Dollar stores

Post by BabyRider »

Do any of you use "dollar stores"? I really like mine, I buy all my sponges, buckets, some cleaning supplies, christmas wrap, greeting cards, and things like this at my dollar store. I had stocked up really well on these items and hadn't been in for a while. Well, tonight I had to go back and when I took my stuff up to check-out, I found they had installed scanners. Now...call me nuts, but at a store where EVERYTHING you buy is $1, what, I'm wondering, is the purpose of scanners???? Does this seem as absurd to anyone else as it does to me??

I sometimes visit what is called "Poundland" & other "cheap" places, however the prices are all different - not a Pound, but not generally more than a few Pounds. Some of the stuff in these places is good, some is almost worthless rubbish.

Installing scanners does seem a bit odd - unless they're going to start stocking goods with varying prices in the fairly near future, or the shop assistants can't count "1,2,3...."!

Hi. I'm Peg and I'm a Dollar store addict. I buy gift wrap, stocking stuffers, school supplies, cleaning supplies, dog and cat treats, and much more. The problem is, I go in after 5 objects, and end up with $30 worth or more almost every time.

I agree with ScoupeSlave that the scanners are used for inventory purposes. Make it much easier.

Yes, I'm a dollar store addict too. Guess there's worse things we could be addicted to!

Inventory.......that makes so much sense that I feel rather foolish.

Dollar store addict too I have 3 around my house and love em all for different reasons. Candle holders being my passion well I have acquired quite a few from the one dollar store and they are beautiful and who would know they were cheap hehehehe

Ok looks like we need a dollar store addict support thread hehehehe

Scanner is an inventory thing also helps the owner determine what to bring in again and what to scrap by means of sales. All depends on how the owner wants to run the store.

I have one thing to say about buying food at a dollar store:

EWWWWWWWWWW

As for the "scanner" thing...inventory would be a good idea if they take inventory at that store. My impression of dollar stores (and don't get me wrong, I love 'em for certain things) is that they take overruns. The stuff that's been sitting at the regular store long enough that the regular store thinks it won't sell...so they sell it to the dollar store. Ergo, no inventory - they get what they get.

I could be wrong...but this was always the impression that I had of these stores (which is my reason for reacting the way I did to buying food there...I would NEVER get anything that goes in my mouth at one of these stores. Ick.)

Are you kidding Baby? Sometimes I'll go into my local dollar store and blow my whole paycheck. I'll go home and stack my two or sometimes three ( if I have overtime) items on my living room floor and just gaze and wonder at my callous consumerism.

All joking aside I love em. The question I have is who comes up with the ideas for all those cheap plastic toys? I'm glad they did. I take the grandkids there first when we go shopping and then when I get to the more expensive places and they ask for something else I tell them didn' t pap just by you a toy at the last place?

I'm golden until they begin to understand what a dollar is. :wah: :wah: :wah:

Hi BabyRider,

Our dollar store is going out of business! They have been having a "two items for a dollar" the past couple of months.

I guess nobody was shopping there.

Yes I think there are "Dollar" stores most everywhere. I bought AA batteries made to look like Duracell. 8 Batteries for a Dollar! There 4 were required in the device I had, they lasted not even 20 minutes. The other 4 another 20 minutes. :wah:

So- - - - - -. But I did buy gardening "gloves" for a Dollar, and they were not so bad.

I absolutely love dollar stores! they are the only refuge for teacher's in search of rewards, pencils, awards, paper, etc.etc.etc.

I also love to use them for stocking stuffers. Youcan really load up a stocking with some neat stuff at those stores. Heck, I think I even bought the stocking there!

boxes, with little closures that I think were plastic but made to look like bone,

how in the HECK they sold 'em for a dollar I'll never know, I bought a bunch

and ended up keeping them all!

Doggers squeaky toys for a buck when they run ya 7-8 at Pet Smart, at the

Of course, another reason for the scanners might be the fact that most people who work at them (or at most retail places) can't do simple math.

How true!! Everyone is so dependant on computers to do everything for them, people can't make change any more without help!! Too funny!

Dollar stores are popping up all over in my area. They are pretty popular in the rural south. Good buys every once in a while. I still like to go to Goodwill every now and then. :yh_money

I shop ther occasionally, but am cautious over what I purchase. I do not allow my daughter to buy toys there, unless I see a toy that is higher uality, but was discontinued. Even a dollar is too much to waste on junk. I also feel a twinge of guilt over shopping in such places because I know most likely nearly everythijng in there that I bought was made in a sweatshop or some workplace in Taiwan that grossly underpaid its employees. When I purchase things on impulse, I first ask myself if I need this or will I just toss it. I am trying hard to cut down on my consumerism habits.

I work in the UK equivlent, "Poundland", not a nice place to work at all I have to say, but the bar codes are for stock control, they allow managment to know what needs reoredering without searching the shop floor for it, they also allow them to montior how fast stock is being sold, so they can order extra of good lines, and they can use it to monitor the number of products being returnd as faulty, so they can take action against the supplier if theres too many dmages and cancel the contract. It also allows us to slow down the checkouts to a snails pace when the server crashes and all the tills die! Back to the old way, counting things and doing the oh so hard maths in your head.:)
