Instant Message programs and how you use them.
Ok. I am a forum junkie. While I am a registered member of 10 forums - I am only active on about half of them. By active, I mean that I check them and post on them about every day.
So on one of the pet forums that I belong to I told some idiot that he should take his puking chihuahua to the vet instead of looking for free medical advice on the internet.
Next thing I know - he is IM'ing me!
Personally, I DO NOT IM anyone that I don't know. If someone who is a longtime member of one of the forums that I am active on should sent me a pm and ask if I minded if they IM'ed me - well that is one thing. But for someone who has posted 1 whole post on a forum to IM a complete stranger is just rude.
Am I crazy? Do you like to "know" the people that you are "talking" to online?

I always, ALWAYS ask for a "go-ahead" before I IM someone. I don't IM very often since Yahoo messenger makes my computer run like mollasses in February, but still, it's common sense. And common courtesy.

If I want to chat to someone at random I go onto Yahoo and play chess. I've no idea who I'm playing against, but I talk a lot during the game.

I've been IM'd by a chap on another forum and instantly felt like I was being stalked. Much prefer general discussion with people I don't know.
I have made a great friend from one forum who turned out to live locally, but we were very polite and public until we decided we weren't perverts.

No one can IM you without permission if you haven't added them to your contact list and set your IM options to be visible only to your named contacts. To get on your contact list requires a request from the other person. Then it is up to you to accept or not.

Seeing as you've set yourself as invisible on the forum, no one can IM you from here. Nothing stopping someone PMing you from a post though, but not an IM.
Scintillating wit and charm? That's putting it mildly.

After you have been on a forum and read posts by people for a while you do get to know them.
I went back and changed my profile in that forum and reset some of my security settings on Yahoo.
I really only use the yahoo to talk to my DH. I do have a couple of other people listed there as friends but most of them are pretty quiet.

i think lilac has a point in you do get to know people after a while on a forum by the posts they make, you get a pretty good indication as to what they are like
many people here im sure i would get on with well in real life having seen thier reactions to threads, in turn i would say i wouldent get on with some who are nasty in most threads & wouldent want to meet in real life, yup what you write says a lot about who you are
