Help giving up smoking: one for the women here
I have discovered another book written by Allen Carr aimed specifically at women on the basis that they have different concerns to men. On the same format as "The Only Way To Stop Smoking Permanently" which was published in 1995, the one for women is called "Allen Carr's Easy Way For Women To Stop Smoking" published by Penguin in 2002.
Hope this helps. I am buying the former book and shall let you know if it works.

I asked for "The Patch" for my birthday. Which is Saturday. That means I have 5 days left to smoke. I finally WANT to quit, which has been the deterrent all along, so hopefull this will do it. If it doesn't, or I start packing on weight, I'm going right back to it, and I may be in need of one of those books. Wish me luck!!!! :yh_nailbi

I have an aunt who is giving up smoking. Hum should invite her to the garden.
Anyway, she came up for her class reunion and she was quitting then and the last words my Grandmother said to her was that she smelled so good.
My grandmother died a few weeks later. My aunt started smoking again because of the stress about that; but, she still plans on quitting.

Hio, Lotto. Please accept my belated sympathies for you concerning your Grandmother.:-1
I can understand your Aunt starting smoking again. The slightest thing can start me smoking again. My Mum died over twenty years ago when I was barely thinking about giving up smoking. But I'm glad your aunt is still going to try to quit.

PS, some interesting sigs. I like the lemons sigs.

I did, but, contrary to the book's instructions, I kept thinking about having a smoke. It's a psychological egg that I need to break. I haven't taken in the book's explanations on this particular subject. I still recommend the book though.

Don't put it off if you can. Cigarettes destroy the body and when it starts to notice, it is too late.

Thanks Cher. But I now know the extremes that people will go to before they stop smoking. Some don't stop until they have no arms left to smoke with. The ads on TV are based on the truth. It should scare me, and it does, but that's the power of the addiction.

My boyfriend is wanting to quit, but lately has been smoking more. He never smokes around me and doesn't talk about it. I only know because I can smell it despite his efforts to cover it up. What I have trouble understanding is the psychological part. what goes on in your mind, or mood that makes you smoke. I am sure it might vary from person to person, but I am curious to know what does it for you.

It is like a crutch. Problems arise, get the fags out, as if they'll sort it. Smokers think that a fag will help them to think it through. But, depriving the brain of oxygen does the opposite.
The idea of life without a crutch is scary. Although, most smokers claim that this is not so and will actually say that they enjoy the taste. Try eating it, it burns the throat and the tongue.

The reason he says he would want to quit is only for hygiene purposes. I guess I want to know what he is thinking so much that he will smoke 4 or 5 in a 2 hour period sporadiclly.
I dont need to know what he is thinking all the time...but since it is never done around me or talked about with me...it is something I feel excluded from. I dont know if I should care or how to feel about it. Maybe it is not a big deal at all and just something personal he does. Any comments?

Be grateful that he doesn't smoke around you. Apart from the harm to you from the smoke, it is still addictive smoked secondarily. Don't pressurize him. But if he says he's trying to stop, give him your full support. Help him to prepare because it takes a lot of mental preparation. The most important mental prop is 'knowing' that he doesn't need another cigarette. 'knowing' in this way is a very important psychological tool that frees a person from cigarettes along with knowing how and why cigarettes hook people.
Very few people survive smoking. Those that do are rare exceptions and not the rule. Do care, but don't be critical. It'll just start a rift between you both.

Okay. I will do my best. he does not talk about it to me, but if he does I will be supportive and open. to be honest I am not sure he really wants to quit...but i will not say that to him. Thanks for the advice.
