Five illegal immigrants were arrested yesterday while working as cleaners in the Home Office department responsible for removing illegal immigrants.
The Nigerians were detained when they arrived for work at the Immigration and Nationality Directorate offices in central London.
The disclosure came three days after Dave Roberts, the Whitehall official responsible for removals, declared that he did not have the "faintest idea" how many people were in Britain illegally - or how many had been told to leave.
The Nigerians slipped through the net after being hired by a cleaning firm that sent them to Beckett House - the building that houses officials who are meant to be tracking down and removing hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants.
David Davis, the shadow home secretary, said: "It has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous when the Home Office's ability to catch illegal immigrants is so bad that they even manage to employ them as cleaners."
A Home Office spokesman said: "It is policy that all employees and contracted employees working in Immigration and Nationality Directorate buildings have security and employment checks carried out which include checks on their immigration status.
"Of course, we will investigate further and appropriate action will be taken."
Channel 4 News said that the immigrants were employed by Techclean, a Surrey-based firm that operates through a network of franchises.
Last night, there was no reply to calls to the company's headquarters near Farnham.

I understand the argument that there are jobs that Amerians don't want to do. (Now... if I was unemployed and starving, would there be anything I wouldn't do? no.)
But I've been thinking for some time that the solution to the illegal immigration problem isn't deporting millions of people and militarizing the border.
Instead, all we have to do is make it a felony to hire illegal immigrants.
No jobs, no illegal immigration. Simple.
