that I don't want my er kids to find when I finally ski into a crevasse or get strangled in a fit of unbridled passion by some bloke I done wrong. As fer cute, I think both BR and LC are just the most adorable, cuddly little bunnykinses. And it breaks my heart to see them poking out their tongues at each other, like narsty common street urchins. Rapunzel - here's the cartoon.

Oh my girls picked the ones they wanted before they were delivered to the ex. I took all the pics out of the photo albums that had him in them and allowed the girls to make the choices as well and the rest went to him, as for the pics without him MINE all MINE.

The ex may have kept the pics for the girls not knowing the picked already so they may want to view those later in life.

I'm a fan of Cows with Guns, BR.. As fer cute little adorable bunnykinses - if I withdraw my totally uncalled for and immensely hurtful and reprehensible description and just grovel a wee bit at your biker boot black leather feet ... can I go and get on my combat gear and help you polish up a few of those awesome looking semiautos. Then we can go and larn some manners to the little wussie Pommie shielas who've been trying to kidnap TLW.

Without the flash animation it loses an awful lot BR, but here's the lyrics anyway..

Cows with Guns -

Dana Lyons

Fat and docile, big and dumb,

They look so stupid, they aren't much fun,

Cows aren't fun.

They eat to grow, grow to die,

Die to be et, the hamburger fry,

Cows well done.

Nobody thunk it, nobody knew,

No one imagined the great cow guru

Cow Se Tongue.

He spoke about justice, but nobody stirred;

He felt like an outcast, alone in the herd,

Cows' doldrums.

He mooed "We must fight, escape or we'll die,"

Cows gathered around, 'cause the steaks were so high,

Bad cow pun.

But then he was captured, stuffed into a crate,

Loaded onto a truck, where he rode to his fate.

Cows are bummed.

He was a scrawny calf, who looked rather woozy,

No one suspected he was packing an Uzi -

Cows with guns.

Knocked over a tractor and ran for the door,

Six gallons of gas flowed out on the floor,

Run, cows, run!

He picked up a bullhorn, jumped up on the hay,

"We are free roving bovines, we run free today!

We will fight for bovine freedom, and hold our large heads high,

And we will run free with the buffalo, or die!"

Cows with guns.

They crashed the gate in a great stampede,

Tipped over a milk truck, torched all the feed,

Cows have fun.

Sixty police cars were piled in a heap,

Covered in cow pies, covered up deep,

Much cow dung.

Black smoke rising, darkening the day,

Twelve burning McDonald's,

"Have it your way."

The President said "Enough is enough!

These uppity cattle, it's time to get tough."

Cow dung flung.

The newspapers gloated; folks sighed with relief.

Tomorrow at noon, they would all be ground beef.

Cows on buns.

The cows were surrounded. They waited and prayed.

They mooed their last moos. They chewed their last hay.

Cows outgunned.

The order was given to turn cows to whoppers,

Enforced by the might of ten thousand coppers -

But on the horizon surrounding the shoppers,

Came the deafening roar of chickens in choppers.
