How to Detect Lies

Oh, alot of this is true.

This is how I can tell if a student is fibbing to me:

"Are you chewing gum?"

*chomp, chomp*

"Is that a note in your hand?"

*hand behind back trying to stuff note in pocket*

"Did you copy your homework from someone else?"

*they look up at ceiling-waiting for something to fall down and clunk them in the head*

"Were you eating candy in class?"

"No teacher......" said with a big purple tongue!

Introduction to Detecting Lies:

The following techniques to telling if someone is lying are often used by police, and security experts. This knowledge is also useful for managers, employers, and for anyone to use in everyday situations where telling the truth from a lie can help prevent you from being a victim of fraud/scams and other deceptions.

Warning: Sometimes Ignorance is bliss; after gaining this knowledge, you may be hurt when it is obvious that someone is lying to you.

• A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.

I have found the opposite to be true many times. A practiced or good liar will arrogantly try to look you in the eye, to appear honest. As they know that lots of people read things like this.:sneaky:

Not to invalidate what is here.

Being lied to by someone you love or care about is the worst.

How to Detect Lies

Post by minks »

Reminds me of lie detecting techniques I used to use on my kids when they were younger.

Ask the same question over and over again, in a different way,

Did you eat the last cookie?

Did you see your sister eat the last cookie?

Did dad say you could eat the last cookie?

If you ate the last cookie did you enjoy it?

You know when you eat the last of something you should throw the package away....

Eventually they would get hung up and I would catch the lie.

I have also taken tests for working as a youth mentor and they do the exact same thing ask the same question over in a different format.

Diuretic wrote: Sociopaths can do that easily. Most people, that is ordinary people who have a conscience, find it difficult to lie convincingly and the points that onsekiz has made are pretty accurate. People don't like lying and so most people do it badly. But socipaths do it so well you just can't pick their lies.
OMG! The man I was/am seeing is a sociopath!

I need to get away from him, I have know this for a while now.

I was using the term "sociopath" from a criminological perspective but that little reference is going to be more accurate I feel.
Ah this sounds exactly like him. He had even been incarcerated. I swear, ths guy has to be one.

I've been thinking of a way to get away from him, I just need to go.

Is this the man you were telling us about from the church shelter? Is he still seeing that other woman?

Do you think it is becoming dangerous for you to continue seeing him?

We want you to be safe! :-6

YEs that is him.

I don't think he is dangerous in the physical way. He has actually protected me from men there who were dangerous to me.

But some of the things I just read about the personality traits sound like him. He does not seem to have consideration for other people's feelings, not just mine either.

We sort of had words last night when I arrived back there at 9 p.m. after he'd called me to remind me it is time to come home and to ask why I'd left all day. So I had been so upset about a conversation we had yesterday morning, that I spent all day away from there doing busy stuff by myself. But then in the evening I felt so depressed about my situation and that he and I are not getting along now (due to other people in my personal business). SO by the time I arrived back there to go to bed, he was all friendly with me and I was angry at him and I kind of threw it back in his face. He had actually been looking for me but I had gone away upset. Sometimes he is so cold.

This morning we didn't talk. He walked by me a couple times making eye contact. I said nothing.

I assume he is still seing that other woman. But she has not been around for about 1 1/2 weeks now. She goes off like this, does not come and see him much. And then shows up randomely, and he leaves for an hour or so for dinner or such.

How to Detect Lies

Post by Jason McCarty »

Given the prevalence of both deception and communication technology in our personal and professional lives, an important set of questions have recently emerged about how technology affects digital deception, which refers to any intentional control of information in a technologically mediated message to create a false belief in the receiver of the message. The first question is concerned with how communication technologies affect the production of deception. Do people use different media to lie about different types of things, or to different types of people? The second question concerns our ability to detect deception across various media. Are we worse at detecting a lie in a text-based interaction than we are in face-to-face?
