Well its that time again when its so hot all the dogs get shaved, not just trimmed but shaved, sometimes there heads and/or the end of the tails are left. There are some that you wouldn't normally see shaved so they just look ridiculous, today I saw a skinny looking dog but I wasn't sure what breed it was so I asked the owner, it was a collie poor thing looked more like a whippet or greyhound.
The new trend this year is when the fur is starting to grow a pattern is shaved into it.
Does anywhere else do this to their dogs?

No, and I wouldn't. Too much danger of burn. The coat is meant to be
insulation.
I think a longer blade and taking the hair down to a more tolerable
level would be okay.
But not completely shaved, my regal gsd would look very undignified!

Yup, Val's right. Please don't do this to your dogs, folks!! You may think that puppers will be more comfy without all that fur, but it protects them from the sun, especially this time of year when it's SO brutal. Lots of cold water available ALL the time, and not too much activity in the sun. If it's exhausting for you, it is for your pet, too. For short-haired dogs, sunblock on the tip of the nose and ears is a good idea, too, Especially pink noses!
[FONT=Arial Black]I hope you cherish this sweet way of life, and I hope you know that it comes with a price.

I refuse to shave my beagles as they already have short hair so I give them a cold shower everyday to keep them cool. It's been 40c and rising up to 50c or more for August so they won't be going out much during the day.

well its not about shaving but one of my cats is white and we have to take care of her ears in hte sun.
I used to use a stick block in blue to match her eyes but she got toooo much attention and l think people thought she was some rare breed and not just a common garden variety mix..

lol I used to have two white cats, I had to paint their ears with sunblock too, looks quite
We also used to have a springer who we used to get clipped (not shaved though) in the summer as he got older, he loved it and would lay down at the feet of the girl who used to clip him as if to say 'come on then get on with it' he would then frolic around the garden like a puppy after his trim, aah memories, he was a lovely dog. :-4

I think shaving a dog in that way is appaling.
Our dog is a German Shepherd / Collie cross and has long hair. His kennel is shaded and we keep him cool by hosing him down with cold water. Just simple basic common sense.
Seems to me that people who shave their dogs in that manner are just trying to be trendy at the expense of their pet.
It isn't clever and it isn't funny.

We used to won a giant Newfoundlander Retreiver Cross, he was +100lbs and all black and furry as could be.
We asked the vet one day about cutting his hair, or shaving him and just like Val and BR said, we got a firm NO! His natural instinct and body function is to provide his self with insulation, they grow a fine fine under fur that keeps their body temperature regulated in hot and cold weather. To remove that would make the dog prone to sunburn and heat stroke.
As for shaving shapes into the dogs fur, how idiotic is that. Folks should save that for their own heads.
I mean really what must this poor fella's friends think of him
