Krammys Living Years

Post by Uncle Kram »

I started writing song lyrics when I joined my brothers band in 1979. It seemed my duty as the singer, and as my brother is an incredible musician we churned out a lot of stuff together.

I was eventually asked to join another band and our co-writing ended. I carried on in my new band but it wasn't until a few years later that I learned to play the guitar and started writing my own stuff, none of which is spectacular I hasten to add. I know there are some other songwriters in here and maybe they can post some creations.

These lyrics are from a song I wrote in 1993. Not the best I've ever written, but certainly the most personal, and a departure from the normal boy-meets-girl, falls-in-love, laments-lost-love themes of the genre.

My mate who I recorded this with calls it "Krammys Living Years" but as I love "The Living Years" by Mike & the Mechanics, my offering is vastly inferior, but......it is mine. You'll have to make up your own tune

SHED SOME LIGHT

For you the Autumn leaves are fallin’

Winter’s comin’ on

Here I am just half your age

Still walkin’ in the Summer sun

No-one lives forever

And every Winter ends

Time’s runnin’ out but still it’s not

Too late for us to make amends

I watched you laying funeral flowers

Bid a generation goodbye

Had no time for the livin’

And it made me wonder why

Many years the war’s been over

Nobody really won

There are still so many things

That dying’s gonna leave undone

Come on tell me

What was it really all about?

Where did it go wrong ?

Why is it that some people

Just can’t seem to get along?

Shed some light, shed some light

You have all the answers

That will tell me what I need to know

Shed some light, won’t you shed some light?

Tell me what I need to know

I watch my kids grow up too fast

We’re bonded in the heart

No guilt or misunderstanding

Keepin’ us apart

My father and children are strangers

Orbiting round the sun

You live in your world, they live in mine

Wonderin’ what they have done

They keep askin’

What was it really all about?

Where did it go wrong ?

Why is it that some people

Just can’t seem to get along?

Shed some light, shed some light

You have all the answers

That will tell me what I need to know

Shed some light, won’t you shed some light?

Tell me what I need to know

Tell me what I need to know

I have a home and family now

And I’m a man these days

Sometimes you catch me unawares

And I see you in my ways

You’re in my blood and in my head

And in my life no more

And I know that you will never come

To knock upon my door

I know that you will never come

What was it really all about?

Where did it go wrong ?

Why is it that some people

Just can’t seem to get along?

Shed some light, shed some light

You have all the answers

That will tell me what I need to know

Shed some light, shed some light

Answers you can give will surely

Tell me what I need to know

Shed some light, shed some light

Why do people have to fight?

Won’t somebody shed some light?

Please shed some light

You see the boy and not the man

Don’t you wonder who I am?

Please shed some light

Please shed some light

Please shed some light

I see from the What are you listening to right now thread that Arnold is reacquainting himself with Mike & the Mechanics. Good choice. Not sure what the situation with them is these days. The superb tones of Paul Carrack can still be heard. He played locally a couple of weeks ago. The other singer, former Sad Cafe frontman, Paul Young, died a few years back. Not sure what Mr. Rutherford is up to now

This was the 4th or 5th song I wrote on my own but despite that it's one of the better ones. Yeah I know.....peaked too early.

I always remember being picked up to record this song, as I'd just had my car stolen and wrecked by some guy who'd escaped from jail.

Many people have wrongly believed this song to be autobiographical, where the reality is that it traces the infidelity of one of my closest friends. I had to pass it off as fiction, as to defend myself by naming names would have been contrary to my code of loyalty.

The funny thing is that this is a song my friend really likes, but I don't think he sees himself as the main protagonist. That always makes me smile.

THE ROMANCE OF THE CRIME

Drivin’ home last night

I caught your scent on my fingertips

I remembered your crisp white sheets and

I remembered your soft red lips and

I remembered back at home

A woman who would not understand

That this was something

Neither of us planned

We both know it’s not for real

But still we lie here anyway

We’re together but alone

In this game we should be tryin’ not to play

There are homes and there are families

There are lives we don’t wanna tear apart

Sometimes we wonder

How it ever got this far

I know

We’re givin’ and we’re takin’

But this aint love we’re makin’

For now we love

The romance of the crime

There are people in our lives

People that we don’t wanna lose

So there are no ultimatums

Forcing either one of us to choose

An unspoken understanding

Won’t let us be too demanding

In stolen moments

As the world outside goes rushing by

I know

We’re givin’ and we’re takin’

But this aint love we’re makin’

For now we love

The romance of the crime

Soon enough there’ll come a day

A day when we won’t have to live a lie

Soon enough there’ll come a day

A day when we will have to say goodbye

Say goodbye

Goodbye

A move is on the cards now

A move that’s gonna take me far away

Soon it will be over

Soon we will be callin’ it a day

You’ve never said you love me

I’ve never said that I love you

But without each other

What we gonna do?

I know

We’re givin’ and we’re takin’

But this aint love we’re makin’

For now we love

The romance of the crime

I know

We’re givin’ and we’re takin’

But this aint love we’re makin’

We’re givin’ and we’re takin’

But this aint love we’re makin’

For now we love

The romance of the crime

I did compile my "Greatest Hits" ( :wah: ) onto a CD. If anyone fancies a copy, PM me. I'm told it makes an excellent coaster for your cup of tea  Here are some reviews:

"A star is born - he once wrote a lovely poem about the Dambusters you know" - Krams mom

"A cure for insomnia and excellent coasters" - The Tamworth Herald

"Every song is s***" - The Kram-ex

"Dad, can we have the radio on now?" - The Kramette

A certain 6-string virtuoso North of the border has promised a post here. I'm just the support act :o

Blimey Clancy, they are BOTH awesome.

The benchmark of good lyrics for me is when I read them and think "I wish I'd written that"

Writing the formulated stuff, and basically distilling everything you've ever heard is one thing, but capturing something personal, which resonates with the listener/reader is another thing altogether. Top sausage.

This was the first song where I wrote the words AND music so I'm fond of it for that reason. The one thing that bugs me a little though is the opening lyric as I don't smoke. Guess I was just lazy. Must be plenty of other words that rhyme with forget. Please feel free to insert your own opener. If it's good enough, let me know so that I can take all the credit for it :sneaky:

SLIP AWAY

I take another drag

From my last cigarette

Can’t get you off my mind

Though I’ve tried to forget

They say that time’s a healer

But how could I just erase

The memory of

The time of our lives

I face the future now

And I face it on my own

I thought I had it all set up

But here I am alone

Foolish hearts said foolish things

And come the morning light

For you and I

There was no turning back

Did I forget to mention that I need you night and day

Like a fool, I watched you walk away

Stay with me was the only thing that I really had to say

Oh but I, just let you slip away

I call your name out in my sleep

Too late I realise

I played a losing hand

Just close my eyes and analyse

The things we say before we think

That re-direct our lives

Don’t you know

I thought you were the one

Did I forget to mention that I need you night and day

Like a fool, I watched you walk away

Stay with me was the only thing that I really had to say

Oh but I, just let you slip away

Too late we sing these songs expressing

All we should have done

Only the blind ignore the danger signs

And I was so blind

Did I forget to mention that I need you night and day

Like a fool, I watched you walk away

Stay with me was the only thing that I really had to say

Oh but I, just let you slip away

I let you slip away

I let you slip away

I let you slip away

And as they used to say in Disco 45 magazine, ad-lib and fade
