What have I gone and done now...

Post by minks »

I said yes to a week of ski and golf. Ok I love to golf and am horrific at it to the point of throwing my clubs in frustration. Guess you would call it a love hate thing.

But skiing. OMG I must be on crack. I have lived in the ski mecca of Calgary all my life and have to be the only born and raised Calgarian who does not ski.

I have tried 2 times and must admit, sliding down an icey slope at break neck speed does not float my boat.

I am going with all avid skier's and it is costly and they have all the equipment and gear and I will be renting and looking more like a hack snowboarder badly dressed.

I wonder if I could just pass this all up and get drunk then falling down won't hurt as much.

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :yh_sick :yh_chickn :yh_clown :yh_ghost

as a long-time skier (and former ski racer) i would advise you to enter a beginners class and not try to keep up with your friends. you'll have fun in the class, ski at your own level, and learn the basics you need. you should not start on anyone's equipment , you need to rent appropriate shorter skiis for beginners. have fun! you can sit by the fire in the lodge and relax too. :)

I've been on skis once in my life, and had SOOO much fun rolling down hills and getting snow packed down my undies. I'm just not a winter sports kinda gal, I guess. If I'm not holding a fishing pole, a bow or a rifle, then forget it. So LC, why shorter skis for beginners?

Sitting by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate sounds about my speed....

Maybe a lesson is good but it is going to be a manic zoo as it is over easter break I would rather just um hang out solo elswhere while they are skiing ahahahaha

hey Babyrider....the longer the ski the faster and more difficult for a beginner to control and , most importantly, to come to a STOP! Minks... just stay on beginners slopes please! :)

She's not kidding. You really, really need a lesson. I started skiing t 5, my parent's owned a lodge at Vail in the 60's. Now Purgatory (Durango Mountain Resort) is just 45 inutes from my house. I grew up on it's slopes.. But....

After I got RA, I got as thin as a Holocaust survivor and couldn't ski for three years! I really feel like I'm strong enough now to go again this year, but I'm pretty spooked. It'll be back to the green trails again for me. (sigh)

This post has decided me. I'm going on the 20th!!! or die trying!!!

minks, the zoo atmosphere may work in your favor! If you do sign up for lessons, there will be so many people looking for lessons there with you that you may only get lessons. And never even get to make it to the beginner slopes. If you do make it to the beginner slopes there will be so many others that you may only have to go down once! Anyway, stay close to the lodge & those hot toddies, and enjoy yourself!!! :wah:

In our circle, we called it "Skiing the bar" as in: I'm gonna go ski the bar.

Everybody understood, nobody minded. At least in the crowd I went with.

One more ski tip in addition to LC's: Make sure you tell the person where

you get your skiis that you are a beginner and they adjust your bindings

accordingly, so that if you fall YOU WILL COME OUT OF THEM. Very important

preventative (well it helps!) against a broken leg.

I have one piece of advice:

Watch out for the bunny hill and if you fall make sure your ski comes off so they let you slide down the rest of the way on your butt.

thats two pieces of advice...but, that's all I have to say...Good luck.

Oh, guess I had one more thing to say.

MINKS, You can't be any worse than me on ski's. I could best be described as a "Kamikaze" skier. I jump off the lift, point them ski's down the hill, and scream till I reach the bottom.. IT'S NOT A PRETTY SIGHT.. :D

Golfing is not a sport I excel at either. Driving the cart for beer runs is my job. ;)

JUST HAVE FUN..
ALOHA!!

MOTTO TO LIVE BY:

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, champagne in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming.

WOO HOO!!, what a ride!!!"

Oh Minks .. I am soooo jealous.. golf is a great love hate game.. either you love it or hate it.. I love it.. used to work at golf courses in the club house cooking breakfast. That way I would get a free membership..and could be onthe first tee by 2pm.. hoo baby.. 6 handicap in those days... you will love skiing.. the new parabolic..(shaped skis) make turning sooooooeasy.. take a lesson and you will soon be sliding along to your hearts content... even better take a snowboard lesson and learn to surf the earth.. and now days.. because of the shaped skis no one rides long boards.. even racers are running on 160 to 165's... easier to control... you will have a great time.. apres ski .. hot tubs.. hooooo yeah

I'm so old school, I still have my solid metal HEAD skis, circa 1969. They're 195's, but I love 'em. State of the art bindings and boots, but the same old skis I've skied on all my life.

I saw a pair just like them the other day. On a restaurant wall.
