Patrick how could I have missed the obvious irony in your all too brief post, You must not put yourself down like this, I know many Americans and they all seem very well educated in both history and geography.

In fact I have learn't far more from them than vice versa, I suppose a classical education is not much use nowadays, however given your request if there is anything else specific you wish to know I will be glad to assist in any way I can.

I'm not Patrick, but I would love your help in learning Latin. I can't find that anywhere in the US (so far).

Little crustless cucumber sandwiches is yet another reason why I like the UK. Irish lace. Scots in kilts...and gmc, Customs requires you to wear your kilt if you visit us. You can leave the bagpipes at home...they are not very good to dance to.

This is such a vague question.

What you should be asking is somethings like.

Is the UK bad at how well it's government governs?

Or, is the UK Bad because it does not give enough money to third world counties? Or, is the UK bad because it lacks staying power when things get difficult?

Basically the question 'Is the United Kingdom bad?' needs to be more precise.

What you should be asking is something like.

Is the UK bad at how well it's government governs?

Or, is the UK Bad because it does not give enough money to third world counties? Or, is the UK bad because it lacks staying power when things get difficult?

I tend to agree with you. This question certainly needs to be more precise. One can not generalize a country as good or bad. A country can be good in some respect and may not be good in some other respect.

i studied latin in both high school and college. admittedly, the latin in high school was a special arrangement, one on one with an indulgent social studies instructor. in college it was an elective course. took one year in high school, one year in college. fluent? not by any stretch of the imagination. i'm about as fluent in latin as i am in japanese: shimbun o kaimasu: i buy a newspaper.

but it is great to have that closer/finer-grained recognition of latinate roots of words.
