Dont patronize me Maxi, Ive knocked peoples blocks off for less. And dont insult my intelligence either. You seem very egotistical, and quite frankly its an ugly attribute.
Morale of the story is, dont bash someones opinions and pass off your own as being the better one. Or do you not understand the freedom of speech? Freedom of speech works both ways, meaning you dont have the right to bash someones opinion, so in retrospect you shouldnt have even bothered posting if you didnt agree with it.

With respect there is a difference between being an American citizen and being a citizen of the USA. An American is anyone living between the Tierra Del Fuego and Greenland and the arctic wastes. Most Americans are not citizens of the USA.
There are other countries that are as freedom loving etc etc as the USA.
There are other countries that are governed with Christian principals and take care of the weak and poor and old and sick as Christians are supposed to do.
There are other countries that have every right to be proud of their country besides the citizens of the USA.
There are other countries that have a right to be proud of their support for peace and prosperity for all peoples.
To USA citizens, be proud of your nation, but be respectful of others.
Fight between yourselves if you must, but not on international forums.
Gordon.

Are you a true American?
With respects the last time I looked the name of the country we are discussing it was the United States of America. When did it become just America?
I've just counted 58 posts by 12 members of which only 2 represented the rest of the world.
Two of the members posted 34 posts between them, one posted 5 posts.
The remaining 9 members tried to bring some reason into the debate but were castigated with vigour.
To the 10 USA posters, I suggest that you try to assess the difference betwen jingoism and patriotism. It might also help if a couple of posters were not so confrontional and more reasonable and polite.
Take care,
Gordon.

In what way is this thread depicted as jingoism as opposed to patriotism? I would like to know how you think the people expressing their patriotism for their country(America - which is a widely used term describing the citizens of the United States - I dont know where you have been all your life.) are trying to convert foreign opinion to adhere with that of the post in this thread.
BR was just expressing her opinion of being an American, and was insulted by someone who tries to pass his/her opinion as being superior than everyone else's and proves to be rather arrogant. Which is hypocritical of the issue due to the fact that all of it is a matter of opinion.
No one pointed a gun to anyones head stating they must follow what was written in the original post in order to be a "True American, yet it seems people are threatened by this, which proves it is patriotism, rather than jingoism.

According to my Websters New World Dictionary,
Americanism is attachment to America as a place or a way of life.
Synonyms are patriotism, nationalism, provincialism, isolationism, flag waving, chauvinism, jingoism, America for Americans, America first.

Well, first off, what you have quoted me on here is what I aimed towards Gordon and his post talking about how he thought the thread was jingoistic.
And again I have told you, calling someones thread stupid directly insults the person who started it. What is your definition of attacked???

Oh yeah Maxi, and dont forget to be sure to not call someones thread stupid on matters of opinion and not so vaguely pass your own opinions as being superior to everyone elses.
Laughing doesnt help either.

I was online with this thread was first born, and thought about replying in somewhat of the above fashion because I think being an American is a lot more than what was posted. (Even though I have not the energy to make my own list)
Then I got to thinking BR's original post reminded me of the cutsey little emails you get from friends you rarely talk to anymore. You know....the ones that start out "you might be a true friend if....." or "you might be in love if......". The type of emails that just touch on a few aspects of the topic, just enough to make a slight point. Those usually touch a soft spot in someones heart and soul, which prompts them to "pass it on". That is what this reminds me of.
Then things got out of control as people start ripping words apart, and mixed with the jabs and sarcasm, turned out to be a crappy thread. I think our fore fathers would be rolling their eyes! Those were not BR's words, just a piece that she came across (or perhaps recieved via email) that inspired her and she passed it on.
There are bigger fish to fry than to tear apart a few written lines of one unknown author's pride.

You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You know what you believe and you aren't afraid to say so, no matter who is listening. We still have freedom of speech...in most cases.
You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You respect your elders and expect your kids to do the same. Again....this is just being a good human being, regardless of being an American.
You might be a TRUE AMERICAN if: You'd give your last dollar to a friend. I'm not that generous...but I'd give it to my kids...
Honestly, I have seriously considered moving to Canada....there is not a whole lot to be proud of in America anymore.
Actually, that's one of the great things of being an American, you have the right to move as soon as you like to!:)

Posting your views on the subject IS involving yourself. Sorry.
I cannot believe that this one little post, a forwarded email about taking pride in your country, has caused SO much BS.
I will continue to be proud to be American, and I will continue to post things like this that mean something to me, so all your petty bickering and lame argunments are falling on deaf ears. There is nothing wrong with being proud of my country, and I will continue to do so, regardless of who likes it and who doesn't.

I thought the same thing, someone who argues just for the sake of arguing, not really saying anything of substance. Just blathering on about nothing.

Are you Gods gift to clown spit, or do you just generally insult peoples integrity and come back with phrases like "O Please!"??
Rather ironic sentiment coming from an individual who stated this in the "It's Never Boring" thread :
Im 24, and I have been drunk and have started my fair share of rowdiness. Although it mainly consisted of kicking the sh!t out of assholes who deserved it

Well, it seemed that Mr.(?) Snyder has his (?) nose out of joint over one person supposedly belittling another's opinion, yet he (?) seems to have very little trouble putting the boots to anybody that he (?) determines is an a$$hole, at least while he (?) is under the influence of alcohol.

Snyder is a young man, full of p!ss and vinegar, and, I suspect, a LOT of testosterone. He also happens to be a brawler. Doesn't make him a bad person, and it still does not explain what one has to do with the other.
I know a lot of guys who like to fight, it's just how they are. What that has to do with this is beyond me.

If we take what he said at face value, he sometimes seems to appoint himself as judge, jury, and executioner when he's had a snootful. Yet, he gets annoyed when he perceives one person unfairly criticises another with mere words.
I think everybody's had the annoying experience of being called an "a$$hole" by a drunken lout, as we walk down a street, minding our own business. I hope none of us have had the same lout "kick the sh!t" out of us.
I know nothing of Mr. Snyder, except what he has implied on this forum. Let's imagine another young man (NOT Mr. Snyder) , full of p!ss and vinegar and testosterone and a seething hatred for blacks or gays or women or Asians or whomever...
Being an equal opportunity yobbo doesn't make a person any better, not in my book.
I'm not interested in picking on him, but I couldn't let the irony pass by.

So it's the irony that struck you. OK, that I can buy. However, I think you're making quite a stretch when you start talking about racially motivated attacks.
I've had the experience of being called an @$$hole and many other things by perfectly sober people, being drunk has nothing to do with anything, either.
This has gone so far off the deep end, it's not even worth commenting here anymore. People have taken a perfectly benign post and turned it into a war zone. It's absurd.
I said it before, several times, and I'll say it again here, one last time:
I will NOT be made to feel bad, silly, stupid, narrow-mided, prejudiced, racist or any other thing that has come up here because I am proud of my country. Period, end of sentence, next paragraph.

What Richard?
Give me a break.
I hate seeing people insult others by laughing at their thread and calling it stupid which, to me, is practically calling the person stupid. If you want to criticize me for fighting for what I believe in go ahead, but if you condone insults I would have no problem fn fighting you either.

Absolutely nothing, BR. It just means that you have a well-defined sense of right and wrong. I loved the piece. It's somehow not cool anymore to show some pride in your country, or even to be "American."
Not for me, I agreed with everything you said, everything you meant, and everything you left unsaid.
good job.
