I hate it...I went to Walmart today to get some stuff I needed. Found a really cool Beatles t-shirt by the way. Anyways only 4 cashier lines were open, and they all had lady's with full baskets waiting. So I head to the self-checkout. I hate those dang things. Managed to only scan 1 thing twice, however the flower seeds I bought wouldn't show as being placed in the bag. So after I scanned each of them had to have an assistant come and key in a code to let me continue :-5

Took me 20 minutes to scan and pay for my stuff. :rolleyes:

I must admit to loving them. I use them all the time at tesco' and it saves ages in a queue. Brilliant. It took a bit of practice though to get it right

Wal-Mart operates with a bare bones staff whom they pay a very low wage.

This is done to maximize Wal-Mart's profits, which are in the billions of dollars.

If you want service, try shopping at an independent business owned by somebody in your community.

I would, but between Wal-Mart, K-Mart and Target - all the great Mom and Pop places have gone out of business around here.

Same here Lilac. My town has 1 grocery store, but the prices are outrageous and the produce is nasty. I usually just shop there for the emergency items, like bread, milk and such.

You have to get involved in your neighborhood, if they plan on moving in, get your neighbors together. Theyve been stopped before, theyve also been made to build with the neighborhood in mind architecturally speaking. This can only happen if you get involved though.

I refuse to use self-check-outs. Even if I have only one item and I have to wait in line behind full carts. That's someone's job that's gone.

Ummm, I think my "town" is a little beyond that now. What was a small town when I went to high school has grown into a metropolis while I was away. Now that I am back, I am looking at trying to save enough money to move to a small town somewhere. You know, some place where atmosphere is as important as the almight dollar. Those days are long since past for just about any town in Oakland County, Michigan.

I understand that. The town Im moving to is like this. Its a small community, a river valley town. Lots of mom and pop places, bakery, small hardware. old theatre. The new stuff is a few miles up the road but not in your face.

I remember those days, too. I also remember when we had to go INSIDE the banks and actually talk to a LIVE PERSON. All sorts of things like that. Our own technology is taking away jobs that used to require people. Which is why I avoid things like self-check-outs. Just my own little private rebellion.

I haven't seen a gas station that had live attendants in years!

In Pennsylvania, I stopped at a gas station in a little town my sister lives in. I shut off the car, unbuckled and started to get out of the car, when suddently theres this guy at my window asking me what kind of gas I wanted............. I was so shocked and amazed, I made such a to do over him pumping the gas, I embrassed the guy something fierce.

Next time I stopped, I was cool...........
