But actually, not MY car this time. Part of my work with Kim, the lady with Cerebral Palsy I work with, is to help facilitate her being more independant, and doing things on her own, rather than having her mom do things for her.
So, today we went to bring her van in for a routine oil change. Should take about 40 minutes, they say. So, finally, after a lengthy wait, someone comes out and says the two words you do not want to hear..."Bad news..."
Seems the antifreeze lines were a bit rusted, so they and another small part would need to be replaced. For about $400. I will say, I was impressed that they let HER come out to the service bay to look, so they could explain it all. She asked me to come with her.
After we looked, and pretended we knew exactly what they were talking about, we stepped aside...I wanted to make sure she had enough $$ in her checking account, as I knew she would not want to use her credit card if she did not have to. She said she did have plenty, and went over to approve the work. Which, by the way, they said would take about an hour and a half more to fix.
Here lies the problem...I had to leave. Rick and I commute to work, and I would have to leave to pick him up..and my car was at Kim's house.
So, I got shuttled to her house, explained the situation to her mom, who then rode back to the garage with me to wait with Kim, to drive her home.
All is well now.:-3

I guess cars in the US are different to the ones we get here.
WTH are antifreeze lines?

OK, I will explain like I know what the heck I am talking about.
They are the lines, it seems whuch help run the engine coolant from the radiator through the engine.
OK, maybe one of the men here needs to answer...as we all know you guys were born with the car gene that allows you to know all about engines.:driving:

On our cars these are made of rubber and cost about £5.

In my mind, Bryn Mawr's bringing up a good point: why should replacement anti-freeze lines cost more than a few dollars? Was the more expensive repair job due to some idiosyncracy of that particular car, or did the lady simply get taken to the cleaners? :-3

OK, here is the deal. They were not large rubber hoses, that attach to the radiator from the top or just under. From what they showed us, they were a set of two or 3 metal lines about this big around ( ) that were rusted out. They ran underneath the chasse from the front to about the middle of the car. Not sure what they attach to what, but the whole works needed to be replaced.
The total bill, for the lines, and the oil change she went in for was about $485.
She has used this place for years, as her family has also, so she knows she is not being taken for a ride. She was laughing because everything seems to happen at this time of year..as she is planning on going away for vacation. Last year, same time, one of the power steering lines was recalled, and they had to go in to replace it. Just a couple of weeks back, another problem, still with power steering. So they replaced all the lines for free, under the recall from last year.
Monday we are taking it in to get the brakes fixed. I tild her she has to stop going on vacation. They are bad luck.:-3

Sounds like they may be more like "Transmission Cooling Plumbing lines". Some vehicles have pencil size diameter "metal" lines that run between the Transmission Cooler and the Radiator to keep the Transmission cooled. In this case, all the lines that lines go to the radiator doesn't mean they're antifreeze lines. :-2 Hope this may help a bit.

Thanks, cars. Could be that they used the "antifreeze" terms so Kim would understand better.
