Songs That Make You Cry

Post by Peg »

Is there a song that you just cannot make it through without crying? I have one. John Michael Montgomery did a song called "The Little Girl". Back when this song first came out, a girl was reported missing from the local mall. A few days later, her body was found at the local garbage dump. She was very tiny for her age and severely malnourished. The truth came out that the parents used the missing from the mall story and dumped her body in the dump. Great people huh? As he imposed his sentence, the judge referred to the little girl, Tasha Lantham, as "The Little Girl". Her life was as sad as the life that girl in the song's was. From the day of the sentencing on, I cannot listen to that song without crying. Can be quite embarrassing when you hear it out in public.

This always chokes me up.

And I don't have kids.

Butterfly Kisses

Bob Carlisle

There's two things I know for sure:

She was sent here from heaven and she's

daddy's little girl.

As I drop to my knees by her bed at night

She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and

I thank god for all the joy in my life

Oh, but most of all

For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer;

sticking little white flowers all up in her

hair; "Walk beside the pony, Daddy, it's my first ride."

"I know the cake looks funny, Daddy, but I sure tried."

In all that I've done wrong I know I must

have done something right to deserve a hug

every morning and butterfly kisses at night.

Sweet 16 today

She's looking like her mama a little more everyday

One part woman, the other part girl.

To perfume and make-up from ribbons and curls

Trying her wings out in a great big world.

But I remember

Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer; sticking

little white flowers all up in her hair.

"You know how much I love you, Daddy, But if you

don't mind I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time."

With all that I've done wrong I must have done

something right to deserve her love every morning

and butterfly kisses at night.

All the precious time

Like the wind, the years go by.

Precious butterfly.

Spread your wings and fly.

She'll change her name today.

She'll make a promise and I'll give her away.

Standing in the bride-room just staring at her.

She asked me what I'm thinking and I said "I'm not

sure-I just feel like I'm losing my baby girl."

She leaned over;

gave me butterfly kisses with her mama there,

Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair

"Walk my down the aisle, Daddy-it's just about time."

"Does my wedding gown look pretty, Daddy? Daddy, don't cry!"

Oh, with all that I've done wrong I must have

done something right.

To deserve your love every morning and butterfly

kisses-I couldn't ask God for more, man this is what love is.

I know I gotta let her go, but I'll always remember

every hug in the morning and butterfly kisses.

2. Already There - Lonestar

3 Hero - by Enrique Inglasis

4. God Bless the U.S.A - Lee Greenwood

Her parents never took the young girl to church.

Never spoke of his name never read her his word.

Two non believers walking lost in this world

took their baby with them what a sad little girl.....

Her daddy drank all day and mommy did drugs.

never wanted to play or give kisses & hugs.

She'd watched the tv and sit there on the couch

while her mom feel asleep and her daddy went out

And the drinking and the fighting

just got worse every nite.

Behind their couch she'd be hiding

oh what a sad little life..

And like it always does the bad just got worse.

with every slap and every curse

Until her daddys in a drunk rage one nite

Used a gun on her mom and then took his life

And some ppl from the city took the girl far away

To a new Mom and a new Dad

Kisses & Hugs every day!

Her first day at Sunday school

The teacher walked in

and a small little girl stared at a picture of him....

She said I know that man

there on that cross I don't know his name

but i know hes got arms

cause he was there in my old house

held me close to his side....

as i hid there behind our couch the nite my parents died......

I cried for a couple of years every time I heard the already heart wrenching "Fairytale Of NewYork" by the Pogues after Kirstie McColl was killed by some rich scumbag in a speedboat in Mexico in 2000.

It was Christmas Eve babe

In the drunk tank

An old man said to me,

Won't see another one

And then he sang a song

'The Rare Old Mountain Dew'

I turned my face away

And dreamed about you

Got on a lucky one

Came in eighteen to one

I've got a feeling

This year's for me and you

So happy Christmas

I love you baby

I can see a better time

When all our

Dreams come true

They've got cars

Big as bars

They've got rivers of gold

But the wind goes

Right through you

It's no place for the old

When you first

Took my hand

On a cold Christmas Eve

You promised me

Broadway was

Waiting for me

You were handsome

You were pretty

Queen of New York City

When the band finished playing

They howled out for more

Sinatra was swinging,

All the drunks

They were singing

We kissed on a corner

Then danced through the night

[CHORUS:]

The boys of the NYPD choir

Were singing 'Galway Bay'

And the bells were ringing

Out for Christmas Day

You're a bum

You're a punk

You're an old

Sl*t on junk

Lying there almost

Dead on a drip

In that bed

You scum bag

You maggot

You're cheap and you're haggard

Happy Christmas your arse

I pray God

It's our last

[Repeat chorus]

I could have been someone

Well so could anyone

You took my dreams

From me when

I first found you

I kept them with me babe

I put them with my own

Can't make it all alone

I've built my dreams

Around you

Not a song, but a poem. It always makes me cry! :-1

Daddy's Day

Her hair was up in a ponytail

Her favourite dress tied with a bow,

Today was Daddy's Day at school

And she couldn't wait to go.

But her Mom said

That she probably should stay home,

Why the kids might not understand

If she went to school alone.

But she was not afraid

She knew just what to say,

What to tell her classmates

Of why he wasn't there today.

But still her mother worried

For her to face this day alone,

And that was why once again

She tried to keep her daughter home.

But the little girl went to school

Eager to tell them all,

About a dad she never sees

A dad who never calls.

There were daddies along the wall in back

For everyone to meet,

Children squirming impatiently

Anxious in their seats.

One by one the teacher called

A student from the class,

To introduce their daddy

As seconds slowly passed.

At last the teacher called her name

Every child turned to stare,

Each of them was searching

For a man who wasn't there.

"Where's her daddy at?"

She heard a boy call out,

"She probably doesn't have one"

Another student dared to shout.

And from somewhere near the back

She heard a daddy say,

"Looks like another deadbeat dad

Too busy to waste his day."

The words did not offend her

As she smiled up at her Mom,

And looked back at her teacher

Who told her to go on.

And with hands behind her back

Slowly she began to speak,

And out from the mouth of a child

Came words incredibly unique.

"My Daddy couldn't be here

Because he lives so far away,

But I know he wishes he could be

Since this is such a special day.

And though you cannot meet him

I wanted you to know,

All about my daddy

And how much he loves me so.

He loved to tell me stories

He taught me to ride my bike,

He surprised me with pink roses

And taught me to fly a kite.

We used to share fudge sundaes

And ice cream in a cone,

And though you cannot see him

I'm not standing here alone.

'Cause my daddy's always with me

Even though we are apart,

I know because he told me

He'll forever be in my heart."

With that, her little hand reached up

And lay across her chest,

Feeling her own heartbeat

Beneath her favourite dress.

And from somewhere in the crowd of dads

Her mother stood in tears,

Proudly watching her daughter,

Who was wise beyond her years.

For she stood up for the love

Of a man not in her life,

Doing what was best for her

Doing what was right.

And when she dropped her hand back down

Staring straight into the crowd,

She finished with a voice so soft

But its message clear and loud.

"I love my daddy very much

He's my shining star,

And if he could, he'd be here

But heaven's just too far.

You see he was a fireman

And died just this past year,

When airplanes hit the towers

And taught Americans to fear.

But sometimes when I close my eyes

It's like he never went away,"

And then she closed her eyes

And saw him there that day.

And to her mother's amazement

She witnessed with surprise,

A room full of daddies and children

All starting to close their eyes.

Who knows what they saw before them

Who knows what they felt inside,

Perhaps for merely a second

They saw him at her side.

"I know you're with me Daddy"

To the silence she called out,

And what happened next made believers

Of those once filled with doubt.

Not one in that room could explain it

For each of their eyes had been closed,

But there on the desk beside her

Was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.

And a child was blessed, if just for a moment

By the love of her shining bright star,

And given the gift of believing

That heaven is never too far.

Let's see...Morning Has Broken was played at my sister's funeral when I was eight, so that does it for me. I agree, Amazing Grace, too. And I had just bought the soundtrack for "City Of Angels" and was listening to Sarah Mclachlan's tear-jerker Angel when it came over the radio that JFK jr.'s plane went down. Not a big junior fan, it's just something that stuck with me in the lyrics..."you are pulled from the wreckage"..."you're in the arms of the angels"...

Played at my best friends funeral (she died at 38)

SARAH McLACHLAN LYRICS

"I Will Remember You"

I will remember you

Will you remember me?

Don't let your life pass you by

Weep not for the memories

Remember the good times that we had?

I let them slip away from us when things got bad

How clearly i first saw you smilin' in the sun

Wanna feel your warmth upon me, i wanna be the one

I will remember you

Will you remember me?

Don't let your life pass you by

Weep not for the memories

I'm so tired but i can't sleep

Standin' on the edge of something much too deep

It's funny how we feel so much but we cannot say a word

We are screaming inside, but we can't be heard

But i will remember you

Will you remember me?

Don't let your life pass you by

Weep not for the memories

I'm so afraid to love you, but more afraid to loose

Clinging to a past that doesn't let me choose

Once there was a darkness, deep and endless night

You gave me everything you had, oh you gave me light

And i will remember you

Will you remember me?

Don't let your life pass you by

Weep not for the memories

And i will remember you

Will you remember me?

Don't let your life pass you by

Weep not for the memories

Weep not for the memories

Fond memories of my daughter's childhoods they both knew how to sing this song in ... sign languange.....

Angels Among Us by Alabama

I was walking home from school on a cold winter day.

Took a shortcut through the woods, and I lost my way.

It was getting late, and I was scared and alone.

But then a kind old man took my hand and led me home.

Mama couldn’t see him, but he was standing there.

And I knew in my heart, he was the answer to my prayers.

Chorus

Oh I believe there are angels among us.

Sent down to us from somewhere up above.

They come to you and me in our darkest hours.

To show us how to live, to teach us how to give.

To guide us with a light of love.

When life held troubled times, and had me down on my knees.

There’s always been someone there to come along and comfort me.

A kind word from a stranger, to lend a helping hand.

A phone call from a friend, just to say I understand.

And ain’t it kind of funny that at the dark end of the road.

Someone lights the way with just a single ray of hope.

Chorus

They wear so many faces, show up in the strangest places.

To guide us with their mercy, in our time of need.

Chorus

To guide us with a light of love.
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.

I lost a very close friend to suicide when l was only 19 and she was 16.

At her memorial we played her favorite song which she used to drive me nuts playing.

Somewhere out there, from a cartoon movie about a mouse named fivel.

An american tale l believe it is called.

l cant listen to that song without being in a mess even now..

'some where out there beneath this great big sky

someone's there thinking of me and loving me tonite'

she had a very hard life and it ended way to young l like to think she is up there singing it and finally happy and free xx

Some songs have imagery that works. Sheer naked misery I can laugh at but making the best of what life brings, that affects me. Elkie Brooks singing this, for example:

Pearl's a singer, she stands up when she plays the piano in a nightclub.

Pearl's a singer, she sings songs for the lost and lonely,

Her job is entertaining folks, singing songs and telling jokes in a nightclub.

Pearl's a singer and they say that she once was a winner in a contest.

Pearl's a singer and they say that she once cut a record,

They played it for a week or so on the local radio, it never made it.

She wanted to be Betty Grable, but now she sits there at that beer stained table

Dreaming of the things she never got to do, all those dreams that never came true,

Pearl's a singer, she stands up when she plays the piano in a nightclub.

The Rose - Bette Midler

I'm not sure whether I sound obscure with this, but one of the few guys who gets a lump in my throat is Wesley Willis, in much the way that some of the Arles paintings of Vincent Van Gogh do (I'm sure there are parallels between the two of them artistically as well as the more obvious ones in their lifestyles). Cut the Mullet, for example; it's not apparently sad but despite the words being so sparse there's an entire subtext of life events that come to mind, an overlap between hearer and singer that makes irrelevant the environmental and period differences.

How he can do that - to extract a core set of self-referential comments which map onto so many other lives - is what reveals him as one of the masters of lyric construction. To match so many lyrics to a very restricted tonal variance and yet produce songs that are so distinct is another step of mastery. Each time I hear "My Mother Smokes Crack Rocks" or (almost upbeat!) "I whupped Batman's Ass" there's something entirely new there. I've played maybe five of his tracks in the last hour, and he does strange things to emotional perspective. Maybe in a hundred years (or less, who knows?) he'll be music's equivalent of pioneer impressionism.

I know this is a bit of a cheat but this morning as I was driving to the shop for the Sunday papers, a piece of music came over the radio and it was wonderful. It was called The Ashokan Farewell by a composer I have never heard of (Unger?). It shouldn't have moved me because it was played on the bagpipes of all things but it was the most beautiful music I have ever heard.

That's not a cheat at all - and it's Jay Ungar of Swingology. I'd only known it as part of the background music on Ken Burns' documentary of the American Civil War before, as a slow waltz on violin and guitar, but I did hear James Galway playing it on a flute which worked. Never anyone on a bagpipe. An odd instrument, for an American folk piece.

And taught me to fly a kite.

We used to share fudge sundaes

And ice cream in a cone,

And though you cannot see him

I'm not standing here alone.

'Cause my daddy's always with me

Even though we are apart,

I know because he told me

He'll forever be in my heart."

With that, her little hand reached up

And lay across her chest,

Feeling her own heartbeat

Beneath her favourite dress.

And from somewhere in the crowd of dads

Her mother stood in tears,

Proudly watching her daughter,

Who was wise beyond her years.

For she stood up for the love

Of a man not in her life,

Doing what was best for her

Doing what was right.

And when she dropped her hand back down

Staring straight into the crowd,

She finished with a voice so soft

But its message clear and loud.

"I love my daddy very much

He's my shining star,

And if he could, he'd be here

But heaven's just too far.

You see he was a fireman

And died just this past year,

When airplanes hit the towers

And taught Americans to fear.

But sometimes when I close my eyes

It's like he never went away,"

And then she closed her eyes

And saw him there that day.

And to her mother's amazement

She witnessed with surprise,

A room full of daddies and children

All starting to close their eyes.

Who knows what they saw before them

Who knows what they felt inside,

Perhaps for merely a second

They saw him at her side.

"I know you're with me Daddy"

To the silence she called out,

And what happened next made believers

Of those once filled with doubt.

Not one in that room could explain it

For each of their eyes had been closed,

But there on the desk beside her

Was a fragrant long-stemmed pink rose.

And a child was blessed, if just for a moment

By the love of her shining bright star,

And given the gift of believing

That heaven is never too far.

An hour to appreciate them,

A day to love them,

And an entire lifetime to forget them.

Songs That Make You Cry

Post by Uncle Kram »

This is from the album "The Rising" with it's 9/11 theme. The whole album always makes me feel a bit choked - this one in particular

YOU'RE MISSING

Shirts in the closet, shoes in the hall

Mama's in the kitchen, baby and all

Everything is everything

Everything is everything

But you're missing

Coffee cups on the counter, jackets on the chair

Papers on the door step, but you're not there

Everything is everything

Everything is everything

But you're missing

Pictures on the nightstand, TV's on the den

Your house is waiting, your house is waiting

For you to walk in, for you to walk in

But you're missing, you're missing

You're missing, when I shut out the lights

You're missing, when I close my eyes

You're missing, when I see the sun rise

You're missing

Children are asking if it's alright

Will you be in our arms tonight?

Morning is morning, the evening falls I got

Too much room in my bed, too many phone calls

How's everything, everything?

Everything, everything

You're missing, you're missing

God's drifting in heaven, devil's in the mailbox

I got dust on my shoes, nothing but teardrops

The last time I was able to listen to Evanescence's My Immortal completely was about two and a half years ago. I can't stand to anymore, it makes me break down everytime.

My best friend died in a car crash two and a half years ago and that was the song playing on the radio the first time I drove through the street where the accident happened a few days later.

One of my favourite songs for very personal reasons. By R.E.M

"When the day is long and the night, the night is yours alone,

When you're sure you've had enough of this life, well hang on

Don't let yourself go, 'cause everybody cries and everybody hurts sometimes

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it's time to sing along

When your day is night alone, (hold on, hold on)

If you feel like letting go, (hold on)

When you think you've had too much of this life, well hang on

'Cause everybody hurts. Take comfort in your friends

Everybody hurts. Don't throw your hand. Oh, no. Don't throw your hand

If you feel like you're alone, no, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life, the days and nights are long,

When you think you've had too much of this life to hang on

Well, everybody hurts sometimes,

Everybody cries. And everybody hurts sometimes

And everybody hurts sometimes. So, hold on, hold on

Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on

Everybody hurts. You are not alone ."

Much better if you hear it instead of reading the words. It's brilliant. :-1

The Rose - Bette Midler

The second one makes me cry but also gives me a real feeling of hope.

I play the song "The Rose" at least once a week. Saw the film at the cinema every day for a week when it came out

"Everything is Beautiful" by The Byrds

I was in 6th grade (about 12 years old) back in '73 and we learned this song in music class one October day.

The class started at 11:45 a.m. and went until 12:30 p.m. My maternal grandfather, who I loved so much, was undergoing open heart surgery at 12:00 p.m. that day.

He didn't make it.

Everytime I hear this song, it reminds me of that sad moment in time :-1

A Hard Call to Make...it was ironic we had heard this song on the way to the hopsital the day we had to turn off my dads machine...:( When we heard it--we didn't know a name or anything and called the radio station..they said they didn't know which one it was but would look--the morning we buried my dad - a lady called me at about 7ish and said she had found it!!! Its by J Michael HArder?

The umpire had got sick so he said he'd give it a try

So there was my dad, callin' them balls and strikes

I can still hear the crack of the bat

I never got a hold of one like that

I was roundin' second when the third base coach

Took a big chance and wave me home

I'm pretty sure the ball touched me before I touched the plate

But when it's your dad, that's a hard call to make

For the most part,I think I made him proud

But there was one night,I know I let him down

I had known them boys all my life

I should've known better then to take that ride

The county sherriff was a friend of his

Said that's why he was bringin' me in

He handed me the phone, said "Sorry son, everybody makes mistakes"

But when it's your dad, that's a hard call to make

It's not easy as wrong or right

It ain't always black and white

Life's a thousand shades of grey

He had a plan for just about everything

An' he'd it known that if this day ever came

That he had lived a good long life

And he had always fought a good fight

So when the doctor said,"It's up to you"

I knew what I had to do

I read the form picked up a pen and my hand began to shake

'Cause when it's your dad, that's a hard call to make

It's not as easy as wrong or right

It ain't always black and white

Life's a thousand shades of grey
