Which Country has the Best Cuisine? (thats fancy cooking to you and me)

Post by Galbally »

I know these food threads are hugely popular, and I'm sure this one has been done, but I would like to know which one is people's favorite and why? Mine is Japanese, and I was just thinking about Sushi, which is why I started this, but there are loads of them. I'm thinking Italian would be popular, Chinese, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Greek, French, Lebanese, Morrocan, etc. I noticed that Portuguese Chicken Restaurants have become very popular in London, I wonder whats next?

I havnt really thought about my favorite food categorized from its own origin really. My favorite food is spaghetti, but I honestly couldnt say that Italian food is my favorite. Simple fact is, I like all foods, obviously if prepared right. From time to time I like Chinese food, but only from Chinese restaurants.....lets face it they know how to cook their own type of food(Im not a very good cook anyway). To be honest I havnt really tried very many other types of food. My mother grew up in a German family, so myself growing up I was raised on mashed potatoes, roasts, vegetables and chicken, but if given the chance I wouldnt mind trying exotic foods--as long as its not sushi im good to go.(I dont like the idea of trying different types of meat--deer is about as exotic as I get when it comes to that--no dog...none of that craziness--no ty.

I'm not sure that you could really catagorize spagetti on its own as a cuisine, though at least its a simple answer. When I was a kid in britain in the 1970s Spagetti came in a tin in red sauce and that was that, no fuss. However, now its much more complicated and apparently the red sauce was actually something to do with tomatoes, and spagetti is a form of pasta, which is a food group defined by its shape and is made out of durum wheat and eggs. I used to like Italian, but I became demoralized when I realized that there are about 14,000 different types of pasta and that what you called the pasta depended on its shape, what its made out of, its colour, who made it, how big it is, what direction its pointing in etc. I was also exicted about mexican food, but again I became disillusioned when I realized that the major differences between many mexican meals involve how the bread type thing you wrap it in is folded. That said, Irish meals are classified in general by the number, shape, religion, and political allegiance of the potatos involved in them so we are in no position to critize anyone.

Now I'm beginning to remember why I generally don't get involved in food forums.

This is a tough one as I adore good food, (with the emphasis on "good") wherever it may originate from.

If I'm forced to pick one I guess it would have to be Thai, however, I agree with Diuretic that French is, without question in my opinion, far superior.

Italian is ok, ish, but most of their dishes taste of tomato and oregano, and are pasta based, not very imaginative. :D

I tried Sushi once. I cannot say that I was excited about it. I may as well have eaten raw fish...:-2

I'm afraid that I have never eaten in another country, but I do have favourites that have been 'imported' from several.

I like all things Italian

Some Turkish

Quite a few Mexican dishes

A few Greek dishes....dolmades...yum

Mexican food

Because I miss it so here!

Real shredded beef tacos with homemade salsa, napalitos (which is cactus), tamales-oh the Christmas ones of beef, pork and raisin-and we had one kind with candied cactus in it, carne asada, real mole with any kind of good meat, of course all of this with home made tortillas. I never can make them flat enough, even with a press.

:wah: Here is chicken mole, you have to have the accent there-it is the sauce, chocloate and chili combo. It is so good.

This is good for chicken.

1/2 c. flour

1/4 c. oil

1 sm. pkg. chili powder

2 cans chicken broth

1 envelope chili mix

1/4 tsp. garlic salt

1 block Mexican chocolate

6-8 chicken breast halves, boneless and skinless

French. I think over-all.. French cuisine is going to stand out as the best. I visited Villefranche back in 86' sitting in a restaurant on the bay.. and ate snails freshly plucked from the sea.. now if they can make snails taste good, well.. they can do anything!!

Mexican food comes in a close second.. not a complex cuisine at all.. but mighty tasty!! Many people don't realize that sea-food, particularly shell fish, is quite popular in Mexico. Believe it or not, the Mexicans don't dine exclusively on tacos and burritos.
