On a field trip to the bowling alley-a field trip-they stuck me with the nerds. I rolled a strike right away, with gutter balls. It impressed them! But I knew I stunk at bowling!

I have been playing golf for 45 years and there are days when I think the game really sucks and then there are days where I think I should seek out the Senior Tour. Even the Pros are inconsistent. Their inconsistency is just at a higher level. I shot the best round of my life two weeks ago. A 74 on a Par 70

Championship Course. I missed shooting my age by three strokes. My handicap now is 16.5, so the 74 was really outstanding for me. I was brought back to reality two days later, shooting 88.

I have never been able to hit a golf ball in my life. I mean, come on...I have hand-eye coordination, I can shoot pool very well, I can shoot skeet, I can group a dozen arrows in a cigarette pack at 20 yards without sights on my bow. WHY can't I make contact with the head of that driver and a golf ball???? Makes no sense to me, so I quit trying....

I would really like to get in to golf, but from my own experience as of so far, it is rather expensive. I mean a really good set of golf clubs cost at the least no less than $400. I have been going to the driving ranges with a 7 iron I have. Being a high school athlete I enjoy playing any sport(and I do mean anything that involves athleticism and competition). I miss being the star of all my School sports teams, but due to me breaking my ankle playing football, I have never been able to recover my agility that allowed me to excel in all the sports Iplayed and loved:-1 . So hopefully sometime soon I will be able to overcome this money hurdle and start playing golf on a regular bases.

Try looking at the want ads for those selling used sets. I see them in this area for $150 to $200, including bag, or consider not a set initially, but buying clubs separately-----a driver 1, a seven iron, 4 iron, wedge & putter. Should be able to get those for less than $100. This will get you started. Municipal Golf Courses are the least expensive to play in most parts of the country and generally have different kinds of passes and discounted monthly fees.

Yeah but I heard a really good set of golf clubs is all the difference in the world when it comes to actually playing. I trust you know a good set when you see one but I dont. I would like to swing something better than a tree limb.

And where I live it costs around $50 for 18 holes. Unless I want to drive to the inner city golf course and take a chance on getting shot and robbed.

Initially, until you get the hang of the game, you will not really need a great set of golf clubs. While great equipment is necessary for the pros, most equipment hype for amateurs is between the ears.

Greens Fee rates are high in your area. Here, in my part of California you can play any number of Muni Courses for around $12.

K if your starting out you dont want to spend a lot of money on clubs. Find out if you really like it 1st. I got a set from Target and the ball took a big chunk out of one of the irons, so dont go cheap cheap but my next set came from a golf expo, everyone was hawking their goods for a fair price. Theres nothing wrong with a set from a garage sale like Lon said either.

I tried it on a whim 3 yrs ago and fell in love with the sport right away.

Give it a shot.

Good luck.Why do you love it? I ask because my brother loves it but couldn't explain why. I'd give it another chance if I thought it was worth it, if for no other reason than a chance to bond with my brother.

I love all sports and anything that challenges me on a physical level. I have grown to like to play golf(from the driving ranges of course). But mainly I like it because when I decided to give it a shot after telling myself that the more physical sports I am going to have to let go, because my ankle just cant hold up when I stop on the dime and try what used to be a lightning crossover(Basketball). I was playing pool, but found that the pool rooms were a bit too depressing for me, so I have taken an interest in golf. After hitting a few balls after purchasing my first 7 iron, swinging the club was second nature to me after carrying the highest batting average on my baseball team my freshman year. Even the guy at the driving range couldnt believe Ive never played golf......I was a natural- like everything I do involving sports....what can I say, Im an athlete, and will always love ALL sports.

With all due respect, you are not playing golf. You are hitting golf balls on a driving range. Playing golf involves getting out on an 18 hole course and trying to finish the round as close to par as you can. That means hitting your ball on uneven lies, out of sand, across water, out of tall grass, into the wind, the rain. Putting the ball on fast greens, slow greens, uphill, downhill, sidehills. That would be the test of your athletic ability, not just hitting balls at the driving range with a 7 iron. Any non athelete can do that.

With all do respect, If you could hit the ball straight you wouldnt have to hit the balls in the conditions you have illustrated. Which adds to my assumption that you wont be on the pro tour anytime soon.

I was expressing the fact that I enjoy it as a game. You mean to tell me that I dont have the right to say I have a likeness for golf because I have only hit balls from a driving range? If so, I tell you that you are wrong, and that when faced with being challenged I enjoy it even further. I have a never quit attitude in anything I commit myself to, and have to say no matter how hard it is I will - and I do mean will - overcome it........and enjoy it.

I have played golf for 40 years and at age 71 carry a 11 handicap. Yes you have the the right to say you like golf, but you said you were playing golf and that my friend is a wee bit different than hitting golf balls. BTW --I still manage to get 245 yds off the tee with 90 accuracy.

I played golf in New Zealand with a 30 year old Korean that was there on a golfing holiday for six weeks. He was playing 36 holes a day 6 days a week.

He had top notch equipment and it was obvious that he had had lessons. He was also very athletic but was not scoring well at all, in fact, he was pretty bad. He had only been hitting golf balls on a driving range for 5 years and had never played the game for real. As an ex athelete of some note myself, I took exception to your comment as having PLAYED GOLF & I repeat, you were merely hitting golf balls, not playing golf.

Well, there are a few reasons. Its good to get out with guys once in awhile. I dont do that much anymore and everybody is usually pretty relaxed so its fun.

Also the greens themselves kind of take you away. Once you step on a course its like your in a different world, very peaceful and isolated.

And you can have a really crappy day with the clubs but when you hit that one ball in the sweet spot and it flies just right, thats enough to motivate you to get better. I find it challenging on many levels and since its something that you can always improve at, you will always be challenged. Give it a whack.

Lon, if you had noticed I specifically said "played golf - from the driving ranges of course" I never once said I had played golf on a golf course. And again, having said this as a means of expressing my likeness for the sport, I take exception of being questioned about my enthusiasm for the game just because I havnt played as long or at the same level as you. I wouldnt say I have a passion for it more than you either. What I am saying is I like the sport from my limited experience. I dont see why this offends you.

My point Im trying to make is, would you say that someone who is shooting free throws is not playing basketball?

It was a figure of speech, in which I tried to explain that it was only from the driving range.

"I like shooting free throws".

Someone shooting free throws is doing exactly that, shooting free throws. They are not playing basketball.

Someone reading a chess manual is not playing chess, they are reading a chess manual.

Someone hitting baseballs is not playing baseball, they are hitting baseballs.

I disagree.

Football players going through football drills are still playing football, just to a different extent. Fundementals are apart of the sport itself, but for the sake of the arguement I will say it is a matter of opinion then, and should be left at that.

Golf is a great sport, I try to play whenever I can. We are very lucky that we have some nice courses around where I live, and they are really cheap, and although being public courses are very well maintained. Not only can you have a lot of fun playing, but get good exercise as well. But getting stuck in a bunker, well that's a different story, and I've had some nasty times in there let me tell you!! :wah:
