Are you a true American?

Post by BabyRider »

I know some of you are sick of my constant patriotic stance and views, but....oh well, here's another one:

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: It never occurred to you to be offended by the phrase, "One nation, under God."

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never protested about seeing the 10 Commandments posted in public places.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You still say "Christmas" instead of "Winter Festival."

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You bow your head when someone prays.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You stand and place your hand over your heart when they play the National Anthem.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You treat Viet Nam vets with great respect, and always have.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You've never burned an American flag.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You know what you believe and you aren't afraid to say so, no matter who is listening.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You respect your elders and expect your kids to do the same.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You'd give your last dollar to a friend.

Not to be antagonistic but being a true American allows for the opposite of all of those situations, in fact maybe more. People exercising their rights regardless of popular opinion is what its all about. That would include Nazi's, Ku Klux Klan, and puppy haters.

Well my point is that most of those things you stated would be accepted as American ideals, but the true American spirit allows for all degrees of beliefs. Whether we disagree or not, its the peoples right to display their patriotism in many ways. Thats what really makes us great.

Like the old saying goes. I disagree with you but Ill fight for your right to say it.

Puppy haters? PUPPY HATERS? No, they aren't TRUE Americans. My kind,

anyway, and that's the only kind I care about!

(I should add to this: That I understand what you're getting at,

Nomad, and while I would never burn our flag, I think one of the

things it stands for is a person's right to burn it!)

I understand what you're saying, Nomad, but to say the opposite of all those things could be true as well just doesn't sit well sith me. It's ok to disrespect your elders? It's ok to spit on returning vets? Not in my book.

As is your prerogative. It's also MY prerogative to appreciate messages like this, especially when I happen to agree with them. It also YOUR prerogative to poke fun, and have a laugh at someone else's expense, and to try and make someone feel ridiculous, but it is rather childish and stupid.

How could I not include them if they are American? Doesn't it say, right there, "AMERICAN"?

And by the way, I didn't write it, so who the author meant to include or not is known only by him/her.

I agree with all those things. Whether this makes me a true American, or just a person who respects a certain set of values, is anyone's interpretation. But I respect our vets, appreciate the values our country was founded on, have no problem with the phrase "one Nation, Under God" and try to treat everyone with respect.

*I see Gordon added the Native American component-oh ho, don't start me on that tangent...................*

I didn't say you made me feel ridiculous. I said you "try" to make me feel ridiculous. No, you don't have that type, or any other type, of power over me.

Why is it, that whenever I post something about being appreciative of my country and my pride at being an American, it turns into this sort of "oh that's propoganda crap" argument? It's incredibly frustrating. Why can't a person just be proud to be American without constantly having to defend that position?

How is it not "exactly" American? I take issue on any subject that I feel matters to me. I am tired of having to defend the fact that I am proud to be American.

Isn't it strange that jingoism has taken over from national pride and promotes national arrogance and contempt for other nations and peoples in North and South America.

To a Peruvian and to a Canadian the jingoists of the USA, are devoid of intellectual and reasoned argument, human respect and good manners, especially good manners.

Not only do they claim to be the only Americans, but they also claim to be the only ones with correct political opinions. Every other civilised American and every other civilised citizen of the world stands astonished at such crudity.

We all must become aware that any AMERICANS in big letters are only intellectually ignorant people, bound by superstitious reasoning, brainwashed by clever advertising, devoid of logical discussion and bereft of any respect for the rest of the human world.

In my lifetime, the epitome of arrogance has been stolen from the English aristocracy and now is invested in AMERICANS in capital letters.

Oh dear!

September 14, 2001

WHAT DOES BEING AN AMERICAN MEAN?

Being an American means enjoying more security, freedom and liberty than any other nation in the world. Being an American means supporting and defending American democracy and every democracy that supports America. Being an American means pledging allegiance to the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands.

Being an American does not mean coming to America to become an American for no other reason than to have the freedom to harm other Americans for profit. Being an American means to be free from those who come to America not to become Americans but to harm Americans on behalf of foreign powers.

Being an American means being educated and participating in democracy. Being an American means learning about American history and what it means to our survival. Being an American means re-examining ourselves in times of adversity and coming to no uncertain terms with those who threaten or undermine our freedom.

Being an American means trusting in the establishment of our Constitution "...to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity..."

Being an American means that we cannot abide any attack against our people or our country by any evil in the world. Being an American means that we must exact American justice against all those responsible for acts of terrorism against America up to and including the cowardly, heinous acts of war committed on September 11, 2001 in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.

What does it mean to be an American? It does not mean living in fear of terrorism. It does not mean living in a culture of social aggression, political rancor, legal anarchy, superficial selfish interests and media-driven chaos. And, clearly, it does not mean living in fear of terrorism. Being an American means living free, love of country and the constant effort to make it better. At this point in time it probably means that "we're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore."

However, there's something else about being an American that's disturbing, indeed, self destructive. Before the smoke of death had settled on the day of infamy, this American watched a troubling segment of a program that aired on public television. "History of the Future: Technology and the Global Village" contained a piece by a teenager about being American.

In the production a teenage girl skated around on her roller blades talking to people about what it means to be American. Her conclusion between each interview was to skate up to the camera, smile and say, "What does it mean to be an American or to be in America? Nothing! It's just a place where you live." Then she made the peace sign and roller bladed away.

Is that casual glibness our future? Considering the way our culture has eroded, maybe so. Meanwhile, this American wonders what America will do about this deeply seeded crisis, and what that young film producer thinks about being American now...

I understand what you mean BR and I agree. What makes this country great is as NOMAD stated being able to do just the opposite on all your point and even more. Does it make me happy that people burn our Flag. No it actually makes me sick to my stomach. This the USA freedom of speech is what were were founded on. What is it you don't understand? Being an American has nothing to do with the article you posted.

And the article I posted meant something to me and you tried to dismantle it and then called it stupid. I don't much care if you don't agree with it, or like it, or anything I post, for that matter. I'm simply saying that your reaction to it was childish, silly and ridiculous. You don't like it? Don't read it. What part of THAT is difficult to understand?

And you still neatly skirt the question of whom I insulted and what I'm trying to "pass this off as".

Goodnight Babyrider, do you not respond to others with your opinions? You are making way to much of all this. :)

Where in BRs post did she say that she disagreed with any of the text in this post? To me this is irrelevant, and hypocritical. Just like what she posted as her original post it was a matter of her opinion as is what you have posted here. But yet you bash her for what she had posted while you do the same. If you question your patriotism, then you have none to begin with.

That's the third time you've avoided a simple question put to you. Do you need it repeated yet again?

First of all, your first post was insulting when you quoted her original post and laughed at it.

Maxi_Uno wrote: Nobody is asking you to do anything. Your title of your thread reads "Are you a true American?" I don't agree with your article, it is a stupid article, it's insulting that you would even try to pass this on as such!:p

Maxi_Uno wrote: I delete that crap"E" mail right and left off my computer, tis nothing but "Propaganda". It is nothing but "Propaganda" and has little or anything to do with being "AMERICAN" let alone "Patriotic.":)

Secondly, these quotes not only insult her intelligence, but questions her patriotism for her country.

If calling someones thread stupid isnt bashing I dont know what is.
