French fries......

Post by K.Snyder »

I have been sitting here thinking about certain snacks I prefer over many, and have come to the conclusion that I have a particular interest in french fries. Then I realized it is really hard to find a good french fry.

I suppose my question really targets us americans, due to the fact that I wont be flying over seas to buy french fries(unless they are really really good!).

I would like to know what french fries you think are the best (store bought of course), and where you get them, that anyone in the U.S has the means to get. I have yet to find store bought french fries that I like, let alone can stand.

So does anyone have a french fry seceret?

Haven't found any at the store that I like... Mickey D's are my fave

but I only get them a couple times a year.

I've made them at home with varying amounts of success, the best

way is supposed to be a "twice fry" brown them a little, remove

them and then re-fry. It's quite a lot of work.

Used to have deep fat fryer with a basket, and that was really a heep.

But not much call to do them so it's back to a reg fryer for me.

Favorite french fry? Rally's by far. Spicy and crispy outside, not really "mealy" inside. You don't even need ketchup. Second choice is McDonald's. I despise and loathe thick, fat fries, (also known as "steak fries"), never crispy enough no matter where you get them and always dry and mealy inside.

Save yourself Val, and RUN!

Just RUN!

Dont ask questions, just RUN!

Omg Rallys is soooo GREASY!

I throw up everytime I eat there. I have ate there about 5 times that I can remember. I kept thinking that it was a fluke thing and kept trying to eat there but its like a vicous circle.....its worse than White Castle.

But BR is right, they have the best fries.

No one can top Rallys fries...

they should rename Rallys to" Rally and get some more fries cause everything else will make you puke".

I slice my potatoes on a mandolin less than a quarter inch thick. Then I fry them in a skillet of hot oil till brown. Then immediatley season them after they have come out of the skillet.

Could be an eastern only place. All I know is their fries are the epitome of what a fench fry should be. As for the rest of their food, well, that's a crap-shoot, depending on the location. But the fries are consistently the best anywhere, in my humble opinion.

I normally cut & fry my own, in peanut oil. Then, right out of the pan, add salt, pepper, celery salt, garlic powder, & old bay. I top them with monterey jack or cheddar cheese & bacon pieces, & put them in the oven, just to melt the cheese. Then I have ranch dressing for dipping. YUMMY!!! I kind of tried to copy Lonestar's fries, because to me, they have the BEST! I do, however, love Mickey D's fries! But I try to stay away from that place.

BTW BR, never heard of Rally's & I live in the east. Where is it?? And I LOVE my fries soft. ;)

I love any kind of french fries! :yh_drool

Home made are the best, fried or baked! For baking I just put olive oil and salt on them, SO good!

With frozen ones I just season them to death and throw 'em in the oven. :D

Since we do not eat fries at home, not sure about storebought, But I like McDonalds the best of the fast food joints. Also around here there is a local chain called Bill Grey's which makes a good French Fry.

Another good fry comes from Zebb's. Not sure if that is a local place, or a national chain. Anyone else ever hear of Zebb's?

Ohh!!! I like Ruby Tuesday's! It's the only one of those nice restaurants my hometown has! Never had their fries, though.

The Lonestar I spoke of earlier is Lonestar Steakhouse. Anybody else ever hear of it??

Good grief you poor deprived culinary philistines. french fries are those pathetic stick like things you get in MacDoanalds and can only be appreciated by someone who does not know better.

Now chips, that is the correct term, are best served in newpaper made with proper slices of potato, so thick they go splat if you drop them on he floor, with lots of nippy brown sauce and a nice bit of cod, although personally I prefer a white pudding although a haggis supper does as well but you need to be careful who makes it, black puddings don't appeal so much-not being as bloodthirsty as some of my compatriots and that tends to be more the north of England fare where they also put vinegar on them as well yeugh!. Best chippie the L'aquila Bianca in stockbridge althouigh Bratisannis is not too bad either all washed down with a swig of irn bru-none of that effeminate coke stuff you get in macdonalds.

See what I mean, that "store bought fries" are hard to find.

Rallys is in Ohio, so Im sort of thinking that its a regional thing. I beleive Wendys is too, but Im not sure. All I know is, is that Rallys fries are the best I have ever had from a "fast food joint", but considering I dont eat that greasy stuff no more, I am on the hunt to find a very good store bought frozen bag of fries that I would like. So, far I am going to try a few tips, as to home made fries, that you have all given....

thanks.

No sorry chaps. those limp wristed droopy things you call french fries are but a pale imitation of the real thing. Along with deep fried pizza and mars bars they're a part of our national contribution to world cuisine.

It is disgusting. My first taste of pizza was a deep fried one as a kid. It wasn't until years later as an adult I had another-now I love them but I still remember that first godawful experience.

Hershey? is that not a chocolate bar or something?

You HAVE TO have pizza from a hot brick oven!! OOZING with mozarella!!!! MAN! I'm making myself hungry!! Think I'll have to run down the the pizzaria at lunch.

I'd take a Hershey bar over a Mars bar anyday & we have a Mars factory about 10 miles away too. Also, Hershey owns Reeses & there's one of THOSE on my way home, as well! Good thing I'm not a chocoholic!!

Well, I have taken the advice of some in here, and I have made some home-made fries(chips to you "bloaks").

I have to say, not only am I hooked, but I dont think I will ever eat another potato chip from a bag in my life. I know we are talking about fries, but chips(American bag) compared to home-made fries are, in my opinion horrible. They taste over cooked, dry, and greasy. I dont even think I will ever eat another fry that isnt home-made ever again either. Soo much of a difference.

No just plain......with salt obviously.

You can really taste the difference between home-made fries and those godawful, grease infested, over cooked, non potato tasting things that happen to be called french fries as well.
