If you guys hate Mcdonalds so much, why do you let them franchise all over the world? Why do a few, who dont like their food, try to dictate to others, who do? Just stop eating there. Dont get me wrong, I just dont understand the fuss.

Read the post, McDonalds sued them for libel not them suing McDonalds, the point of the case is that they were denied a fair trial in English law. It means the law of libel will have to be changed.

They don't try and dictate what you eat they are pointing out what it is you are eating. So as you sit down to your gentically modified cereals and your hormone packed meat just remember in the UK they have to label what is in the food. People boycott establishments like McDonalds if they disagree with the way they produce their food that is why McDonalds were trying to shut them up and why they have had to change their menus and are frantically trying to change their image.
It's a free country people can eat there if they want just as they can take on a franchise if that's what they want to do. The point about the case is that english libel law meant that a big corporation like McDonalds can use libel laws to stop people criticising unfair or illegal practices, as it stands the libeller has to prove all claims beyond reasobable doubt, if a wrong in any aspect they lose,
The high court judge found that some of the leaflet's claims - that the company was to blame for starvation in developing countries, for example, and that its food caused cancer - were untrue.
But he also found McDonald's "culpably responsible" for animal cruelty and that it exploited children through its advertising.
The judge also found that McDonald's paid low wages, but that the company had been libelled because other aspects of the material were defamatory.
McDonalds were awarded £60,000 in damages, the case has cost them £10 million in costs not to mention the public relations disaster.
McDonalds have had to change their menus and are losing business
It's a victory for freedom of speech. I suggest you go away and read the post properly and next time you wander in to McDonalds wonder how the stuff is produced and what's in it. Stiil eat if you want but you have a right to know what you're eating and I would suggest you should worry why McDonalds don't want you to know

I've always preferred Burger King anyway.
What about GM crops? The US complain about eec labeling requirements on foodstuffs claiming they are anti competitive-the eec want all gm grain prioducts clearly identified as such and object to it being mixed in with non gm
http://www.genewatch.org/WTO/WTO_background.htm
http://www.genewatch.org/CropsAndFood/b ... tm#Brief25
After BSE and salmonella etc, as you are no doubt aware, food content is a touchy subject. There is a similar conflict about importing US beef that has had hormones added to it. Speaking personally I hope we ban the stuff altogether or label it properly so it can be avoided
You have a british flag so your point of origin was unknown and this is not US versus europe-at least so far as I am concerned. You do (americans I mean) seem more trusting of your food producers. It gets portrayed as an EEC anti US dispute when in actuality the hostility to this kind of stuff in europe is very much a grass roots affair. If these food imports are labelled GM or hormone enhanced consumers won't touch them.
If they are labelled clearly in the US why is it such an issue that we want them labelled when importing them?
There was a mass boycott of GM crops to the extent most of the surpermarkets have had to withdraw products that were GM from their shelves.
Our farmers don't want to be tied to buying GM seeds either.
Given the track record of companies like Monsanto would you trust them?
I am a bit touchy though, if these things are so good then why try and disguise what they are in? That's the way it comes across-why do biotech companies object to the stuff being labelled unless thay are trying to hide something or they are afraid that given a choice people will boycott their produce. That would probably be the case in europe, consumer power at it's best.

My best guess is simply greed. I'm of a like mind as yourself when it comes to gm food. As far as americans being too trusting, yep. Or blind. I personally think governments have gone too far. Now they are tampering with our food. They mess with our health by saying nuclear energy is good. Well tell that to the folks at Chernobyl. Tell the Union Carbide victims of India that big corporations care. We're being exterminated slowly by our own governments greed. First comes pasteurization, not to mention all the chemicals they pump into our water supply to 'purify' it. Now comes genetically altering our food because the poison of fertilizers didnt work fast enough. Have you seen the GM turkeys? They cant even stand on their feet because of the large 'breast' bit they altered just so they would have more white meat. It's disgusting. It's immoral. I just wonder what the long term effects of all this tampering will come to. It's even riskier to be a vegetarian these days. Tomatoes were the first to be genetically altered, I believe. Next came the corn and soy. When Americans begin to be born with green hair, then you'll know the effects of miracle grow! LOL! Land of the jolly green giants!

McDonaklds takes on more than it can chew
My wife always gets mad at me when I eat at Mc Donalds.
I tend to go when they have the $1 big macks. Been about a year since they had that.
Also got hooked on their breckfast by playing Mc Lotto as I wone numerous free breckfasts.
When they first came out with breckfast I was thinking Mc Donalds is not breckfast food.
And I actually usually being a former nightshifter would eat the breckfast for supper. Prior to meeting my wife.
I think there having $1 movies is intresting. Will the peolpe rent the movies and get food. Is the $1 movie a loss leader?
As for the statement if you don't like it don't eat it. That is essesentially Dollar Votes. Yet we all pay higher insurance prices when others make poor lifestyle choices. Yes affer the smokers they came against fat and then CARBS!!!! And when there is no life style choice to go after they will discriminate agianst people with bad jeans. They will tell us we can't get insurance for cancer because we have the cancer gene.
No company is perfect. And there is nothing wrong with people putting out leafelets against something. All countries should have freedom of speach!!!! I certainly do not have it at work. Pehaps that is why I go on these fourms.
No one should be punished for what they say. What they say should stand on it's merit. I don't agree with what Churchill said about 911 but he should not be fired for it.
I remember when talk was cheap.
