Help..............

Last night I recieved my b-day present early. I got a new tower for my computer. It's a HP Pavilion Slimline PC. I love it it's really small. However here's my problem, how do I get all the files off my old computer to my new one.

My husband suggested hooking my old tower up on his spot in our home network and using the File Settings Transfer Wizard to move my information. Does anyone have any information or tips on using this wizard.

I copied all mine on to a CD and then saved them onto the new puty when i got it up & running.

Ah ha...got me there. I only copied the Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc files in 'My Documents'. Also all my pictures.. I have a hotmail account so all my 'contacts' are on there.

I had to load Office 2000 from the original disc and 'Publisher' as well. I went from Win 98 to win XP and haven't had any problems ...SO FAR...

I also have a 'Backup disc' from my old Puty which I used to download my BT Broadband stuff.

it was really daunting, but I still have my old 'tower' just in case I've missed anyting. I've avoided putting everything but the kitchen sink on this new set up. 3 months later and no probs.....fingers crossed

for under $20.00 (US) you can buy a "thumb drive" you can "back up" your old PC onto that and simply load it to the new one.

The you have the thump drive for a lot of uses. You can back up your PC to in (as we all should do occasionally), or you can carry around all kinds of data from home to work.... station to station... MUCH faster and easier than copying to a CD.

Ok guys, I went to the link that spot gave me, however it sais I'm gonna need a 3 1/2 floppy disk. My new hardrive doesn't have a spot for a 3 1/2 floppy. :-5

You do need either a home network, or a CAT5 ethernet crossover cable capable of linking two computers back to back, or a "direct connection" cable that has a plug type that both your computers can take (either serial, or parallel, or (possibly, I'm guessing here) USB). If you don't have an ethernet connector on the old computer, you might be stuck. If you don't have a router or a switch, you might need to buy a cable. You certainly don't have to have a floppy drive, so long as we can find an alternative transport medium for the data.

Keep talking, I'm sure we can get it done.

Do you have a Windows XP CD?

Does the old computer have an ethernet port?

Do you have a router or a switch, with both computers cabled to it?

I have a home network, but not sure bout the rest. Let me do some looking around today.
