Can my friends on the forum satisfy my curiosity? Where do you all come up with your screen names? some are selfevident but many stoke my wonder.
The idea behind mine is overtly simple. When I opened my email account and they asked for a screen name my wife and I tried our initials invarious order and each combination was taken. Then we used a combination of my intitials and our grandchildrens in desending order by age and the machine took it.

Knowing of my affectation, my family and friends have showered me with wolf memorabilia, my house is becoming a museum.

Totally fascinated with wolves myself.
This screen name is simply Anna Karenina, shortened. I didn't think anyone would get the reference if I used Anna K, so I went the other way. I love Tolstoy's books, but this was one of my favorites. It reminds me that one day I'll be able to sit on my couch, light a fire, have hot tea, and throw myself into classic lit again - somedayyyy!

DerWulf...Have you read "The Loop" by Nicholas Evans? A good one if you're interested in the politics of livestock ranchers and their views on re-introduction of packs into their areas. Highly reccommended!

Ah yes, group howls, used to love them! I had Siberian Huskies for many
years, and then a wolf hybrid. I do NOT recommend ever getting one.
I was younger (and foolish) at the time. Was a wonderful girl, and it worked
in my case, but I gather that's pretty rare.

Yeah...huskies and malamutes are so vocal!!! I had a hybrid myself years ago and will jump right next to Valerie in saying DO NOT ever own one of these!!! Not meant to be pets at all, not to mention the fact that there is no way to tell for certain what percentage of wolf the dog has in it. These animals can very rarely be domesticated, and can NEVER be trusted.

and conversely, i had two malamutes who were brilliant and loving and absolutely in love with snowball fights...i know they are part wolf, but these dogs were exceptionally affectionate, i trusted them with my children. i raised german shepards and alsatians, i appreciate a smart and aggressive dog. the malamutes are not for everyone however. but oh those ice-blue eyes!

i had 40 acres of woods in MASS. they were as free as the wind, but stayed close. they didn't seem to need to escape. but my weimeraner, lorelei, was one i had to guard.

An Alaskan Malamute looks like a husky, but much larger and heavier. If Cassie had answered this question, I'm sure she would have posted a picture of one! I'm hopeless at that sort of thing, or I would have done it myself.

I love Malamutes, unfortunatly not possible in the desert, but yea, those blue eyes can see your soul.
Mine was an absolute delight, more buddy than dog. we had a friend drop by with a new baby, Wolf knew and had accepted her. He sat at my feet while we chatted. Baby awakened with a cry, Wolf launched, had a paw on each of friend's shoulders, showed her his teeth, and made mild growl, then made a mewing sound, and gently probed the blanket covered baby with his nose. He looked back at friend, repeated mewing sound, and stared at her intently for 15-20 seconds, then dropped to all 4's, backed up about 3', then sat and watched intently with head cocked. Friend patted baby who made contented noises, Wolf returned to my feet with head on paws and watched. Next time baby cried, he merely lifted head, for a couple seconds then returned to nap.
My friend said that after he put paws on her shoulder, she really did'nt feel fear, but seemed like wolf was reading her mind. He loved kids, when they got too rough with him, he would wimper and fix me with a pitiful stare until I rescued him. Really loved that dog. :-6

yeah...i loved mine too. i had fritz, brandy, stuka, lorelei, clyde the dumbass english setter, bogie the collie, barney the beagle, mitzi the ankle-biting but smart as hell pekinese, and so many more. not to mention larry the bird. (get it, larry bird?) i think i should start a pets thread.

"Cars" Screen name chosen because I used to tinker on cars, the older ones.
I used to be pretty good with them. That was before all the new electronic devices now on the cars that need expensive analyzing equipment to work on them. So now I just like to drive the cars & follow the different models & their features.
Anyway, getting on the sidetrack of dogs, I used to have an AKC 1st place show winner Labrador Retrevier. He used to love to ride in cars, so he would jump into my car every Saturday when I went to get rolls & pastries for our family breakfast. He was so friendly, & lovable, unfortunately too friendly. As he was "Dog-napped" one morning when he went out to do his business. My neighbor told me that they saw my dog jump into a waiting van, and they sped away. I never saw my "Baron" again. :-1 (Our Family was heartbroken)
(A few weeks later in the newspaper, it was said that there was a ring of "Dog-nappers" stealing pedegree dogs and selling them out of the state for profit)

Well..mine is pretty easy to figure out... an old grey deadhead. Well.. not that old but I do remember the real Dead, not the current touring lineup. Last live show.. July 1995.. Highgate Springs, VT... a true delight..
Wulfie.. have you ever been out to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Idaho.. couple hours out of Sun Valley over Galena Peak. Town there is Stanley and they did a big wolf re-intro there. Did some hiking int he backcountry and never did see any of them.. did find sign and hear them occasionally ..

They typically are shy of humans [to their own benefit], if you really want to see them ., plan on spending a lot of time, and learn the pack's habits. Their self preserving shyness is why being acknowledged by them is so special.

Boy cars, do I know what you mean. When I was young I had an old pick up. I used to sit on the wheel well with my feet down in the engine compartment while working on it and I'm 6'2" and weigh 200 lbs so that was no small feat.
I tell this to the yourg guys I work with who are into todays cars and they don't beleive me that at one time cars where engine and transmission and little else.
And as far as todays cars, man I can't begin to understand what half the stuff is under the hood.
My son is certified to inspect autos in our state and is into drag raceing at a strip near our home. When he tells me of a new speed gizmo he just got I just stare at him with very little idea what the heck he's talking about.
We used to drive to the strip change plugs and go. not today
I used to be pretty good with them. That was before all the new electronic devices now on the cars that need expensive analyzing equipment to work on them. So now I just like to drive the cars & follow the different models & their features.

Ya jahamaa things sure have changed. I'm not so sure for the best though, because of all those new fangled devices, you can't buy a new car for a reasonable price any more! $30,000+ is light by todays standards. But thinking about it, maybe it's all relative. 20 years ago cars were $5,000 -$6,000. But salaries were 1/4 what they are today also. So it's probably a wash! :wah: (Just too many gagets to go wrong)
