Due to the fact that people arnt going to want to read through all of this thread to then post about the World Cup as it is being played, I am going to make a game time thread for the World Cup so that people may talk about the event as it is underway.

We are continuing to progress in the soccer world. Alot of critics say this ranking is due in large part to our success in the CONCAF, and that teams' ranks are for the amount of wins and success you have had in the tournaments leading up to the World Cup, as opposed to the quality of the wins itself.

You know what I say to them.......

Phoooo- ee

Up yours!

But here is to a hopeful end to the USA and the World Cup......Which in my eyes is to win it all. Im not going to be disappointed the least bit if the USA doest meet up to their expectations carried over from the 2002 World Cup, because after all, its a new Cup and anything can happen. Being an athlete myself, I know that going out and doing the best you can, and having fun at the same time is whats really important. Winning is just an extenuation of what should be enjoyable in sports, in my own opinion, so I see no reason to demand success from anyone when it come to friendly competition.

Go USA!

maybe we should lend out support to the real underdogs in all of this the USA.:yh_smiley After all they don't leave home very often and they're in a foreign country -goodness knows what they thought of the germans in leiderhosen and being told they are in for a good drubbing when the south americans get hold of them must be freaking them out. Not being able to stop every fifteen minutes while the adverts are on must be very tiring for the poor dears.

joking aside-does the world cup get much air time in the US? World wide it looks set to top all previous sporting events in terms of audience figures.

Don't believe all you read in the press. It's hard to not get cught up in the atmosphere. besides We're all fed up with 1966 reruns and the constant going over what went wrong if you lose doesn't bear thinking about.

Of course.

All of the games, I believe will be televised, and all that its considered, alot of Americans will be watching.......even those who dont take a particular interest in soccer, due in large part that its simply the USA team.

I, being American, have watched the first two games of the World Cup, and given my daily schedule, will continue to watch as many games as possible. Of course, I will watch every game of the USA, and upon any question as to if I will catch the USA games, I will improvise. But none the less, I am still excited about all of the World Cup, and always will be.

I know you want them to win,...I wouldnt dare question your enthusiasm for the USA team. I too have pondered the possibility of the USA not being able to win the World Cup this year, it being outweighed by the evidence of past experience. By looking at such, I know it will be a hill to climb, and dont say for one minute that the USA can win it easily(aside from joking), but dare admit my opinion of such a tough hill to climb as being impossible driven by my optimism.

We all have to show faith....

I know that the USA isnt exactly a dominate threat in the World Cup. While Im always optimistic about my favorite teams, I am still not blinded by a biased opinion toward the realistic possibilities they have.

Just wanted to know what you guys thought about the Czhechs. Like I said USA isnt exactly a force to be rconed with, but they are still a team in the hunt. What im really trying to say is, I thought that the Czech Republic looked extremly fierce.....I dont know if thats because they beat us, or that they are really good, but one thing is for sure, they shouldnt be counted out of the 2006 World Cup by any means.

Your thoughts.

TRhe Czechs have been there or thereabouts for some time - they won't win but they'll give a good account of themselves.

Well I wouldnt have wanted to watch the Czech vs USA game on univision then, because their "goal" would have been my "hands on top of head in a slumped position, saying to myself - G@* &*$%, $()^ ()% @ %!+&(-) "....

I'm loving the tournament so far! There have been some great games already and some amazing goals.

I thought USA would have done better against the Czechs but maybe they will redeem themselves against Italy. However, I don't see them beating Italy to be honest. Sorry!

England need to play a lot better if they want to actually win the cup. If I'm honest they will probably get knocked out in the quarters (ever the optimist me! :wah: ).

Ecuador have been a real surprise and Spain and Argentina look to be on fire this time round. Although they may have peaked too early. have to wait and see :-3 .

Ha!

As if getting through to the next round for the USA wasnt hard enough, upon having to beat Ghana at the same time Italy has to beat the Czechs, the next round finds the Group E winner playing second place of Group F, and visa versa.

You guys know what that means?

It means that if by some chance that we(the USA) does happen to make it out of the group stage, we would then be in second place of group E, which in turn plays the winner of group F. Considering that Brazil has a strangle hold on winning Group F, Brazil would have to lose their next game by more than 4 at the same time Australia(or whom ever has to win by a margin higher than that of Brazils' goals against = Highly unlikely).

So even if the USA does qualify for the next round, we would then have to play the record holders for most World Cup victories with five, Brazil.

We're not talking miracles anymore....

We're talking an Omen.

Let's hope we can overturn our poor record against the Swedes, but Six is right, it doesn't really matter as we're through to the knockout stages already. I know the outcome determines if we play Ecuador or Germany in the next round, but both games would be difficult at that stage.

Will be good to see a performance now the pressure is temporarily off

Wanted to ask everyone what their thoughts were on the length between World Cups. I personally find four years to be quite a long time. I realize that such a long time for preparation adds to the build up of anticipation, and passion not only for the players to want to succeed, but for the fans' enthusiasm as well.

Anyone not mind the long wait, or is there anyone who would like to see the World Cup every two years or so??

Seems like an awful long time for only one month of events, and im sure that the players would like to play in it as much as possible.....considering that some players get to be too old in the years leading up to the next World Cup.

Any thoughts?

Any thoughts?Surely every 2 years would put a strain on the players?

We also have the European tournament to consider.

Also, the majority of players are from premiership clubs and they are the ones that pay their fat salaries,

I for one dont want Rooney or Ferdinand out next season due to injuries from the world cup.

Wow..

really?

Hmmmm....

I suppose you are right. I never had considered the injury aspect of the game.

I being one who played sports always looked forward to the all-star games. Players dont really think about getting injured, although I have never been fortunate enough to be payed millions of dollars, athletes love to play in an overwhelming atmosphere. I would personally love to play every two years at the least. Four being acceptable, one being an honor. I do suppose the fans are what really counts, after all, passion for the game is an added incentive as is winning, to go along with heritage and tradition of course.

In my anticipation for todays World Cup games, I have been looking over soccer/football footage, and had noticed someone scoring a goal while being behind the line of off-side, although the ball was struck by the opposing team toward the goal.

I wanted to know if off-side is negated upon the ball being struck by the opposing team. So, perhaps those of you who are more enveloped(right word?) in the game of soccer/football can shed some light on this?

The attacking player is not offside when that happens. It's the defending teams stupid fault. Remember an attacking player is offside when the ball is played by the attacking team and he is behind the defence.

There are some great games on at the moment. Ghana are 1-0 against USA (oh dear!) and Italy are 1-0 against Czech Rep. So at the moment the Czechs and USA are out but this group is so close it can all change so quickly! It's by far the most exciting group! :-6

Half

Ghana 2

USA 1

Im disgusted at the half. I honestly dont know much about soccer, but one thing is for sure, and thats I feel cheated somehow. If it were a foul, fine, but for some reason im just not convinced that penalty kick was justifiable. They were both going up for the ball, and while I will admit there was some contact, in my opinion it was just another play for ball control. I could be wrong I guess.

Also, however, I feel that ball should have been played differently. USA defense is making careless mistakes, and its costing them.....us.....dearly.

I remain optimistic as usual.

No I think you're right. That penalty decision seemed very harsh and there was nothing in it really. Especially at the end of the half. Dempsey's goal was impressive though.

Well, I think its safe to say it really wouldnt have mattered. The difference in this game, and in my opinion the entire World Cup, for USA was their mistakes on defense. I enjoyed the World Cup, and will continue to watch as many matches as I can, with not nearly as much enthusiasm, but none the less am curious who will be victorious this year.

Having said that, I say good luck to the rest of you.

I will be rooting for the team that is down by a goal. :wah:
