Geneology, anyone?

With 4,000+ members, someone here must be interested in Geneology.

I wasn't that concerned about it until now.

I have some Army medals that I got a couple of years ago and they are supposed to by my Grandfather's.

I am doing ok so far. I still don't know anything about my Grandfather's military service, but I have some great info on him, have found out the name of his parents and have information on his brothers and sisters that I didn't have a while ago.

I have found out that my Great-Grandfather was born in Belgium, but I don't speak Dutch so going further my be a bit problematical.

Anyone else do this? Anyone that has been doing it for more then 6 hours that might have some advice, great links (that don't cost a small fortune to join) or other information, words of encouragement, etc?

My cousin spent several years doing the complete history of our grandfathers side of the family. Our dad's were brothers. Found out lots of interesting things about the family.

I actually signed up for that one by the month. I am really hoping that I can find out enough from there in the first month that I can fill in the gaps from other places. At $30 a month, it is not an expense I can afford for too long!

Oh - does anyone know where I can find old copies of newspapers from small towns ? I have a friend who is looking for a very specific day from a paper in a small town in Pennsylvania.

Go to www.ancestry.com

Join a mailing list with your families' name. IE (Joliwhosaphitz) You can ask a question as in "looking for parents or siblings of Julio, born in Bolivia 1918."

This is free.

I found my grandfather and back to his greatgrandfather.

I would do a search for the name of the town, check to see if you can find the number of thier newspaper, or library. You could probably get one there.

According to the 1930 Census, Great Grandpa spoke Dutch.

That and a name is about all I've got about his pre-U.S. life.

Three of my grandparent came through Ellis Island. My grandfather on my dad side was from Scotland he was suppose to be on the Titanic got bumped good for me I would say..

My mother parents were from Poland. I will check out these site to see if I can find out more..

I e-mailed my cousin yesterday and she sent me my Aunt's e-mail address. This should help a lot!

Seems that Great Grandpa's last name may not have even started with a W when he was in Belgium!! That puts a whole new spin on things! It never occurred to me that we would be traversing the alphabet! Silly me.

I will keep you updated. This is kind of fun. Who knew?

Oddly enough the Mormons might be able to help.

The maintain the International Geneological Index whichy can be accessed free - try http://www.familysearch.org/

You can also access the cencus results 100 years after they are published.
