Having not bothered to watch television for nearly five years, John Humphrys was "quite shocked" when he emerged from his "Rip van Winkle state" and switched it on again, he said yesterday.

There is very, very little worth seeing on T.V. Great Britian imports lots of "trash"

from the U.S.A., as well as making it itself. In general, what's modern is shallow

and vacuous, anything decent is likely to be old and very, very familiar.
