My first thought was Ms. Hannigan! (Annie)
Actually, there might be some substance here. The maximum number of children per orphanage could be an important aspect, though. I've heard a few horror stories about foster care. Don't know what the norm is.
Foster Care Vs. Orphanage
Foster Care Vs. Orphanage
Orphanages, if they are properly run and not as some means of extracting government dollars for churches or organizations that then use some of the children as their sexual toys, could look to make a come back.
Heard a ton of stories that are just as abusive as the orphanages used to be, from people that have been through this mill of agony. When they walk inthe door they are seen as dollar bills and if they do not do as their masters bid them they are thrown into the wolves to be devoured in one way or another from home to home. Each home with its own particular kind of deviance. Many good people are foster parents who truly do what they are professing to be doing. But all you need is a few to destroy lives that will never be able to find justice for the wrongs that they have endured by having been put on the treadmill of emotional and physical deprivation.
Canadians are still having to root out and bring to justice the evil beings that had habituated the residential schools of government largesse and Christian assimilation from years ago. The children suffering in this abuse have had a hard time with life because the people that they trusted betrayed their trust. Many still suffer the psychological damage from this abuse.
Regardless of which one is chosen it must be more than regulated to appeal to the children that are forced to live in these conditions. The people that work there must be trained to do the job because they are interested in the work and are not in it because they are pedophiles looking for an easy piece for their perversion or people trying to augment their incomes by bringing in some kids to care for that will work for free.
The damage that is caused in these circumstances is lifelong. Getting rid of the perverts that subvert the system to gain their way is the only way that any of these above organizations would or could work. It would be nice and workable if the people that ran the organiztions weren't so bereft of the mores that they claim to have. It is the children not the adults that should be made to have the best opportunities from the situation. For lives that would lead them into productive lives through which they would be able to repay for the good that was given them for their start in life..

Foster Care Vs. Orphanage
uniquedesign wrote: So what do you think? Should orphanages come back? I feel they could be better regulated with higher qualified staff (psychologists, counsolers, etc.) and provide kids with other children to relate to.
I myself am a financial supporter of Father Flannagan's Boys & Girls Town, for many years now. They take in homeless children that need shelter & nourishment.
As far as Kensloft's concerns, I have no real way of knowing what the conditions are in B & G Town. From the pictures/brochures they send, it's a nice place. However, how can one ever know what the conditions are at any of the child care facilities, without 100% constant monitoring. Which is physically & financially impracticale from a business perspective. :wah: I agree that childrens safety comes first, but how to assure that always happens is challenging!

Foster Care Vs. Orphanage
Florrie wrote: I have regular contact with both private and statutory LAC...........experiences :-1 !!!!! .
The depravation evidence is all too clear. LAC have the worst outcomes when it comes to social, physical and psychological wellbeing - translated into the highest rates of teen pregnancy, poor physical & mental health, employment opportunities, and once they reach 18 years isolation & homelessness. They often have no idea of their rights. The majority don't know they can choose an independent advocate - someone/ anyone who can act on their behalf and visit at will with total confidentality.
In both private and statutory care the quality of staff is abismal. Some worse than others, and foster care is no exception.
Qualifications: 'Attend a one or two day course' - ' put it on a CV ' and hey presto!!! ....................your qualified to deal with the hearts, heads and souls of the most vulnerable of vulnerable kids.
In the UK the cost for one child in the private sector is appox £3,000 month.
The paper diarrhoea PR (glossy brochures) is SUPPOSED to provide quality care, which promises the usual daily needs, expert 'clinical Psychology, access to psychiatric support as well as 1st class Education, on site or elswhere. :sneaky:
Try cold calling any day between 10-12 am > no access> all still in bed.
Woe betide a outside agency-professional getting involved. The kids are moved on, out of area faster than one can write a referral for help.
The Doller Kids Business is what takes priority
.
If 100% monitoring is what it takes to ensure LAC care and wellbeing then that is what it takes. It's too easy to give financial backing/assistance then blow trumpet with head in sand.
NO challenge in having staff/carers experience and qualifications checked by a professional yearly?.......By one who knows the difference between bogus and genunine quality!!!!.
NO challenge in demanding staff update their knowledge & skills periodically as other professionals have to do.
NO challenge to ensure that all staff are police checked yearly.
No challenge in having spot checks written into policy and procedures.
No challenge in ensuring each new young person has all the information they are entitled to.
No challenge to ensure LAC have equal access to the health and social care/activities/opportunities as their peers in family settings
It's just good business sense for a fair return.
!00%. Top grades. Great post. Wonderful insight. Couldn't have said it better. Thanks for the words.

My childless aunt and her husband used to be contributers to Boy's Town.
Saw the Mickey Rooney movie and all including Mickey now playing the role of Father Flannigan. Wonderful work. But there are those that make it into the system that abuse and destroy lives.
If it takes what Florrie says then that is what it takes. The church is no longer able to hide their abusers anymore. The only people that know for sure are the kids that are there or have been moved on into life. They are the ones that can give us the answers we seek. If there is nothing amiss at Boy's Town then score one for the good guys and move on to focus on and ferret out the abusers. They are there. So are we.
Let's give these kids what they need because they, one day, will be giving us what we need. Good citizens that are building a society that takes in and helps everybody regardless of race, color or creed.

kensloft,
I worked on that latter movie (originally called "He Ain't Heavy") don't know if they got the rights to keep the title. Mickey was a crass self-centered bozo...but Boys Town seemed like a great thing. They should have one for girls too. (I've got their first resident on hand.)

Well, watching him in the role didn't do anything to step his prestige up a little inmy estimation. Could sort of see him imaging himself as the latter day Spencer Tracy. No contest. Ego trip. The story was about Boy's Town and the hopes and inspiration that it compelled in those that were in need of its help.
Don't really hear great things about him doing wonderful things for people in need. Could be wrong but...?
There has to be something for girls. This is the 21st century. Maybe Jives knows something about this?
