I think they bring to my mind Elijah, I can well imagine he had the same delivery.

Kierkegaard's concerns for Christianity were anti-congregational to the extent that the communities he criticized subscribed en masse to the faith rather than as believing individuals, but other than that his sense of religion was entirely internalized. These ranters aren't anti-church specifically, they're anti-world. They know Christianity - Christianity is what they do. Anyone, church state or individual, who does different, is destined for hellfire. I can't bring myself to say they're not Christian - for one thing I've had more than enough people in this life tell me that I'm not one myself. They're very angry, but then they've got a lot of people outside who are critical of them, it's not surprising that they fall back on expressing a rather triumphalist anger. Just like Elijah, indeed, and for exactly the same reason.

There's a simple test for whether these people speak with an authentic Christian voice - it's a let's-pretend test. Let's pretend that every honest village-church-buried Christian goodfellow that ever lived is sat in a hall, and you put these people before them, get them to perform and to fully and accurately explain their message. Which way do you think the hall is going to vote - will they agree or disagree? Damn right they'll say it's an authentic exposition of Christian values. Now, times may have moved on and we may have a somewhat more PC notion of God's Saving Grace, but I'm not going to say of any outfit getting the hall's majority vote that they shouldn't be allowed out into the light of day.

It would help if you could sketch in a line or two why you think their message isn't an accurate reflection of the Church's historical position, LilacDragon and DesignerGal. Do you think Christians haven't unanimously said these things in the past? And if it was the message of the church in times past, why shouldn't there be at least a small part of the church still saying it now, if only for continuity? I'm not entirely sure of your positions except that you don't like the messengers.

God is love. And what really bothers me is that these people show up at funerals. How that must hurt the family, dont you think? My position is that any hate is wrong. We are mere mortals and have no right to judge eachother over what lifestyles have been chosen. I know you may think I am judging her over her lifestyle but I do oppose hate in any form against any person because that is spewing venom. THey should be teaching love and tolerance.

They rather dementedly think that since homosexuality has become tolerated within the armed forces, any volunteer is damned by proximity, by selecting to live cheek by jowl with bum-boys, and that consequently those being buried are, to the height of probability, hellbound. Hence the demonstrating against further volunteering. They're doing God's works, given that their understanding of God and Leviticus is correct. They've certainly got Leviticus on their side. You're telling me that you know God's mind better than they do, and I've always found that a suspect approach. I've certainly never adopted it myself.

The sad part is that they donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t realise that what they call the Old Testament was written to capture The Oral Law and that over the years we, the people who have the Old Testament as our source of truth, have by way of divine inspired prophets and divine inspired rabbinical debate moved what was written in books such as Leviticus into the modern world.

(Or at least a close approximation thereof!)

Add to that the Christian message the all that a Christian needs to ensure a place in Ã¢â‚¬ËœheavenÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ is to accept that Jesus died to absolve from all sin those who accept him as having done so, again something that they fail to grasp.

I have learned a great deal about the major religions of the world as much out of interest as anything else, and it never ceases to amaze me how few so-called Christians live lives that are about as far removed from the teachings of their supposed beliefs as could be.

That Westboro shower are a nasty bunch of scum who do themselves no credit and bring REAL Christians into disrepute by their foul words and deeds.

And IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m not a Christian.

As someone who was once married to an active duty military man, therefore living on many military instillations throughout the world, I can tell you that there is no single group of men more homophobic then the U.S. military! While there maybe an official don't ask, don't tell policy in place - standing in the middle of an Army base in a uniform is NOT where someone would wish to "come out of the closet".

Look - I am not a religious person, per se. I believe in a loving and forgiving God that judges one on how they treat other people and live their lives rather then who they sleep with. I have a very hard time thinking that any God would be happy to see people spewing hate towards other humans at a funeral.
